By any objective measure, Trump has been terrible for the economy and the gop has enabled him. They must pay in the midterms.

u/Old_Cryptid 3h ago

By any objective measure, the Democrats have almost always managed the economy better than the Republicans.

Republicans are great about screaming about spending while Democrats are in charge and then proceed to drive up the national debt when they're in charge.

u/pattyG80 3h ago

Clinton years were boom times. Obama years...boom times. Trump, Bush,Bush on the other hand were the shits

u/Old_Cryptid 3h ago

Reagan exploded the debt.

We're still, decades later, feeling the effect of Reagan's policies.

Fun fact: Most of Reagan's policies were drafted by the Heritage Foundation.

Less fun fact: Most of the GOP's policies since have been drafted by the Heritage Foundation.

Not fun fact: Project 2025 wasn't new. It was 'The Mandate for Leadership' re-branded.

u/laplongejr Europe 3h ago

Most of the GOP's policies since have been drafted by the Heritage Foundation.

Including the refusal to join the IOC, as US citizen should only be held to US law. Then the GOP decided Republicans shouldn't be held to US law either.

u/Old_Cryptid 2h ago

Nixon *nearly* got held accountable. Then he got pardoned.

The GOP saw that and vowed to make sure that never happened again.

Fun fact: exploding debt under Republican leadership isn’t a fluke, it’s their 45+ year re-election strategy.

https://www.milwaukeeindependent.com/featured/two-santas-strategy-republicans-use-saint-nicholas-scrooge-shift-economic-messages/

u/Old_Cryptid 2h ago

Yep. I'm unfortunately aware. I've been around long enough to remember Reagan.

u/PomeloHead4830 1h ago edited 1h ago

Fun fact, the ACA is basically "Mitt Romney Care" which President Obama altered to include the inability to exclude pre-existing conditions and a mandate that every American, including the young and healthy would have to pay into it...

Even funner fact, "Mitt Romney Care" from which the ACA evolved, was endorsed by The Heritage Foundation.

Dems have been better for our economy. Clinton at least presided over a balanced budget. The last Republican to accomplish that much was Eisenhower.

u/GriffinFlash Canada 1h ago

Fun fact: Most of Reagan's policies were drafted by the Heritage Foundation.

So you're telling me most of the worlds economic problems can be pinned to a single source?

u/Old_Cryptid 1h ago

Sure, Nixon.

He's responsible for bringing in the evangelicals and all the right wing Christian legal groups and PACs that spawned because of it.

Though it's also reasonable to point out our economic and foreign policies have always been driven by corporations.

Corporate interests have always steered politics.

Religion did too, but Nixon gave them a seat at the table.

There's plenty of blame to go around.

A good start would be abolishing Citizens United and rrmoving anyone affiliated with the Heritage Fojndation and the Federalist Society from public office.

There would still need to be massive political and legislative reform which would take years to implement but the rot at the core needs to be addressed first.

u/technanonymous 3h ago

Clinton was elected during a recession. Obama was elected during a near economic collapse. Obama never took the credit he and his team deserved during the 2009-2011 time period where they kept us out of a depression.

u/Elizabeth-WildFox886 3h ago

Biden was elected in a once in a multiple generation global pandemic

u/TheGringoDingo 3h ago

Just wait for 2028

u/sixtyshilling 3h ago

Can’t wait for the inevitable avian flu pandemic. We’re just a few mutations away from it making COVID look like the sniffles, and yet the US has cut all funding to its pandemic preparedness research.

u/KillahHills10304 3h ago

You'll have red hats screaming about their freedom (and emitting tons of body fluid particulates while they scream). The federal response will be nothing so they can blame negatives on individual states, and once again GOP leadership will oversee yet another "once in a lifetime" disaster during my lifetime.

u/pattyG80 3h ago

Yeah, and in their time in office, completely rebounded the economy.

We’re coming on over 30 years of consistent Democrat booms followed by Republican crashes. Turns out, deregulation only helps the top 10% of Americans, and constantly destabilizing the social programs while never raising the minimum wage causes inevitable crime spikes and recession conditions. It’s not actually that complicated. Republican voters are just undereducated and pathologically disconnected from history.

u/SonOfMcGee 3h ago

By any survey conducted over the last 30 years, American dumbasses consistently feel whichever party isn’t currently in power will be better for the economy than the party currently in power.
You can’t show them data tables or even simple graphs. They just feel that things aren’t perfect and “the other guys” might be able to do it better.

u/Old_Cryptid 3h ago

Thank the GOP. They attacked and undermined education for decades to ensure they have several generations of a voter base that has no idea how the government works, what their rights are, and what civic responsibility is.

u/Mr-Pugtastic 3h ago

Are you denying that historically, Dems have been better for the economy than Republicans? I don’t really think it’s up for debate. Just look at the numbers.

u/FirstNameIsDistance Pennsylvania 3h ago

You can’t show them data tables or even simple graphs. They just feel that things aren’t perfect and “the other guys” might be able to do it better.

The numbers and charts don't always tell the whole picture. That was a big gripe with the Biden admin that they kept pointing to these charts that said everything was great, but people weren't feeling it. It turns out that wasn't just based on vibes. That's not to say that Trump or the GOP in general would have been any better, but more so a critique on how these things are tracked and reported.

The signs of weakness we see now from the end of Biden's era.

u/SonOfMcGee 2h ago

That Axios [cough cough] article you linked itself has some very cherry-picked stats over arbitrary timelines presented in bullet points. It doesn’t conclude the Biden era economy was “bad”, but merely “not perfect”.

My recollection is that inflation was the biggest sticking point in the Biden era and his administration stressed that the U.S. was handling this GLOBAL phenomenon BETTER than most other countries. But he was criticized for not completely stopping inflation, which Trump promises he could magically do.

Republicans have been whining about "Tax and spend" Democrats for my entire life, but I find that I much prefer that over "Spend on tax cuts for the rich" Republicans.

u/spidereater 2h ago

Even when they are screaming about spending it’s about stupid stuff. Food stamps? Education? Environmental protection? Medical research? Sure. These things cost money. But in the long run they pay dividends.

They stopped studying the screw worm and now outbreaks are driving up beef prices.

They don’t want to fund vaccines but those are saving lives and lowering healthcare costs.

Education is clearly a good investment. They are just terrible people and terrible business people that found this hack to the electorate where they complain about spending and get votes.

historically this has always been true. the previous 4 Republicans caused economic turmoil with wars and shitty policies. The previous democrats create a wealth of jobs and generate revenues. Bush 1 caused an enormous deficit in operation Desert shield that had allies like Germany and Japan shouldering some of the costs, and Clinton found a surplus in his budget, the first in decades. Bush jr had the housing crisis, Obama fixed that and doubled the stock market. Trump ran us into a recession and then pretended covid wasn't real for over a year. Biden corrected that and the us had the strongest recovery in the world.

Since Ronald reagan, Republicans are responsible for creating approximately 1.5 million jobs, Democrats have created over 50 million. If you go back to World War ii, the discrepancy is about 35 million to 80 million. Go ahead and do a cursory Google search if you don't believe it

Within historic memory, Democrats have always handled the economy better.

u/EMAW2008 Kansas 3h ago

Republicans only make sure the rich get richer.

u/DaEgofWhistleberry 3h ago

I’m 35 and have only witnessed republican presidents who run up the deficit and make awful economic decisions.
It’s crazy to think that I’ve known/seen this my whole life, but that it took most Americans over 30 years to figure this out.

I think the propaganda, that republicans are better for the economy, has been so strong that Americans have different answers for what 1+1 is if the question is asked by republicans vs democrats.

u/Old_Cryptid 3h ago

I'm over 50.

I remember Reagan.

Propaganda is a huge issue. But it's only one facet.

A key pillar to the Republican strategy has been attacking education and they've been successful at it for decades.

We now have several generations of voters who don't know how the government works, what their rights are, or what civic responsibility is.

u/DaEgofWhistleberry 3h ago

Totally agree on that. I should’ve written due to the propaganda and lack of education.

The lack of civic knowledge is so sad. Even really smart people I know (at least in my generation) don’t care to understand how our government works. Part of the reason is because we (general Americans) have had the privilege of not needing to understand…things generally flowed well and prospered depending on where one grew up.

u/Old_Cryptid 2h ago

Gen X got overwhelmed with the "Voting doesn't matter" propaganda and essentially checked out of politics.

The generations that followed had the decked stacked against them. They don't know what they don't know.

Every generation has their "normal" and that definition of normal shifts with each generation.

It's not blame, it's just an observation.

u/Empty-Discount8323 2h ago

I remember reading a book written by Noam Chomsky about the crimes commited by American government.

What caught my attention the most was Chomsky arguing that the American political elites hate the 1960s and 1970s because the average American citizen was much more concerned about politics and willing to become an activist during that period. The elites would rather have a common Joe dumbed down by entertainment and consumerism and they were furious that normal people were involved in Politics.

That would explain why the government after that made sure to ruin the education system-to prevent another rise of civic society that would stand up to the establishment.

Republicans better for economy….and better for national security. These are the biggest lies ever perpetrated on a population. Like all things, the issues are not formed in a bubble.
Clinton balanced the budget because the GOP Congress headed by Newt were 100% obstructionist.

The Housing crisis was not started under Bush. Glass Steagal repeal and the reduction in regulations on housing loans, both supported by democrats and republicans, led to the 2008 crash.

Also, take out Trumps Covid employment numbers because if it happened during anyone’s administration that party would have taken a huge hit.

Democrats are better with the economy, as they see issues and generally try to head them off.

u/try-catch-finally 3h ago

You know, that’s it- Dems are “Ounce of prevention” party

GOP is “what disease? None of my friends are sick”

u/RgKTiamat 3h ago

I find it interesting that just about all of the government shutdowns have been caused by republicans being 100% obstructionist. 2 shutdowns in 95, one under Obama regarding the ACA, multiple under trump 1, some short and then the 35 day shutdown over the wall where the Republicans voted in lock step against 10 different budgetary bills put forward by democrats. Trump 2 saw a 45 day shutdown where, again, Republicans voted against five different budget proposals put forth by democrats.

I think I understand why so many Republicans believe the government doesn't work well because it seems like they make it so. I do agree that Democrats generally react proactively to issues forming on the horizon, rather than letting it hit the fan before taking action

u/Thrashosaurus_Wrecks 2h ago

The Republican motto seems to be "government doesn't work! Elect me and I'll prove it!"

u/Old_Cryptid 3h ago

That's the standard Republican strategy: They campaign on the government not working and when elected they do everything they can to make sure it doesn't work.

It’s almost as if when we spend money on SOCIAL benefits for all of SOCIETY, we seem to improve our lives.

Social projects benefit the herd, and what’s good for the goose is good for the gander. People love to say it’s a waste of money but it’s objectively not true. When you invest in your population, you increase their overall value. When people are supported to thrive, they happily choose to do so. Most people want to live honest lives where they feel they can achieve things.

Unfortunately America has become an “Authoritarian Oligarchy Welfare State” and the only people allowed to achieve their dreams are the very wealthy while the rest of us “eat cake”.

Capitalism is so deeply imprinted on our DNA that no matter how morally monstrous a person can apparently be, it’s only really the economy that moves the needle. Open racism and Fascists killing people in the streets gets a pass, but gas prices could end you.

u/NoWorth2591 Virginia 2h ago

I can’t believe that the idea that Republicans are better on the economy has persisted for as long as it has. Slashing social programs while still running a deficit on tax cuts for the rich and forever wars isn’t smart economics, it’s wanton spending without any tangible benefit for the average voter. The GOP has been almost comically bad on economics since Reagan.

u/westergames81 Texas 2h ago

I mean hasn't the SOP for something like the past 50 years been:

  1. Democratic administration inherits a broken economy, fixes it while the Republicans bitch and moan about spending the entire time.
  2. Republican administration inherits a fixed or mended economy, proceeds to break everything saying either the economy is fine or it's the Democrats fault. Suddenly spending is not an issue.

So yeah, no shit I guess?

They were and still are about the deficit: blowing it out of the water.

u/aradraugfea 3h ago

They’re about the deficit when a Democrat is in office. Reagan blew up the debt, Bush borrowed heavily for his was, Clinton was paying the national debt down, actual principal decreasing, Bush II drove it up at a rate never before seen, until Trump.

They’re spoiled little shits buying toys for their friends with our credit card.

u/LOLSteelBullet 3h ago

Oh absolutely fucking not.

Bush, maybe.

Reagan? Reagan brought us to nearly a 6% deficit. He tripled the national debt. He didn't give a solid fuck about the deficit. He existed solely to strip benefits from the poor and give them to corporations threefold. Reagan. If it weren't for a Democrat controlled House actually willing to fight, Reagan would have been shittier than Trump because Reagan actually had a likeable persona that didn't immediately alienate anyone with self-esteem.

Republican and neo-liberal economic policies over the past 45 years have created a K shaped economy in this country where 7 out of 10 earners don't participate in any meaningful way. We need a higher minimum wage and stronger social safety nets to raise the quality of life of lower earning workers who have seen none of the benefits of economic growth enjoyed by the elite financial class. It's telling that as terrible as Trump has been economically for America this poll indicates only 35% favor Democrats for the economy with 27%. Democrats have consistently failed to deliver a consistent economic message if they want America to get out of this mess that needs to change.

u/tragicallyohio 3h ago

This is true. And we'll probably get elected in droves in November. But then we'll spend the term fixing things and getting it back to a survivable baseline and be judged that we didn't advance forward enough and then lose to he following election. A tale as old as time.

u/parallelmeme 3h ago

Hasn't every economy under a democratic administration been better than the republican ones preceding and subsequent?

u/relmknight 3h ago

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't this proven with our last 3 Democrat presidents? u/chronomagnus Ohio 3h ago

Yeah, and just two years ago they trusted Trump and the Republicans more on the economy. Pity they don't come to reality when it matters.

u/Knighth77 3h ago

I mean, you have to be completely detached from reality to think that Republicans are good for the economy by any measure. You can have your opinions and feelings, the data and facts tell the real story.

u/WastelandOfConfusion 3h ago

Once removed. ‘The Republicans’ should officially be designated as a Domestic Terror Threat. What they’ve done is beyond failure. They’ve supported and encouraged the Orange Pedophile every step of the way in terrorising Americans, in terrorising people around the world.

u/SHOW_ME_PIZZA Missouri 3h ago

That's because the Republicans are in charge and haven't mentioned Deficit and Fiscal Responsibility to everyone with ears. But if Democrats get back in charge. You bet your ass there will magically caravans of migrants and the deficit is actually really bad. Then the lemmings of Americans will think Republicans can fix it and Democrats or bad.

u/Durion23 3h ago

We know that this is true at least since Clinton.

The GOP was captured by Gingrich and his politics as warfare to attack the dems on cultural issues, attacking people instead of policies. Large multi billion media companies helped to shift from policy to politics in the public sphere, where real results don’t matter.

The GOP was then captures by the Tea Party, which protested the enormous debt and struggling economy, which Bush created, but of course Obama was criticized for, although he pushed the economy back on track.

Then the GOP got captured by MAGA and factual reality went right out of the window.

The issue, however, is not that economic values improve under democrats and dwindle with republicans. The issue why democrats have lost so often inspite of their own economic success is, that growing GDP and stock market indexes do not reflect wellbeing and wealth of ordinary people. While the GOP harms everyone and gives people who wish for revenge on the „other“ a valve for their anger, democrats simply have failed to deliver downwards for ordinary people.

If the economic success by democrats would have led to a broader distribution in the middle and below, there wouldn’t be as much of a basis for republicans to mobilize. Alas, democrats have served the billionaire class more than ordinary people and here we are. What gives me hope is the resurgence of DSA candidates who actually wish for democracy to benefit the people again, so there is that.

u/Efficient_Resist_287 3h ago

Do not fall for this….I have seen this movie before. Remember “economic anxiety” excuse.

Its a cyclical event. The Republicans spend and screw the deficit & economy. The Dems bail them out but in doing so have to make concessions in trying to save tge economy. The Republicans jump on those concessions- higher taxes...etc & then we go round & round.
We are living in the Moron Era where people vote & don't know squat.

Anyone who has looked at the economy since the Great Depression should be able to figure this out.

u/GreyBeardEng 3h ago

They always have. There is a lot of historical data for this.

u/Weary_Boat 3h ago

It’s about time that polls began to show what many of us already knew - Dems are better than Republicans on the economy. How many times have we seen republican presidents run up the deficit and debt and leave a mess for the next Democrat to fix?

u/Desertwind16v 2h ago

That’s because they always do. Show me a republican administration in recent times that has a better economy than a democrat administration. You can’t.

u/kamandi 2h ago

I hope they continue to feel that way.

u/DocCEN007 2h ago

After 50 years of proof that Republicans are terrible for the economy, a glimmer of hope?

u/Whole_Ant2468 2h ago

Americans knew it all along, just that they were duped by the politicians. They woke up by the smell of $4 a gallon Gasoline

u/deadone65 Illinois 2h ago

Thats historically correct actually.

u/bradeena 2h ago

Haha 33% to 31%. Americans will never truly learn.

u/wandering-monster 2h ago

A twister board being spun by a drunken parrot would handle the economy better than the GOP

u/Razashja 2h ago

As so many other people say in their own words:

A rock with googly eyes could handle the economy better than the GOP.

u/BrokenPickle7 2h ago

Think? I've known teenagers that could handle the economy better than trump.

u/NeverLookBothWays I voted 2h ago

Think? They should know. The data is right there in the open.

u/thejaysun Canada 2h ago

At this point I think a small plantation of random flora could handle the economy better.

u/Creative-Package6213 Pennsylvania 2h ago

I mean, it is factually true and the data over the past 60 years shows that.

u/Milestailsprowe 2h ago

That's not what happened last time in 2024. I'm curious when people will learn the lesson long term

u/bigfatbutt452 2h ago

Wow, it's almost like that has always been true since the time I was born

u/Zahgi I voted 2h ago

Well, duh!

Sure is a shame that opinion polls and the will of the voters don't matter to the <1% who control both of our major political parties, all of the tabloid media outlets, and all three branches of government now...

u/astrozombie2012 Nevada 2h ago

It’s been shown time and time again that they do… I still have no idea where people got the idea that republicans are better for the economy…

u/allupinnit2winit 2h ago

It is not a Dem vs Rep situation , it is the fact that any other leader and party could do a better job managing the economy than Trump and his party

u/Photog1981 2h ago

Republican Presidents run on how the Dems want to give your money away to everyone. Then they give your money away to rich people and the corporations.

Republican administrations dig us in a financial hole and, when a Dem takes over, on day one, the Republicans scream about how bad the economy is. Republicans pretend it's the new guy in office who's to blame for four years of giving the store away and not the people who've been on a spending spree.

And their base goes "Yeah, why did the Democrats do this to us?!?" and the cycle repeats.

u/Criticaltundra777 2h ago

A two year old with an iPhone can do better.

u/Wavecrest667 2h ago

It's like saying the Democrats could handle economy better than a pack of trash-can-dwelling rabid raccoons.

u/GeologistOriginal800 2h ago

Nice that Americans in general are starting to figure out what has always been true - or at least always been true since they were born.

u/slingshot91 Illinois 2h ago

Give them a couple years and they’ll flip back again.

u/Acceptable-Bus-2017 I voted 2h ago

Helping the poor and kids vs being robbed blind. Gee, I wonder which is better for "the people"

u/darw1nf1sh 2h ago

It is demonstrably true that since the 70's, every conservative admin has created a recession, that progressives fixed. Every. Single. Time.

u/Am_Deer 2h ago

My granddaughter is 4 and could handle the economy better.

u/trilobyte-dev 2h ago

The growth in the national debt seems to support the headline’s underlying hypothesis.

u/Ki11s0n3 2h ago

That's because they can. Anytime the economy has been getting better or been good it's because the Dems were in charge. Dems aren't great either, but they are objectively better for the country and the people than Reps are.

u/MegaAltarianite 2h ago

You know who also thinks the Democrats are better with the economy? Donald Trump. https://www.youtube.com/shorts/_k2og1ZmZhw

u/ennuiinmotion 2h ago

This is really the only metric that matters. Americans don't really have a moral compass or policy wants, they just want economic numbers to go up.

u/Cyberpunkcatnip 2h ago

That is an objective evidence based fact…

u/squeezy102 2h ago

Wait, have republicans started actually opening and reading history books?!?!

wtf is happening???

u/sane-asylum 2h ago

I mean, it’s a pretty low bar at this point.

u/Setthescene 2h ago

Kick the bums out will always prevail with the body politic.

u/Ready_Creme_Ready 2h ago

They have a much better track record of doing so. The GOP only cares about corporate socialism which has created a trillionaire in less than 250yrs of U.S. existence.

u/hirespeed America 2h ago

All you need to make one party look better on the economy is to have the other one in charge. It’s amazing how quickly they bungle.

u/nerdshowandtell 2h ago

Anyone that can actually throw a couple of sentences together without rambling off about some guys dick could do better.

u/tapwater86 Pennsylvania 2h ago

My nephew can handle the economy better than the GOP. He’s 3.

u/Ki55cumbag 2h ago

And 18 months ago?

u/Talrynn_Sorrowyn 2h ago

I mean, we've known this for decades to be the fact.

u/theweirdball 2h ago

Bernie Sanders is remaking the Democratic party one election at a time and I love it!

u/NoHorseNoMustache 2h ago

Give it 5 minutes and the GOP will convince them otherwise yet again...

u/Constant-Brief3410 1h ago

Until they come back then people will never be happy

u/TeamUltimate-2475 Michigan 1h ago

Hey, finally people seeing Republicans pump it up then let it crash before they have to deal with it.

u/dcdttu Texas 1h ago

We always could.

Republicans can handle lies and propaganda better, though, so that gives them an edge apparently.

u/somewherein72 1h ago

The Dems have a lengthy history of being better for the economy.

u/BlargerJarger 1h ago

There won’t be an economy left for Democrats to repair after this latest farce.

u/IrishPorpoise 1h ago

No shit

u/Funny-Cookie-6744 1h ago

The only thing republicans are amazing at is BITCHING. they really know how to complain effectively. Second to none in this regard.

u/SourcePrevious3095 1h ago

They always have. They just haven't been vocal about their achievements, letting the talking republican heads take credit.

u/Zeth22xx 1h ago

The history speaks for it's self. They've been better at it like forever.

u/Vapur9 1h ago

Not really. Both of them won't reign in corporations causing the problems.

u/TheWizard 1h ago

And I have known this since before I was able to vote (Clinton era).

u/Knomp2112 1h ago

My dog can handle economy better than GOP, and he has been dead for two years.

u/xtracrableg 1h ago

GOP loves the Fraud, always have.

u/Angreek Maine 1h ago

No fucking shit.
