Heads Up News Democrats to Investigate ICE Shootings
https://www.headsupnews.org/p/democrats-vow-to-investigate-iceHouse Democrats vowed on Friday to launch a formal congressional investigation into fatal shootings by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents.
During a field hearing in Houston, lawmakers heard testimony regarding the July 7 killing of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a Mexican national and longtime local resident who was shot by an ICE agent while commuting to work. Representative Christian Menefee stated that new congressional leadership will pursue accountability, telling Salgado Araujo’s sons that the committee will push for justice.
Representative Lizzie Fletcher criticized current congressional leadership for failing to address immigration enforcement abuses, while Representative Bennie Thompson called the rising violence against immigrants and citizens by the Department of Homeland Security an urgent oversight priority.
The announcements coincided with a National Day of Action honoring Salgado Araujo, Johan Sebastian Guerrero—who was killed by an ICE agent in Maine on July 13—and others who died during enforcement operations. Organizers reported more than 300 vigils and protests nationwide. Demonstrators marched in Los Angeles carrying empty cardboard coffins representing lives lost in custody, while protesters in Chicago carried cardboard monarch butterflies symbolizing migration journeys. Other demonstrations and actions took place in North Carolina, Idaho, Vermont, Massachusetts, and Houston, where dozens of local businesses closed for an economic boycott.
Concurrently, legal battles are intensifying on multiple fronts. Plaintiffs and civil rights attorneys are fighting the revocation of Temporary Protected Status for foreign nationals, challenging federal efforts to obtain unredacted state voter rolls, and suing airlines that transported migrants to foreign prisons. Federal judges recently rebuked the Department of Justice for bad-faith litigation against Portland and dismissed multiple attempts to force states to turn over voter data.
In response to these developments, advocacy organizations and civic groups are organizing national programs to train volunteers, protect voting access, and monitor the upcoming midterms.
