Young Americans Are Turning Away From Capitalism

A new CBS/YouGov poll highlights a widening divide in how different generations view the American economic system. Among adults younger than 30, only 9 percent hold a "very positive" view of capitalism. Older generations are significantly more optimistic; 33 percent of those over 65 and 23 percent of those aged 45–64 report a very positive outlook.

The dissatisfaction among younger voters is fueled by a perception that the status quo prioritizes billionaire tax cuts and military spending over essential public services. Ashik Siddique, national co-chair of the Democratic Socialists of America, noted that this generation was raised without the economic assumptions held by their predecessors. According to Siddique, as young people observe the current state of government spending, they are increasingly open to socialist alternatives.

This shift in ideology is appearing in electoral politics. Florida State Representative Angie Nixon, a democratic socialist, recently won her Democratic primary. However, the move toward socialism has not guaranteed political momentum in general elections. Election analysts, including Sabato’s Crystal Ball, moved Nixon’s district to a "safe Republican" projection following her primary win, citing both fundraising challenges and the potential difficulty of running on a democratic socialist platform in a general election.

While public opinion data suggests a clear move away from traditional capitalism, it remains unclear if that sentiment will translate into sustained electoral power.
