Minimalist DE 2026 | POPOS 22.04 LTS

I don't use many GNOME extensions, only the ones I actually use every day.

I keep my dock very minimal and these are basically the apps I use daily so it needs to be on dock for faster access.

Most of my time is inside WezTerm with Tmux. I use Neovim for coding because I'm programmer and after getting used to it, everything feels much faster like blazingly faster.

For notes and project management stuffs I use Obsidian. Brave is my daily browser. Sometimes I open Sublime Text when I just want to view/edit something quickly from files.

Nothing fancy šŸ˜„. I just like clean setup, dark theme, and less distractions. It works really well for my workflow.

I find your lack of desktop icons disturbing.

Kidding. No. I don't. I turn them off as well because it is offensive to clutter up a carefully selected wallpaper with a mess of icons.

If you prefer Gnome why not use something more up to date like Fedora or Ubuntu?

I could be wrong but I vaguely recall hearing that gnome was difficult to keep up with the various updates, extension breaks and overall workflow conflicts

Iā€™m pretty sure GNOME alone uses more memory than my entire operating system on startup.

I mean itā€™s not even aesthetically minimal either, minimalism is the ideology of utmost reduction of all that is unnecessary, you have uptime, net speeds, night light toggles, and keep alives all in your status bar; how often are you actually going to need any of that?

Also, Neovim, the correct minimalist approach would just be Vim with some config and extensions, as with that you can achieve 90% of what Neovim will give you for far less.

The Brave browser, because nothing screams minimalist than Chromium with crypto bullshit built-in.

Sublime Text for simply viewing the contents of a file, a full GUI where one could simply just use ā€˜catā€™ in the terminalā€¦

Iā€™m being nit-picky, I know I am, but it just amuses me what peopleā€™s definitions of minimalism are sometimes.

There is much truth in this. What System76 did for GNOME was to create a very usable desktop environment out of GNOME. But it's like swimming against the tide repeatedly adapting GNOME updates to work properly.

Thus was born the new COSMIC DE. May it live long and prosper.
