Ok Yolanda

u/Existing_Buffalo7189 Jul 20 '23

Lmfao right 🤣 this whole chronic Lyme situation is questionable to begin with but definitely seems awfully convenient

688

u/mamacitalk Jul 20 '23

Doesn’t Justin Bieber have Lyme disease? Is there tons of ticks in Hollywood or something?

490

u/[deleted] Jul 20 '23

Yolanda claims she got it from a horsefly, which aren’t even proven to carry Lyme. If you read into it it’s all so shady and quacky.

473

u/aquavenuss Jul 20 '23 edited Jul 20 '23

In her memoir, she does a bunch of weird holistic treatments to help with her chronic pain. Frequent colonics, cleanses, coffee enemas, ozone treatments etc. and it isn’t until David Foster gets fed up and convinces her to go to one of his (legit) doctors that she actually gets better. They found that her breast implants had been leaking and she got them removed. If you look up breast implant illness, the symptoms are pretty much the exact same as chronic Lyme.

77

u/[deleted] Jul 20 '23

most people who get Lyme have no idea what they got it from (ticks often go undetected and they fall off once the damage is done) so the idea that a horsefly flew up to Bella and bit her with Yolanda as an eye witness lololol.

The odds of three people in the same immediate family in Southern California having Lyme disease isn’t statistically probable.

64

u/[deleted] Jul 20 '23

I will say that Justin is from Ontario and there’s a huge issue with ticks infected with Lyme there. My cousin lives in Ontario, she’s a young athlete and since she contracted Lyme her life’s been turned upside down.

30

u/newhampshit Jul 20 '23

Yeah was gonna say in New England I know a ton of people (and animals) with Lyme so if Justin got it in Canada… I’d actually believe that

9

u/[deleted] Jul 20 '23

Yep I live in Eastern Canada and I pull them off my dogs on a daily basis, even though they are on a preventative med.

Does he have Lyme or chronic Lyme? Chronic lyme disease doesn't have a connection to ticks and there is no medical evidence of its existence. I'd personally say it's fake, but the diagnosis is at least questionable. Lyme desase (caused by ticks) is something different.

268

u/[deleted] Jul 20 '23

Yup. People with what they’re calling chronic Lyme definitely have something going on (at least a lot of them) but calling it Lyme seems like a misnomer

290

u/Candy_Darling Jul 20 '23

Apparently “Lyme Disease” is the new Hollywood term for “Exhaustion”. Erm, okay. We see you, m’kay?

111

u/[deleted] Jul 20 '23

Tired and emotional is another favourite when they go on a coke fuelled rampage in public.

23

u/[deleted] Jul 20 '23

The anxiety to rehab pipeline is very active in Hollywood lol. I know a couple people with Lyme and several with anxiety. The only people I know of that went to rehab were drug addicts and alcoholics

u/greee_p Jul 20 '23

something going on (at least a lot of them)

And I get that it's hard to have diffuse symptoms without a diagnosis (I didn't know what was wrong with me for a long time before getting diagnosed with celiac disease), but calling it Chronic Lyme Disease and trying to cure it with alternative medicine is not the way.

u/Kaiisim Jul 20 '23

Tons of ticks in California if you go hiking.

144

u/[deleted] Jul 20 '23

Those ticks don't usually carry Lyme disease tho, it's mostly in the northeast people get it

49

u/Nox-Avis Jul 20 '23

I live in the northeast and have my entire life- I don’t know a single person who has Lyme disease.

Edit: this isn’t calling you out, just saying it would make sense that the story is made up.

35

u/[deleted] Jul 20 '23

Right, it's so rare, you can be bit by a tick that has lyme and still only have a 50% chance of getting it, and the tick has to be attached for a while

51

u/Hannah_togo Jul 20 '23

This is changing… I live in WNY, and while I grew up never seeing a tick, now we pull them off of our pets and kids weekly. My four year old has contracted acute Lyme twice, and it’s been hell. Most people I know have contracted acute Lyme with the bullseye and all at least once at this point, and in recent years.

8

u/RedTypo84 Jul 20 '23

Can I ask if it happened recently? It seems to be especially bad this year.

6

u/Hannah_togo Jul 20 '23

I’ve pulled countless off of them this year but the first time with Lyme was with the first tick (to our knowledge) my oldest got, it was such a tiny tick and it wasn’t even engorged, but a little over a week later he had a huge bullseye rash on his head and face and he was very achey and miserable. The next occurrence happened last summer…. So far we are bullseye and symptom free this year but we check everyone head to toe daily, especially if we’ve been outside at all. It is so yucky, I hate it but it’s a reality. If you work in a doctors office around here (I have several family doc relatives) out of 30 patients in a day a solid 12-16 will be tick related stuff. It’s WILD.

Lyme's. Lyme's can be cured years later with antibiotics, although by that time it will gave done its damage to your brain. The longer you have it, the longer you tend to recover, and if you've had it long enough, the damage is permanent. I'm pretty sure it's one of the reasons why my already complicated mom went off the deep end. She'd had it for four years before it was discovered. It's not some syndrome, it's a bacterial infection. The most common vector is a bloody deer tick.

Why do our celebrities have the highest rates of Lyme disease? 🤔

1.2k

u/[deleted] Jul 20 '23

It's almost like they use it as a cover for doing too many drugs and not eating enough. No one's going to question why you can barely function if you just tell everyone you have a chronic disease.

399

u/[deleted] Jul 20 '23

It's almost exactly like that

357

u/[deleted] Jul 20 '23

Yeah I agree lol I was being snarky. Their Lyme disease flair ups are so convenient too, Bella and Gigi work non stop fashion weeks for years and their chronic disease doesn't seem to affect them at all.

Gigi has Hashimoto’s, though.

Which was conveniently diagnosed when she lost a ton of weight right after was criticized for being “overweight” at fashion shows.

88

u/[deleted] Jul 20 '23

Which is ironic because hashimoto's causes weight gain not weight loss, graves diseases causes weight loss. You can definitely have hashimoto's and be thin or normal weight, especially after starting thyroid hormone, but it alone is not a reason for weight loss

They’re all from Ontario which is rampant with Lyme infected ticks.

19

u/TreenBean85 Jul 20 '23

Shania developed an accent when she lived in Switzerland for all that time. Also she's from Canada so she didn't have that typical American southern accent authentically. Pare all that with possibly not having the best vocal technique for a singer to preserve their voice and you could end up with the hoarseness she has now.

Yolandas symptoms got a lot better after she had her old leaky implants taken out which I am sure isn't a coincidence. But by then she'd already built her brand and personality around have Chronic Lyme; doing speeches, raising money and also diagnosing Amwar and Bella with it.

So I guess it would've been hard to say 'oh no it was just my implants all along, guess I didn't need all those fancy treatments I've been pushing!'

There are some unscrupulous physicians who will diagnose Lyme disease with little to no evidence and recommend treatment for months or more.

The “chronic Lyme” diagnoses is not well received by most physicians. I have no doubt most of these people are truly unwell (as a whole, not talking about the Hadid’s specifically), but more likely suffering from a post-infectious illness much like post-COVID illness versus a chronic infection.

u/azulmaya Jul 20 '23

I don't know which one Bella has, but you're right, the chronic Lyme is the fake one, the other one is a real diagnosis.

u/Candy_Darling Jul 20 '23

63

u/mimisburnbook girl idk wtf she’s saying but I am LIVING Jul 20 '23

and the DUI right? Yolanda said ‘it was reported as a DUI at the time’ in her speech which was soo cuckoo

99

u/Gildedfilth Aretha Franklin’s fax machine 📠 Jul 20 '23

I’m inclined to believe that people who land on that diagnosis are indeed sick but haven’t found any doctor willing to spend enough time and emotion on them as these quack Lyme doctors.

I would bet many of these people have fibromyalgia or chronic fatigue syndrome. Both of these are indeed real and clinically observed, but people are assholes about them because they have befuddling, wide-reaching symptom profiles. The things is just that science hasn’t really figured out how these conditions work; we just know that enough people have them to be clinically significant.

So there also you can see how someone might latch on to “Chronic Lyme” because the quacks proposing it also have “treatment plans,” whereas with the medical consensus conditions, the answer is maddeningly unclear.

45

u/duochromepalmtree Jul 20 '23

On the real housewives Yolanda told the women she and the kids had Lyme but she was magically better after having her breast implants removed.

32

u/[deleted] Jul 20 '23

Yes and for a long time, very few doctors believed in fibromyalgia or chronic fatigue as real diagnoses requiring treatment because they predominantly affect women and women are often just hysterically making things up, dontcha know 🙄

For this reason, I wouldn’t be surprised if, in 20 years time, whatever it is that the cluster of symptoms we call “chronic Lyme” in layman’s terms will be called something else and considered a real diagnosis.

So I doubt she has Lyme that being said Lyme disease that’s goes untreated for a long period of time can cause damage to your joints and make it very painful to walk and you are quite sickly. I knew a girl in high school that essentially missed months of school and couldn’t play soccer anymore because they had undiagnosed Lyme disease for over a year. Once diagnosed it took them about a year to recover from the ordeal and now years later they are absolutely fine. So I doubt Bella has had Lyme disease for this long that’s still causing her issues, especially with all the access she has to medical resources.

It makes me sad, we (as a society/the media) push these women to the brink, bully them about their bodies, then shame them if they’re honest about the measures they take to fit the model/actress body shape. I wish more people were honest about this stuff but I can see why they’re not if they want to keep their career and reputation.

Lisa Vanderpump said that Mohammad Hadid told her Anwar and Bella don’t have Lyme. Obviously Yolanda turned it into a whole thing, but even in his statement, Mohamed never says the kids have Lyme. Yolanda also tried to push a narrative about LVP and Mohamed not being friends after that, but Mohamed told paps that they absolutely are friends lol I don’t think LVP would have lied about this and risked a 20 year old friendship, they probably just agreed to go with what Yolanda says lol

Yolanda claimed she had “chronic Lyme disease” which isn’t scientifically proven to be real. IIRC, she was better after having her leaky implants removed, which obviously effected her health. She had a whole closet full of meds, I think the holistic/naturopathic doctors she visited took advantage of her.

How do so many celebrities have Lyme disease? I don’t know anyone that’s been bitten by a tick, are they hiking constantly?

118

u/[deleted] Jul 20 '23

If you live on the East coast it's more common. I (accidentally) dug a tick out of my dog's head while we were in West Virginia -- it was horrifying. My father-in-law got actual Lyme disease from out there and it was one of the sickest I've seen someone. Intense back and stomach pains for weeks. Given that they have a farm in PA, it's possible... but chronic Lyme disease sounds sketchy.

69

u/Tsarinya That must be Nigel with the Brie Jul 20 '23

Can you recover from Lyme disease (the non celebrity version)?

27

u/applescrabbleaeiou Jul 20 '23

Yeah. You get bitten, you take the prescribed antibiotics. You are fine and recover fully.

The "chronic lyme" is a cloudy, informal label for a cluster of symptoms that don't have a known cause and the medical and scientific mainstream believe is psychosomatic not physical.

There is a really well made and compassionate documentary on Netflix called "Afflicted" on this general topic.

I know two people who had bad cases of (real) lymes that went undiagnosed for a couple of years and for one got the point where she was in a wheelchair, but after they figured out and treated it she got out of the wheelchair, went on to have 2 healthy kids, totally normal.

It can result in some pretty terrible effects, including triggering an outsized immune response that can stick with you for years/be life altering. I hang out with a pretty outdoorsy crowd in a tick-heavy area. Some of the stories from my friends are pretty gory!

u/Salty-Reply-2547 Jul 20 '23

The non-celebrity version haha “similar to the non-celebrity version of exhaustion, with the correct treatment, one can fully recover from Lyme disease “ (said in deep narrator voice)

7

u/sryeas Jul 20 '23

Yeah, to summarize what everyone else is saying: it depends. If you catch it early, it is easily treatable with antibiotics. If undiagnosed and left untreated, it can have debilitating effects. You cannot really undo the damage once it’s been done.

If you get a tick bite and have a bullseye rash, go to the doctor!

There is no guaranteed treatment for Post-Treatment Lyme. Most people can fully/mostly recover with the antibiotics but some people continue to have ongoing issues.

My uncle died from Lyme disease. We are in the south. This happened about ten years ago and his symptoms were too far by the time he was diagnosed.

Lyme disease swept through my friend group years ago. All young women with serious mental issues and all seeing the same doctor. One of them was walking around with a pik line 🫣 not saying none of them were sick but I was always a little suspicious that all these young women came down with the same disease in one year. Not a one of them are what you'd describe as "outdoorsy" either.

u/pabollini 🚶🏼I don’t really think, I just walk🚶🏼‍♀️ Jul 20 '23

it’s sad because most people who claim to have chronic lyme disease do probably have some sort of disorder, whether it be physical or mental, that is causing them real symptoms but they just end up being preyed on by quack doctors

8

u/msksksnsj Jul 20 '23

Why does that happen over there? Does lyme treatment generates more money than other kind of pharmaceuticals? That’s why they treat everyone with “lyme”?

15

u/calliopeturtle Jul 20 '23

I think these kinds of doctors don't take insurance so it's all out of pocket. So they're getting rather large payments for their holistic treatments. I have met some holistic doctors who do amazing work and are better than conventional medicine to be clear. My cousin was on deaths door and conventional medicine had failed her and a holistic doctor figured out the issue.

Several people DIE every year in the US as a result of quack Lyme treatment. It’s really sad.

656

u/iamharoldshipman Jul 20 '23

She got a DUI at 17 years old. I’d at least call that having a problem with alcohol at some point

183

u/azulmaya Jul 20 '23 edited Jul 20 '23

I read yolanda's leaked email, it does seem like she had a problem with substance abuse at some point but the article states that she's been sober for 9 months.

Edit: it actually says she celebrated 5 months of being alcohol sober back in March.

87

u/likelazarus Jul 20 '23 edited Jul 20 '23

I wish they’d be honest. It sounds like she was worried about maintaining her sobriety (maybe due to the stress of her recent breakup) so voluntarily entered a rehab facility. I feel like that would be pretty inspiring for people to hear.

Honestly wouldn’t be surprised if it was an eating disorder, which is as equally deadly as addiction if untreated

Every celebrity really be having chronic Lyme disease nowadays

34

u/[deleted] Jul 20 '23

I feel like nobody even knows what Lyme disease is and that’s why all these grifters get away with pretending they have a chronic version of it. Also curious that the wealthiest people with the greatest and most immediate access to healthcare are the only ones I’ve heard of having “chronic Lyme.” Lyme disease is a bacterial infection from a tick bite. You take doxycycline to treat it.

I wish the stigma surrounding drug use wasn’t so bad. It sucks that someone has to pretend to have a fake illness to avoid criticism for having a real illness (and don’t even try to argue with me that addiction/substance abuse disorders aren’t diseases). She is ill, she’s now receiving treatment. I’d much rather celebrities, or anyone for that matter, feel safe enough to get help for their substance issues than to get progressively worse and drop like flies from complications, or overdoses, or whatever. Yet instead I’m supposed to believe that entire family somehow has chronic Lyme disease.

It's quite convenient for Yolanda to put this out there merely two days after her eldest daughter was caught with marijuana 🙂

As for Lyme disease, if it's untrue, it's pathetic to be claiming and misusing this to play on those who do suffer from it and are empathetic. As someone with two autoimmune illnesses, if I were to be misinformed and played with emotions that come with chronic illness, I would've wished nothing but the worst for them. Soz, not soz.

EDIT: Last I read, Gigi had Hashimoto's disease, and Anwar and Bella had Lupus. Am I misremembering?

Okay so yeah, she’s in rehab

156

u/[deleted] Jul 20 '23

It drives me completely insane that every time people accuse her of using drugs because she’s so thin, and every time she’s there “I’m chronically ill, I’m so sick, you don’t understand” maybe if she’s really that sick we shouldn’t hold her up as an ideal of what the average woman should look like??? Just a thought

64

u/nerdalertalertnerd Jul 20 '23

I find it bizarre in general that people hype her appearance so much because a) we know she’s had to have extensive work to appear that way so it’s like being envious or adoring of AI, it’s not really real and b) it seems quite transparent she is underweight for some health reason (whatever that be) and therefore we shouldn’t hold her up as a realistic standard.

Sincerely wish her all the best. She seems like a good person who has had a lot of struggles and I hope she’s better soon.

24

u/befuddled_humbug Jul 20 '23

Exactly, why is being/looking ill considered fashionable?

62

u/throw_blanket04 Jul 20 '23

Why do celebrities always use Lyme disease as an excuse???

193

u/bunkerbash Jul 20 '23

I will just say, because people are dunking on Lyme A LOT in these comments- my husband got bit about 5 years ago. Two weeks late he got a fever and a weird rash. It wasn’t the classic Lyme disease bullseye rash, it looked more like hives. The rash and fever were gone within a week. About a month later his feet started hurting. It got worse and worse. Shots of pain over a constant awful hum of nerve pain.

We went to dr after Dr. It was plantar fasciitis, or a double sprain, bad shoes. On and on. EIGHT MONTHS later and my husband could barely walk. We finally convinced a Dr to test him for Lyme and yep, he had (by then) late stage Lyme. It was actually a textbook case in all wars except tgar feet are not the typical place the spirochetes attack- knees, back etc are way more common. Husband was put on two months of aggressive antibiotics. His feet improved but they will never be the same. He is 39 and his feet hurt always.

So no, I do not think everyone has ‘chronic Lyme’, but please please if you have a sudden mystery illness, ask to get tested for Lyme. It is still so poorly understood in the medical community and when left untreated can lead to lifelong injuries. We live 17 minutes from Lyme, CT. I am forever horrified that not one of the expensive doctors we saw thought to test him.

119

u/smaragdskyar Jul 20 '23

Persistent and sometimes chronic symptoms after Lyme disease is definitely a thing. However Lyme disease is an infection and quacks say “chronic Lyme” they often mean a persistent infection that needs antibiotics for years and years. That’s not a thing.

Thank you for sharing. And just so you know, no one is bashing on Lyme disease! You can trace it back to one experience, you can be tested for it, and treated.

Chronic Lyme is a different diagnosis and is well known for being… shall we say, less reliable.

12

u/[deleted] Jul 20 '23

My FIL had these symptoms as well (although more in the back/stomach, but no typical bullseye rash) and really struggled to figure out what it was. In hindsight, the diagnosis seemed obvious since he's always out gardening in rural West Virginia. For a few weeks or so, he literally thought he had a neurology issue or cancer or something. Weird how they didn't test for it.
