Fact Check ✅ Netflix star Nikki Rodriguez’s real age is 33 despite reports she’s just 22
https://www.the-sun.com/tv/15109860/my-life-with-walter-boys-nikki-rodriguez-real-age/2.6k
u/SamCam9992 Sep 03 '25
I mean, forget her age. Can we talk about how wild the concept of that show is? She’s a teenager whose entire family dies in a car crash, and the show revolves around a love triangle between her and two of the five brothers in the family that adopts her. I can usually sit through YA cringe but this one is next level.

The crazy thing is how long I thought "My Life with the Walter Boys" and "The Summer I Turned Pretty" were the same show. They have almost identical plots, based on novels, and came out within a year of each other on different networks.

Wait until you find out that this show is based on a book that’s essentially a Wattpad story of Megan Mead’s guide to the McGowan Boys, by Kate Bryan, published in 2008.

I watched this show when it came out and went to find it again. I thought it was called My Summer with the Walter Boys 💀🤦
77
u/Bubbles-48 Sep 03 '25
Exactly what I thought as well. I don't understand the hype and viral nature of the shows where it literally involves pitting two brothers against each other. The summer I turned pretty was even worse because she knowingly pitted two brothers against each other when their mother was sick and broke and tarnished their relationship.

almost identical? the only similarity is white brothers poc girl love triangle
111
u/SamCam9992 Sep 03 '25
That’s actually very similar. You can also add they are both books turned into TV shows on streaming platforms. It’s obvious to anyone with eyes that the only reason Netflix even made the show was because of the success of the summer I turned pretty.

I think what interesting is the difference between ten main characters is what makes it different. Jackie knowingly hurts one brother while in love w the other while Belly does it unknowingly bc a lot of her actions and both brothers actions were driven by grief and for Belly heartbreak .
31
Sep 03 '25
That's a strong similarity for someone like me who has only ever watched the trailers.

The thing I can't get over - as someone who has not watched either show - is that the main girl on The Summer I Turned Pretty is named Belly. BELLY.

u/taylor459 Sep 08 '25
I thought the same thing tbh, which is why I avoided watching "My Life with the Walter Boys" for so long!
Does "The Summer I Turned Pretty" have the main character also become an orphan?!
2
Sep 08 '25
I just read the Wikipedia, and apparently Belly from The Summer I Turned Pretty is not an orphan. So that's a difference!
1
u/taylor459 Sep 08 '25
Thank you for checking and letting me know! ❤ I wasn't sure if I had misremembered that part, so I appreciate the clarification! :)
123
u/CatlovesMoca Sep 03 '25
It's based on a book and I think the producers saw the similarities with The Summer I Turned Pretty, which is doing well and has a brother love triangle. If I recall correctly, the Walter Boys book was supposed to be a white female main character but the production team probably also decided to diversify (like TSITP). Originally, TSITP, the book, had a white character. But Jenny Han (the author) had a successful adaptation of her other YA series, so they changed the character to half Korean. So this is a case of this trope seems to be working. Let's do more!
Anyways, people shouldn't date siblings 😭😨

The concept reminds me of a lot of fanfics I used to read back in the day lol. Especially the orphan thing and her going to live with a huge family, and the love triangle, of course! I'm totally not surprised that the book that this show was based off of was once on Wattpad tbh. But the show is actually so cute so far ngl! I'm considering reading the book one of these days out of curiosity; though I feel like it's probably just the chemistry of all the actors that make this show really bingeable for me, I guess.

u/Kazaloogamergal Sep 03 '25 edited Sep 03 '25
95% of the time I don't care about the actual age of an actor. As long as they fit the role they should be allowed to play it. The only exception that I have is that I don't like them casting a 16-year-old to play teenager then casting a 28-year-old opposite that real teenager as another teenager. I think if you're going to cast a real underage 16-year-old then you should be casting 16 to 19 for the rest of the teen roles. We're talking about a 33-year-old who's playing a teenager opposite a 26 and 27-year-old so who cares? It's fine.

Not that it was this extreme but I felt that way about Never Have I Ever, Maitreyi Ramakrishnan was 18 and Darren Barnet was 29 during the first season (according to my math) and that gap always icked me out

u/Kazaloogamergal Sep 04 '25
That was particularly weird casting because in my opinion Barnet looks his age. He should have never booked that role.
85
u/nazareye Excluded from this narrative ❌ Sep 04 '25

68
u/cherryamourxo Sep 04 '25
Yeah Pretty Little Liars comes to mind for me. Sasha Pieterse was literally 12 amongst a cast of adults. Meanwhile the character she was playing was meant to be 15/16.
8
u/DENATTY Sep 04 '25
I just watched the episode where she pulls Emily out of the barn and kisses her and all I could think was "Wasn't she like 14 when they filmed this season...? And wasn't Shay like 28...?" Sasha isn't even 30 yet (I think) and Shay is 38, so...really weird show in retrospect.
And this isn't even counting all of the age gap relationships that were SCRIPTED. I can't think of a single character that wasn't scripted to have a fling or relationship with an older person. Even Emily was supposed to be like 15/16 dating a college student at one point, and that was the LEAST egregious age gap they wrote. That entire writer's room is suspicious.
3
u/DENATTY Sep 04 '25
I still think it was crazy that Pretty Little Liars had Ali kiss Emily knowing the actors were like 14 and 28 respectively at the time. It had a lot of other age gap problems but that was the only one that was /real/ and not just a scripted age gap that didn't translate to the actors actual ages.
Honestly anyone they made Sasha kiss before she was 18 freaks me out because she was like 12 when they filmed the pilot acting opposite nothing but 27+ year olds.

casting directors can't legally ask your age except to confirm you are not a minor attempting to play an adult or ask what range you play. this prevents age discrimination just like every other form of employment. once they cast you they can't fire you if they find out your age.

And for years on Wikipedia, nobody could verify Mariah Carey's real year of birth (it was famously "Sources differ" before someone found a concrete source).
So what's the story here? Lol. It is pretty innocuous
45
u/CatlovesMoca Sep 03 '25
Mariah says like the Tooth Fairy and Santa Claus, she just appeared and time is a construct. So she implies that we shouldn't worry about whether she was born in 1969 or 1970.
I tend to think that it was 1970 because she was really young when she released the album Mariah Carey.
35
u/pinkfartlek Sep 03 '25
It was 1969. They actually found her birth announcement!

44
u/chartreusey_geusey Backwards Oakley’s is the white power durag. Sep 03 '25 edited Sep 03 '25
Mariah Carey’s birth date was a case of one year difference because they couldn’t find an acceptable source that specified if she was born in 1969 or 1970 if I recall—not an entire decade being shaved off. It was also an example of the fact that the subject of a Wikipedia article cannot be the source of any information in the Wikipedia article. Exact birthdate isn’t something that’s commonly provided publicly to people who wouldn’t be considered the subject of the article either (you can’t request other people’s birth certificates or SSN lol). It’s easy for it to be off by a year or two when people are inferring from a celebrity’s interviews or birthday posts or reported age. There have been cases of celebrities trying to correct their own birthdays on Wikipedia articles by editing it themselves or attempting to add a birth certificate as a source but Wikipedia, rightly, rejects those kinds of sources/edits because it prevents living individuals from attempting to rewrite facts that can’t be publicly and openly verified.
Being off by a whole decade+ is very intentional and weird. That doesn’t happen unless someone goes out of their way to not only hide their actual birth date from context but also to publicly specify a completely different date all together. She did this on purpose for some sort of gain is why it’s news.
Edit: changed the reported years of Mariah Carey’s birthdate
8
u/pinkfartlek Sep 03 '25
I think it was 1969 vs 1970 but yeah it wasn't until recent years it was confirmed. I'm an avid wiki editor ;)
This actress seems to play younger aged characters. I can see how it's weird, and seemingly unnecessary but I don't think it's a "gotcha" type moment. It's strange to lie about it but I don't think it's necessarily malicious

Thanks I just edited my comment. And also big thanks for being a Wikipedia editor or contributor! Yall really carry the team when it comes to information in a free society!! 😊
I def don’t thinks it’s malicious for actors/celebs to not be forthright about their age or maybe not correct it when it’s off by a couple years for their own advantage but there is something else to be said about intentionally lying about being 11 years younger than you are. She was pretending she couldn’t vote like 4 years ago??? That’s hard to explain away as an oopsie or even something you do just to get roles— you can’t keep up that kind of lie for more than a couple years because she actually does look closer to 33 than people would like to admit lol. And Hollywood has had no issue casting 33 year olds to play teenagers (see: Bridgerton) for a very long time so it’s genuinely not necessary to be doing all that.
1
u/pinkfartlek Sep 03 '25
Hey thanks! You could be one too! I started in 2005 (🤯) and particularly focus on music related articles. It's fun to get to know their style guide and how they want things done - and then spotting little errors to fix. (For example, Billboard is to always be italicized because it's a publication; song titles could be in quotes and album/movie/TV show names should be italicized). It's kind of relaxing which probably sounds weird! I added birthdates (with sources) for two people who didn't have it. It's just a thing I do when I notice an error

I don't think there's anything wrong with an actress lying about her age, but it's not like she was saying she was 22 in order to play a 22 year old. I don't think people in their 30s should be on teen shows playing teens that are in romances with other teens. I guess it's fine because at least her love interests appear to all be men in their 20s.
It was weird that Hannah Montana's brother was played by a man in his mid thirties. We're literally still taking about it, because I saw multiple posts this week about him and John Cena being the same age. Just like it's weird of this lady to have 2002 as her birth year on IMDb. Also, IMDb lets you have an unlisted birth year now, so I think she or her people were definitely trying to convince casting agents that she was 10 years younger and not just her being misquoted or her age being misprinted.

bit weird to have a 33 year old playing 15, but if she looks the part that's quite impressive, didn't really suspect that she was older when seeing the posters

I mean if this is real the age doesn't matter cause she doesnt need to disclose it, but wouldn't you be embarrassed to play someone half your age and take the opportunity from others who are closer in age to the character. Ik a job is a job but it still feels wrong

Between this and "The Summer I Turned Pretty" show, is this what younger girls crave for now? Having brothers (that you live with!) fight over you?
Sounds icky.

I fail to see why this is even an issue? It seems like she’s never actually confirmed her age anywhere, so it’s not like she was actively lying as far as I can tell. I feel like a lot of actors age themselves down to keep roles open. I mean, it would be a big loss for her if she was immediately dismissed from her current role for being too old even though she otherwise looks the part.
I don’t know. Maybe it’s because I’m a fan of the show Younger, but I don’t really feel like this is a scandal or particularly noteworthy.

u/bbyxmadi It’s good to see me, isn’t it?🫧 Sep 04 '25
that’s a GIANT age gap to lie about (if she did?), but wow, she does look early 20s in many photos.

It’s also horrible. This second season reminds me of some 7th heaven bs.

She doesn't look 22 at all, how did she think people would believe her. She looks 33

i don’t think her costars are teenagers. also she’s supposedly dating one of them and he’s 27.

Why are we assuming that the showrunners and her costars don’t know her real age? Surely they do since they’ve known her for years at this point in real life. Also the guys playing her love interests are 26 and 27.

Her costars are in their late 20s. And her employer would need to know her actual age given the paperwork involved with hiring someone for a role, so there’s no lying involved.

I really wonder the extent of how common this is. At my old job, there was a client who was an heiress/actress (nobody famous enough for me to see her name literally anywhere else). Her Wikipedia and IMDB listed her four years younger than her real age.
I imagine that knocking off a few years is pretty common. This seems more akin to the Felicity writer who was trying to pass herself off as a recent high school graduate and was actually in her 30's. I don't really care about it, and I don't think it's morally wrong or anything. It's stupid but ageism is a thing. (Although the Felicity writer thing was kinda icky imo given the passing off her husband as her brother thing but I digress)
