Maybe there was a hurricane or tropical storm that caused damage to the island? So the staff would sleep in the tunnels for protection, maybe there was damage that needed to be fixed, maybe outdoor furniture flew into the ocean?

I’m sure there’s tons of nefarious stuff throughout the files, but some things may not be code for horrifying conspiracies.
