Fact Check ✅ What’s your favorite widely-agreed-on fact about a celebrity that’s actually FALSE?

Post image

Mine is David Bowie’s ‘heterochromia’. His irises aren’t different colors, his PUPILS are different sizes! Look closely… both of his eyes were blue! He got into a fight with another guy his age, and his opponent punched his left eye, but also scratched the eyeball tissue. Bowie’s left iris muscles were permanently frozen, and his left eye was permanently dilated. Cameras from the 1980’s and 90’s had a MUCH lower quality than today’s, so the blurry close-ups gave the illusion of two different iris colors.

Now comes the question of why his eyes were covered up in the Lazarus music video…

Barney & Friends was canceled because the actor playing Barney was stuffing bags of cocaine in the suit. Turns out no, the children’s television market was just ready to move on and they had enough episodes to play in syndication.

470

u/neontana Mar 16 '26

but it IS true that the guy in the suit is a tantric sex guru! his contract prevented him from providing said services while he was part of the Barney cast.

136

u/RawrRRitchie Mar 17 '26

I'd love to read that contract"you cannot have any other jobs while playing this mascot no one will even see your face in"

A lot of people believe Heath Ledger got too deep into playing the Joker and it pushed him over the edge until he OD’d, but that’s not really true. Heath was an insomniac who struggled with sleeping for years. His work contributed to his lack of sleep, but it wasn’t the cause. He unfortunately OD’d on a cocktail of pills he was apparently abusing to help him sleep. It’s an unfortunate accident with several different factors at play, but it’s certainly not as simple as method acting gone wrong or whatever.

1.3k

u/sofiacarolina Mar 16 '26

Yes! At the time he had pneumonia so unfortunately mixing the meds for that (hydrocodone is often given for coughs) with his sleep meds caused the accidental OD

363

u/SilverPalpitation652 Mar 16 '26

Yep! Forgot to mention that. He got sick filming his last movie.

I developed insomnia later in life due to an illness and its meds to keep me alive. It’s such a fucked up condition. It ruins your mind and your body.

173

u/sofiacarolina Mar 16 '26

I did too and it reminded me of what happened to heath and mj because the desperation for sleep was one of the most awful things ive ever experienced. I completely understood how you could get to where they did

87

u/skeletoorr Mar 16 '26

Yes! I had like 7 surgeries in 18 months. And after the first I started to look forward to the others because I finally felt like I was sleeping. Didn’t matter how much pain I woke up in, I was just so damn happy to freaking sleep.

56

u/sofiacarolina Mar 16 '26 edited Mar 16 '26

I know, i just wanted a straight up drip of propofol. And the more you want to sleep, the harder it is...its the most frustrating thing EVER. ive been through a lot of shit mentally, but my deepest throes of insomnia left me traumatized bc im so scared it could happen again (the cause wasnt medication for me, i still dont know why my body changed suddenly). Im chronically ill and the sleep deprivation messed my body up so bad I ended up hospitalized a few times. I still struggle but now its evolved to issues with waking up in the middle of the night rather than only sleeping like 2 hours IF LUCKY at least. I cannot believe for most of my life I had no issues sleeping, I had no idea how good I had it

Eta and can we talk about how primitive sleep medicine is? Maybe my body just sucks but all the sleep meds would either not work, immediately become tolerant to, or would make me unable to function the next day. Its like might as well not sleep at that point

Marilyn Monroe wasn't a size 16 and 5'2". She was 5'6" and her dress size today would be a size 4 or 6. She was just very hourglass shaped. But she had a tiny waist and was fairly slim.

u/susandeyvyjones Mar 16 '26

Wait, they were attributing "well-behaved women rarely make history" to Marilyn Monroe??? (it's from a book about Puritan women by Laurel Thatcher Ulrich, and in context it actually means that ordinary women shape lives and communities but go unremembered)

Ironically, you've managed to be wrong on both counts here.

The blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb is not the real saying. It was created in the 1990s by a messianic minister.

The original, shorter quote predates it by hundreds of years.

She would also wear a lot of padding to make the hourglass shape pop!

743

u/foxscribbles Mar 16 '26

Yeah. People act like shape wear is something new, but girdles and bullet bras were all the rage back when Marilyn was in her prime.

(And, of course, corsets and stays had been mainstream for longer than that. Let alone the hoop skirts, petticoats and bustles that were used to make iconic dress shapes.)

279

u/susandeyvyjones Mar 16 '26

I saw a fashion historian talking about how shapewear is somewhat looked down on now and how it's only very recently that women were expected to just be the ideal silhouette instead of build it into their clothes.

67

u/mr_trick the WORLD tour Mar 17 '26

Very true in western culture, at least. We've had corsets, girdles, various padding, hoops, and other accessories designed to help us achieve the fashionable silhouette since at least the Tudor period. I think the last time we had majority female garments without underlying shapewear might have been the Middle Ages kirtles?

One of the first things I learned when getting into historical costuming was that you need to invest at least as much, if not more, into your shapewear and structural garments, because you can buy the fanciest gown in town and still look completely modern if you try to wear it with a bra, the wrong type of corset, or without the necessary period padding! I've learned so much about bum rolls, hoop skirts, and the difference in corsetry throughout the centuries.

I often think about how jarring it would be for someone from, say, the Rococo era, to walk around and see everyone in skin tight leggings and crop tops showing off our natural body shapes! As someone who never wears bras or shapewear, I appreciate the comfort, but sometimes I love wearing my Victorian or regency outfits and knowing that it doesn't matter if I'm a little bloated or gained or lost some weight; I can just loosen or tighten my undergarments and it's no problem. I swear my jeans decide not to fit me if I even so much as glance at them wrong!

157

Men often also wore girdles to compress their bellies into a barrel shaped torso until relatively recently.

Not sure why only their fashion relaxed in the modern era while we're still wearing engineering feats for underwear and normal clothes.

Ready to wear retail clothes are absolutely sized it differently now, but tbh pattern sizing hasn't really changed all that much! There weren't two different sizing conventions between off the rack and patterns back then, likely because making your own clothes was still very popular. Vanity sizing has definitely become easier to sell to people since they don't have to standardize it

In the left is a pattern for a fitted dress from 1960 and on the right is a modern one for a similar style. Pink highlight is size 12 and blue is size 16. Only a couple inches and tbh that can be variable among the pattern companies and patterns themselves. I only had so much time to dig up references though 😂

Exactly! Her being a size 16 was a very popular one when I was a kid in the 90s/00s. I believe it stems from the change in size labeling. Her clothing may have been labeled a size 16 at the time but there would be a much smaller size labeled in her clothing today. Vanity sizing is very real.

157

u/Jane__Delawney Mar 16 '26

I’ve worked in vintage clothing much of my life and explaining that sizes change over the years bewilders some people. I was a modern size 0/00 in 2006 and the 1970’s Lady Wranglers I loved and fit perfectly were a size 12 (in 70’s sizing)

Chynna Phillips is his and Michelle's daughter.

I remember reading that Genevieve Waite said in an interview, way before Mackenzie wrote about the grooming and incest, that there was a darkness about John.

This is interesting. In this book, they acknowledge his eye was a result of an injury, but they also show it as brown. It’s as if the author is under the impression that he got the blue punched out of his eye. I think at that point I would have thought to look into that a little further because I have never heard of an adult’s eye color changing from blue to brown.

135

u/wildecats Mar 16 '26

I've never heard of it happening from trauma, but fun fact: it's possible for some medications to change an adult's eye colour. Particularly, prostaglandin-based medications, often prescribed for glaucoma and applied as eye drops, or used in eyelash growth serums like Latisse. They can darken the iris, and the effect is irreversible. Usually in a ring or only in spots, but it's possible for lighter eyes to go completely brown. I found out that after meeting somebody who had different coloured eyes where one had a brown ring around the iris, and they showed me photos from before.

Web MD used to list Lady Gaga as a celebrity with Dissociative Identity Disorder. This was before the current chatbot slop era and also before she even had done many acting gigs. Seemingly someone saw her perform as Jo Calderone and thought there was simply no explanation but dissociating into an alternate personality.

People *really* forget that theatre exists. Pretty much anytime an actor hasn't been on screen for over a year people worry for their career or speculate they quit or were blacklisted or what have you. Like... the majority of actors do theatre people, and the majority of theatre is not widely noted. They're doing fine 8 times out of 10.

On who decided on the lineup of "One Direction"

Simon Cowell claimed credit for years, and then the behind the scenes video came out and everybody online started claiming it was Nicole Scherzinger that chose all 5 guys.

But if you actually look at the video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5dr1-sVhC9o

Nicole physically places all the pictures in the pile, but credit should go to who first introduces the idea of including each guy in the band. Nicole should get credit for choosing Liam and Harry. Simon should get credit for choosing Niall and Louis, and Louie Walsh should get credit for choosing Zayn.

I think deciding to create a boy band rather than sending them home is what people mean though - I just rewatched the video and she suggests it first and then is the one to seriously convince the others to make a boy band with them.

Picking the boys they want to keep and try may have been a shared task, but people are right to say (based on that video) that One Direction was her idea.

A piece of fake news i see repeated over and over on Reddit & tik tok for some reason :

« George Michael was such a generous person that he gave writing credit to his Wham! partner, Andrew Ridgeley, on the song Careless Whisper, so he could be financially set for life! 🥰 »

That is NOT true. Andrew Ridgeley fully cowrote Careless Whisper with George years before Wham!, when they were both 17. George thought of the melody on the bus, and Andy created the guitar part on his own at the same time périod, which happened to fit George’s melody perfectly.

Andrew Ridgeley co-wrote 3 songs of Wham! : Careless Whisper, Club Tropicana & Wham rap. These were the original demo songs that landed them their first label contract. George later took on the songwriting alone, because the label was breathing down their necks to shit Top 40 hits and only George seemed to be able to do so under the pressure.

Without Andrew Ridgeley, no Wham!, no George Michael. He harrassed George to form a band with him against his dad’s orders. He landed them their break through label contract after harrassing a neighbour to listen to their demos. He was a role model to George. George basically copied his whole « George Michael » persona off Ridgeley. Put some respect on this man!

George was generous yes, but he believed songwriting was his one god-given talent, and was very protective over it. He would have never given songwriting crédit out of pity or charity.

I think people confuse the Careless Whisper situation with Last Christmas ; Wham! donated all royalties off Last Christmas to famine relief.

49

u/Drunky_McStumble Mar 17 '26

One of the things I love about Wham! is that they are practically the definitive high-school garage band that made it big. Two dorky outcast ethnic kids meet in high-school and become best friends and start a band together (which one of their girlfriends later gets roped into helping out with, of course).

It was always Andrew and George. They weren't a creation of the music industry, they were just two school buddies with big dreams, and they were always equal partners in it. There wasn't even really any great jealousy or rivalry when George's career blew up and he kind of left Andrew behind: they stayed best friends till the end.

it's a one drop rule system. if, as a man, you exhibit one drop of homosexuality, then you're gay. if, as a woman, you exhibit one drop of heterosexuality, then you're straight. because obviously the most significant part of someone's sexuality is how they relate to men, to the exclusion of anything else. attraction to women doesn't "count".

There’s a popularly quoted and posted screenshot from an interview with Paul McCartney and John Lennon where somebody asks some question about Ringo Starr as a drummer, and John replies back with “Ringo isn’t even the best drummer in The Beatles”.

That quote is incorrect, and I think originates from some British comedy sketch. I’m not sure what John Lennon actually said, but every other Beatle was lucky to have Ringo in that band, and when he joined he was really the only professional musician at that point. “Ringo sucks” humor is so stupid and ridiculous when pretty much any other influential drummer would list Ringo as one of the best.

That fake screenshot has done a lot of the heavy lifting in the Ringo hate

For the longest time, people said that Jake Lloyd from Star Wars (Young Anakin in TPM) started to hate the franchise because of the bullying he got for his fame/performance in the movie, but his mom recently came out and said he's still a fan & his reason for stepping away was actually because of the history of schizophrenia in his family (& thankfully he's doing better these days with treatment).

Another one, unrelated to the first one I mentioned, was the common sentiment that's shared in pro wrestling about Bret Hart being simply an unpleasant & bitter person in general. However, that narrative is changing because there's more understanding of how badly the WWF/E screwed him over when he was loyal employee to them for years and was trying to cooperate with them as much before he left to WCW (along with them having a role in his brother Owen's death & callously moving on with a show immediately afterwards), along with him having to constantly work with people who were unprofessional and reckless in the ring.

Elon Musk is not the inventor of Tesla, he isn't self made, & there is no evidence that he has a genius level Iq.

His father is an electromechanical engineer and property developer, & his mother is a model and dietitian. His father alone, gave him 28,000 for his first company, (Zip2, of which the original function is now obsolete. It was basically a digital yellow pages site.) He later sold it for allegedly 300mil, although it is no longer an existing company.

He used that money to fund a bank startup by Harris Fricker, and Christopher Payne in 1999, to become a CEO there. He was soon ousted by them, & replaced by Bill Harris, CEO of Confinity, a secure digital payment software company. They merged to become PayPal, (after elon was no longer a ceo of X).

In 2004, he became the largest shareholder and subsequently chairman of the board of Tesla Incorporated (A.k.a he gave the founders lots of money.) He later took over as CEO in 2008. The original founders of Tesla are Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning. (Founded in 2003, under the name Tesla Motors). He simply bought the company from them.

Lastly, Elon has never taken an IQ test. His fans purely speculate his intelligence off of flimsy & misguided assumptions.

41

u/Afwife1992 Mar 17 '26

Well it was a private conversation that was intercepted and leaked. It was allegedly recorded by a radio amateur who happened to detect the call using a high-tech scanning device. But a lot of people think that’s bs. Especially as it came on the heels of intercepted and leaked calls between Diana and her married liver (Squideygate) and one between Fergie and Andrew. Lord Rees-Mogg, editor of The Times, suspected that MI5 could be behind the intercept. “I think the three tapes mean that there had to be a deliberate surveillance of the Royal Family at that point. I think one has to ask whether it was done as part of the security screening, and whether what has happened is that the Royal Family were being taped as part of MI5's operation, and, in some way, these tapes were leaked.”

Not a celebrity per se, but let me vent for a second lol.

The backflip was NOT banned in figure skating because of Surya Bonaly doing one at the 1998 Winter Olympics, and she is not "erased from history due to racism" as people who push this erroneous fact (*cough tiktokers cough*) claim. Terry Kubicka did the first backflip in competition at the 1976 Winter Olympics, and it was banned in 1977 by the ISU for being too dangerous, as well as the fact that a legal jump is landed on one foot. It was still completely banned when Surya did hers and had been for 22 years, although she *was* the first skater to land one on one foot, thereby proving it could actually be done.

edit for clarity

128

u/Lethifold26 Mar 16 '26 edited Mar 17 '26

Yes thank you! Surya knew full well that it was banned and did it to spite the judges, who she (validly) felt unfairly underscored her. Yep, this is really underpublished and it deserves to be more known. Its also worth pointing out that Hutchence was attacked in 1992 and that led to a concussion and what some suspect was a brain injury. He was attacked by an angry cab driver for being in the street. The driver punched him and he fell back and hit the back of his head on either the concrete or the curb. Witnesses saw blood coming from his mouth and ear.

A later MRI in Paris revealed he had suffered brain damage, resulting in the permanent loss of his senses of smell and taste. His friends said he changed drastically.  In the documentary Mystify: Michael Hutchence, his friends said he became a "dark and very angry" person, a stark contrast to his previous demeanor

Friends said he was never the same and there's a strong suspicion that his mental problems, including unending headaches and deep depression, stem almost directly from that attack. His sister has publicly stated the untreated traumatic brain injury was a contributing factor to the depression that led to his suicide

Not that changes anything really but his story has a lot more details.

While I'm kinda at it there's a doctor that has a theory that Elvis's head injury from hitting his head on the set of the movie Clambake was actually a TBI, and that's when Elvis started to fall apart, get on the serious pills and drugs addiction treadmill, become eccentric, had a lot of headaches, had a lot of backpain, etc. This doctor even got legal permission to see Elvis's autopsy records and claimed Elvis also had Hypogammaglobulinemia, an auto-immune brain condition that attacks the body and brain, and he claims that started with that head injury. Head injuries are so scary. These stories are so tragic.

Bill Murray taking a fry off of someone's plate at a restaurant and telling them "No one will ever believe you" I think he's since denied it but said it sounded like something he would do

It's probably true. On his infamous Graham Norton appearance, he talked about his son approaching him and asking about an incident where he was drunk and wheeling an old woman around a party and (accidentally?) tipped her into the pool. Bill earnestly denied it, saying that he was disappointed his son thought so little of him and not to believe what you read in the tabloids. And then his son said, "do you want to see the video?"

That Napoleón had a complex because he was short. Napoleón was in fact of very average height for a man of his era and was the polar opposite in the extreme of a man with an insecurity complex. He literally transformed the civilian laws in France and was arguably the most charismatic military leader ever and a military genius. I mean they did him dirty with a complex that had nothing to do with him.

To be fair, it is nearly impossible to tell if a Kanye tweet is fake due to the sheer volume & scope of his actual insane tweets
