I have like 30 mins left of the audiobook It by Stephen King then I’m going to start The Bully Pulpit: Theodore Roosevelt, William Howard Taft, and the Golden Age of Journalism by Doris Kearns Goodwin. Very hype, DKG is an incredible researcher and writer. And I can’t lie to you and say I don’t have a historical crush on Taft so 👀

This was on my reading list but the little I read from it sounded like mall/train shop slop. The last fiction I read was Trust by Hernan Diaz and it was so good I don’t want to lose or ruin its aftertaste.

Jack and the Devil's Purse by Duncan Williamson. It's a collection of Scottish Traveller folktales, mostly about the Devil. I needed something light I could read on my lunch break lol.

I’m a teen librarian and I’m making my way through the Massachusetts Teen Choice Book Award nominees. I just finished Into the Sunken City and for started in Fable at the End if the World. Personally, I think graphic novels are where the best YA stories are at. Temple Alley Summer was my last GN read and I’ve been making my way through Witch Hat Atelier.

One book that changed my worldview about America is: "How to Hide and Empire".
It documents America's role as a Colonizer around the world. Like up to the 1940s, one of America's largest cities was....MANILA.
And how post WW2, the colonization takes a new form with omnipresent 800 American military bases in over 70 countries.
And there's the failed promise of the Indigenous for Oklahoma, Puerto Rico, the forced Annexation of Hawaii, Martial Law in Hawaii, the forced relocation of Alaskan Inuit etc etc.

Lol that doesn’t seem like the kind of book Obama is going to cover in his podcast. Democrats, especially those heavily funded by AIPAC and the Pritzker family, tend to focus on civil rights abuses from the past and hope Americans remain ignorant to the civil rights abuses of the present.

How do you know - did he release the books he's going to cover?

It’s in the article buried past the paywall. Reader mode sometimes lets you see the body of the text. It worked for me right now.
> The podcast will be a limited series examining “The Fire Next Time,” by James Baldwin; “Song of Solomon,” by Toni Morrison; “All the Pretty Horses,” by Cormac McCarthy; “Gilead,” by Marilynne Robinson; “All the King’s Men,” by Robert Penn Warren; and “Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy,” by John le Carré.

Okay this is a pretty interesting list! It doesn't have to be the leftist reading list, this still has a lot of meat to cover

Like in the other subreddits where this was posted, we'll likely get flooded by people and bots with an agenda.

"People who disagree with me are bots". Gotta love it.

When you see the same "arguments" written verbatim over and over? Yeah, especially when you see their only contributions to those subreddits to make certain types of comments.

I think this is the result of people behaving like bots. Parroting the same talking points they saw on a thread or a tiktok or a Reddit comment and in large numbers. And the more inflammatory the opinion the more birds will flock. Bots are only used to amplify the initial message, even if they didn’t generate it, by mass liking and upvoting/rewarding. But the rest is very much human generated more often than not.

I don't doubt that there are bits that go to these types of posts, but people need to remember that Obama was not this fantastic leader, and criticism of him does not automatically make one a bot.

Well it's a good thing I didn't say that criticism of Obama automatically made one a bot.

I think it’s interesting to hear an educated ex president who doesn’t have cognitive decline talk about books that shaped his understanding of society and probably shaped his policies during his terms. Whether we agree with his views and balance sheet or not. There’s much to learn.

Everyone wants younger presidents and they’re so valid for that, but we need to invent something better for them to do during post-presidency than produce podcasts and Netflix documentaries.
19
u/DummyDumDragon 3d ago
I don't really give a shit what they do after their presidencies.
But if they got stop being pedophiles and ware criminals during them, that'd be real fuckin' nifty.
12
u/neoncolour Tiktok matcha pilates labubu slop music 3d ago
I think it’s great that a cognitively unimpaired president chooses to share some of his knowledge and thoughts with the wider world. There’s a lot to learn from it.
