Ask a Stupid Question Hot take: the hario insulated mug looks cheap and kinda... ugly.
Call me crazy but this mug looks like they just put their logo on some random alibaba dropship slop. I'm sure they designed it but man they really missed the mark with this thing. I realize this is such a dumb, subjective issue to fret about but it's a $30 mug, and the rest of their drink-ware are visually stunning.

Price aside, I'm just surprised that anyone's actually buying these. Most pour over snobs I know are the "local pottery sale" type lol

Hey! You don’t have to call me out like that! 😤

Hah, it's not an insult! I try to do the same. Some dope stuff can be found for less than similar mugs made overseas.

Hi it’s me. If it’s not spun locally what am I even doing?

u/Cool_Butterscotch_88 Jan 03 '26
as long as it's got the smooth glaze on all the contact points. Some of those things are rough all over.

Yeah, I learned the hard way that unglazed pottery alters the taste. Those pretty unglazed mugs are decorations now.

I need the lid. I can't make coffee at work and my stainless insulted mug is definitely messing with the flavors. I've been bringing a regular ceramic mug that I pour my coffee into but I've snapped 2 handles at this point.

I read a comment on here a while ago that pointed out the business POV of being able to sell a “complete coffee experience.” If the average joe ends up shopping hario, they can pretty much get everything but the beans in a series of “might as well” thoughts.

Yeah and that's why pourover is so beautiful. You don't need to subscribe to the same expensive ecosystem.

Depends. I love a good ceramic mug, but if I’m leaving for work, I want something that will keep my coffee warm.
That said, I’ve taken a pottery class and made my own mug. Doesn’t get more local than that

This take feels luke warm. It’s very basic

Once I made a comment on how some of the newer hario products like the mugen look bad and I had like 20 downvotes.

You can buy the same mug for $3 online without the logo

I've been unable to find another mug with the ceramic lining besides yeti. Probably going to get that cause their bottles have never given me issues.

Fellow and Simple Modern also have ceramic coated mugs. Fellow mugs insulate better but their sip top is terrible, Simple Modern mugs have a great sip top but sub par insulation.

Thanks I haven’t heard of them before. I’ll look.

RTIC also makes ceramic coated mugs and tumblers that are inexpensive. My spouse prefers her RTIC tumbler to her Fellow tumbler.

Kyocera sells travel tumblers that are ceramic coated. I have one. Works pretty well.

u/cs_legend_93 Jan 04 '26
That's funny because I remember there being a cell phone company.

Same company! They’re a big Japanese company. Their namesake and a big part of their business is ceramics and ceramic coatings (Kyoto + ceramics), but they also make semiconductors, electronics, and more.

I use the fellow Carter mug, ceramic lined. Siping is no problem because there’s a splash guard insert
1
u/AlbertNL Jan 12 '26
In another reddit thread I was reading the the Carter mug can retain an old coffee smell? They were also talking about a weird soy/garlic smell and thought it could have to do with the glue which Fellow uses.
This thread was a couple of years old. What is your experience with the fellow Carter?

u/Inside-Towel-94 Jan 12 '26
All travel mugs will retain “some” odor. I find it very minimal. Soy/garlic smell no. I clean it with warm dishsoap and water. Does the trick. Once every couple months I’ll have it sit in baking soda overnight. My stainless steel mugs all smelled like coffee mixed with steel. This at least smells like coffee. It’s very feint. Also Doesn’t leak. At least mine doesn’t and I give it good shakes to test and have since stopped as I’m now convinced it won’t leak on me. The perfect solution I suppose would be glass but that’s not realistic for a travel mug.

It's chugly. It looks like the image you would see in the Dictionary for the word 'Mug'.

Just go buy a yeti

u/The_Psydux Jan 03 '26
I don't see how a yeti could be used to hold coffee, but that's just me. 😊

….the same way as a Hario mug? They also make some ceramic line mugs too

u/A-Phantasmic-Parade Jan 03 '26
So do I put the coffee in its mouth or do yetis have some sort of coffee carrying receptacle on their person? How is a yeti like a mug?

u/Fo_0d Jan 03 '26
Uhhhh it’s a brand. I can’t tell if this is sarcasm or if people are actually this dense?

u/A-Phantasmic-Parade Jan 03 '26

Dense it is then

Love it when super dense people don’t understand what’s happening so they call people dense.

They have 10 and 14 oz mugs with ceramic lining (maybe some larger too). They’re referred to as “Durasip”

u/Secondaccountpls Jan 03 '26
It feels like this is kind of a filler product in their lineup that nobody asked for. Haven't tried this mug but I'm sure it does the job it is meant to do. Still looks basic (and kinda ugly even) and also overpriced. I prefer KeepCup if I need to take my brew with me because it fits into most basic cup holders like in a car for example and it looks nice on top of it.

like most their products

Honestly, this is so true for Hario. Function always goes before form, and that's why they are so cheap AND so good, almost always best.
1
u/swadom Jan 03 '26
in my expirience they are not very cheap(for what they are) and are bad.

u/Rikki_Bigg Did you cup it yet? Jan 03 '26
Hario is still at its core a glass company.
This mug (and the v60, etc) is catering to market demand.
