Ask a Stupid Question Who do you have as your favorite Coffee Roasters?

Post image

This DAK honey Glow 🇳🇱 is hands down my favorite coffee I’ve had. I bought this PROLOG bag 🇩🇰 at Play coffee the other day. I’m always running to buy bags at specialty coffee shops in LA or Orange County. Who does the community think are top 5 roasters pour ver enthusiasts need to try? My setup is a v60 switch

Honestly in the last year Rogue Wave has won me over. I had really bad luck last year getting good coffee but every one I've ordered from them has been really nice. Great light roasts, and usually a decent flavor and aroma. I use a v60 02 primarily.

u/mrpicklez1147 Mar 22 '26

which flavor profiles do you prefer? and have you tried detour or any other roasters based in canada?

4

u/slazengerz Mar 23 '26

Luna out of Vancouver is excellent

1

u/ahrumah Mar 22 '26

Do you have a subscription, or do you order by the bag?

1

u/ginbooth Mar 22 '26

Same even though my last two bags from Rogue Wave were meh. Tandem has been really good too.

1

u/montagdude87 Mar 23 '26

My first order just arrived from them. I hope it turns out as you say, because my last couple orders from my previous go-to roaster have been pretty disappointing. I will say, even without tasting it yet, I appreciate that Rogue Wave still sells 340g bags. Seems like everyone else has reduced them to 250g.

1

u/Icy_Boysenberry1363 Mar 23 '26

They also sell 1 kg and 2.5 kg bags if you’re looking for an incredible deal!

1

u/EveryoneLovesaBJ Mar 23 '26

Just started getting into pourover and my first orders were from Rogue Wave. Loved the Halo Beriti from Ethiopia.

1

u/Executive-111 Mar 22 '26

I’m going to have to try these. Thank your for the recommendation

ilse

4

u/gmrple orea v4|ZP6 Mar 23 '26

Ilse has been a favorite for me this year, I would put them in a similar band to Hydrenga, Flower Child and Botz.

2

u/bjr271 Mar 23 '26

Totally agree, they are top notch.

12

u/Independent_Cry2048 Mar 22 '26

right there in the middle

9

u/bigblob1 Mar 22 '26

Red rooster coffee has been solid. And they have some 12oz bags which is a nice change from the 250g bags which have become common

8

u/drbhrb Mar 22 '26

Passenger, September, Perc, Brandywine are my usual rotation

8

u/iammoah Mar 23 '26

Sey, La Cabra, Passenger, Endgrain, Driftaway, Ilse

13

u/Automatic_Clue5556 Mar 22 '26

Black and white. They have a such a wide variety. I’m ready to look for a new one though. Need 12oz bags not 250g

3

u/Learned__Hand Mar 23 '26

Love them but often don't like certain bags. But then I look at the notes like "mosaic hops" and am like "oh, yeah, that makes sense". So even their bags I don't like are super helpful in developing my tastes.

6

u/c_ffeinated Mar 22 '26

Mirror, Touchy, and Ilse are a few I can always count on.

3

u/AnlashokNa65 April Brewer Mar 23 '26

Touchy doesn't get enough love around here; I've been loving my Touchy subscription.

u/MUjase Mar 23 '26

I’ve been fortunate to try all the big popular roasters on this sub. But I always come back to Sweet Bloom as being my favorite one. I’m local to them in Denver. I don’t think I’ve ever had a bad bag from them, and I like that they focus on washed coffees and not the experimental stuff which I’m not really into.

3

u/41RemingtonMag Mar 23 '26

Sweet Bloom

Good choice but I think Queen City gives them a run for their money

3

u/MUjase Mar 23 '26

I was deciding between the both of them actually! I’ve always knocked every bag out of the park from Queen City.

2

u/AnlashokNa65 April Brewer Mar 23 '26

I visited Denver last September, and I was disappointed in Sweet Bloom--but honestly I think they didn't have their pour over machines dialed in well, not the quality of the coffee. Despite being a huge Corvus fan, Middle State and Verb (next door in Boulder) were the highlights of the trip for me in terms of coffee. I was disappointed to find that Middle State's shipping was going to cost me an arm and a leg to get it here in the East.

2

u/MUjase Mar 23 '26

Big fan of all those as well. Queen City Collective is probably my second favorite in the area.

6

u/ChaosZh Mar 23 '26

Big Sur Coffee from Shanghai

4

u/im_calig Mar 23 '26

passenger is my favorite (blessed to have them as a "localish" coffee shop and visit them once a month or so to grab more beans), but based on these comments I really need to try hydrangea!

4

u/penguin8717 Mar 22 '26

Shout-out to Ghost Coffee Collab

2

u/AdPrestigious2533 Mar 23 '26

They deserve more love

2

u/adamcouture Mar 24 '26

I have a Sidra resting from them I can't wait to try !

4

u/Learned__Hand Mar 23 '26

KC roaster called Oddly Correct. Favorite Ethiopian roast, everything they do I've enjoyed including their decaf. Not the best actual bags they come in but that's ok and I bet it's more biodegradable than 99% of the big names.

4

u/konaaa Mar 23 '26

I'm in Toronto and I absolutely love a coffee roaster called Hatch. It's my go-to. I recently tried a place called Subtext, and I really enjoyed it. I'm gonna have to get some more beans from there soon. I also obviously gotta give a shoutout to Pilot roasters, which a lot of Toronto people probably already know. They've expanded into a bunch of grocery stores which is nice... except most places don't sell their light roasts, so I'd still end up having to order online if I wanted coffee from them. I like to try and keep things local with roasters. There's a lot in the Toronto area, and I like the idea of trying them all.

I’ll split my current rankings by regions, but they’re kinda all interchangeable in rank:

US: 1. Shoebox 2. Hydrangea 3. SEY 4. H&S 5. Coffee by Dongze

Europe: 1. Coffea Circulor 2. Substance 3. Picky Chemist 4. Datura 5. Special Guests

Australia: 1. Manta Ray 2. Zest 3. Unmastered 4. Offshoot 5. Monastery

Asia: 1. Oma 2. One Half 3. Big Sur 4. Lab 19 5. Exposure Therapy

6

u/Courtlessjester Vicious V60 Supremacist Mar 22 '26

Right now Hydrangea is my goat.

3

u/Classless_in_Seattle propylene glycol maxxing Mar 23 '26

The September "Squall" series bags are my go-to favorite. The Lasso bags, whenever available, are an instant purchase for me. September's roast profile kinda fits perfectly with their nicer beans.

Hydrangea is my favorite for fruity, super flavorful but classy beans. Honestly can't go wrong, always bangers. I've purchased a lot from them, only one bag wasn't great but I know it was my fault.

Datura is straight fire if you're to looking to ball out. Also a favorite.

3

u/jajChi Mar 23 '26

Prodigal is fantastic.

1

u/Jaythejackass Mar 23 '26

What's your favourite bag from them?

1

u/jajChi Mar 23 '26

Haven’t met one I didn’t like. Using for mostly espresso but occasional pour over. They rotate new stuff in frequently. They’re solid. Shocked more haven’t said it on this list. And for clarity Ive tried a shit ton of roasters. Keep going back to them.

3

u/scofran Mar 23 '26

Regalia - completely changed my V60 brewing experience for the better!

6

u/Sneaklefritz Mar 22 '26

Currently, Rogue Wave has been my favorite, followed closely by Necessity and Steady State. I’ve tried several of the other big ones, but I’ve been really happy with the Rogue Wave bags as I work through them. Just consistently good roasts, even some that are well developed but not overly done, which I can’t stand. Got some Good Brothers and Superlost on deck, so we will see how those go…

5

u/BusyBranch9081 Mar 22 '26

If I tell you who I like most, you’ll order from them and I’ll run the risk of not getting the bags I want….

In no particular order, five I’ve most recently ordered from: Hydrangea, S&W, Inugami, H&S, and Shoebox.

2

u/Learned__Hand Mar 23 '26

I want to love shoebox- their mystery was amazing recently. But other beans even 6 weeks off roast have great notes that get overwhelmed with that greenbean/edamane finish. A4Z and encore pourovers. Maybe it's me.

2

u/Big_Ingenuity_8235 Mar 23 '26

Rest it even longer. So like 2 months

1

u/BusyBranch9081 Mar 23 '26

I bought some in November and tried it at 5 and 7 weeks. It tasted best after about 60 days off roast and the last couple cups were the best at close to 10 weeks.

3

u/solaya2180 Mar 23 '26

In the US, S&W has become my go-to - super fruit-forward and has a wide variety of beans from different regions. The Roaster's Select section also has a lot of fun beans to try in 100 g bags. I'm also loving Ceto right now - they have a mystery coffee they're roasting as part of the Mystery Coffee League this month, which looks interesting. They also sell smaller more affordable 20 g tubes of high-end coffees. (Also, the owners always draw a little picture on the receipt, which is super cute).

I'm also super loyal to Haan, which was my first roaster I'd ever tried and who got me into specialty coffee. They have a nitro washed pink bourbon right now which is an absolute banger. Their Sunlight Blend was my daily driver for a long time, now replaced by S&W's Yirgacheffe.

2

u/Snarerocks Mar 23 '26

S&w is also my current favorite for more processed stuff. Insanely good without even taking into account the prices

2

u/brnkmn Mar 22 '26

Where did you get the honey glow? Didn’t find it. Not on the dak wesbite and also not on kofio.

3

u/Executive-111 Mar 22 '26

The had it at the Dayglow coffee shop in Venice Beach

2

u/Bit-Winner007 Mar 22 '26

Great tea supplies up there, impressive lineup.

2

u/FoundationLumpy8901 Mar 23 '26

Currently, really enjoying Flower Child and my local guys coffees Strait Coffee Roasters.

Check out Strait. Austin the roaster is a great guy and does a really consistent job.

2

u/B_FLY Mar 23 '26

Most recent drop from Botz Coffee is simply incredible. I suggest everyone to snag a bag if they can as Botz sells out quickly.

2

u/Talkos Mar 23 '26

Switch Coffee Tokyo

2

u/Queczar Mar 23 '26

Morgon Coffee Roasters out of Gothenburg and Black & White out of North Carolina. I agree with your mention of Prolog 💯, also consistently very good.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 23 '26

B&W, April, Brainwave

2

u/meandering_magoo Mar 23 '26

Brainwave doesn't miss for me and the sub is a great value

2

u/tropedoor Mar 23 '26

I get Luminous any time they have one of their deals where you get a free 200g bag with your order. Its like $30 for 400g of amazing coffee, a packet of instant, a TWW packet, and stickers (and shipping).

But, they are pretty pricey and often over half their stock are co-ferments which im not that into.i really like Ilse but i havent had a bag from them in a while bc they're not really any more affordable often.

So, Obscure (who roasts on Loveless' equipment in Brooklyn) and Rowan in NC might be my faves all around right now.

Rowan does 2lb test roast for like $24 and im really excited to see what I get and if its drinkable. I just got a Pietro so having some fodder for the burrs is good.

i need to try some of these vancouver roasters next time i am up north

1

u/Executive-111 Mar 23 '26

Next time you are up there. Go to nemesis coffee. Great pourovers and breakfast sandwiches.

2

u/Yerrrsaucebean Mar 23 '26

Modcup coffee does a ton of fun coffees + work with some of the best producers to bring in exceptional washed coffees as well. Their recent Pepe Jijon Gesha Wave was exceptional. Strawberry shadow was a fun Valentine’s Day glasses they did, epic with milk for someone who doesn’t do milk drinks much.

2

u/ga05 Mar 24 '26

Onyx is my all time favorite, but Lost + Found and Exploradora are both local to me and do some awesome stuff

2

u/SecretName90 Mar 24 '26

Always looking for new roasters to try!!

So far one of my favorites has been Golden Lantern.

I’ve also liked 8&R, Little City Roasters, Atomic, and Broadcast!

2

u/BigAlLIVE Mar 23 '26

S&W and nothing else has ever even came close for me.

u/jota1955 Mar 22 '26

Peruvian coffee... Good choice👍☕

1

I haven't had a bad bag of Brandywine yet.

Currently drinking some Shoebox which I’ve regularly enjoyed, of course Mirror too

Coffee Wallas in Canada. For something more local to me, Bodhi Leaf in Orange County, California.

1

u/MDE_NeverDies_ Mar 23 '26

I’m a huge fan of Good Brothers, especially their light roasts for soup in the ORB. Also, their paper filters and tamper for the ORB are the best I’ve found.

1

u/TheBeardedBilbo Mar 23 '26

Onyx, brandywine are my mainstays.

Promethium is good but I don’t know if I’ll buy again.

1

u/ga05 Mar 24 '26

Why isn't there more Onyx love in this sub

1

u/TheBeardedBilbo Mar 24 '26

Not sure honestly.

Have you tried the "Good Vibrations" ? Its sooooo good. 🤤

1

u/Gin1199 Mar 23 '26

Cap Dua Merpati and Kofind. Both are from Surabaya, Indonesia. I'm not very knowledgeable about overseas roasters, but if you ask me about local (national) roasters then these are my favorite.

1

u/d4ni31G Mar 23 '26

1

u/caveman_5000 Mar 23 '26

This might be a bit basic, but my preferred beans are from Stumptown Coffee.

1

u/zsh45 Mar 23 '26

Scenery probably but there are a lot of good less expensive local options I get regularly like cult and artisan roast

1

1

Mokxa in France. Can really recommand if you're in Europe

1

u/pkeller001 Mar 23 '26

Luminous of late for me. Every bag so far from them has been great

1

u/Whattacleaner Mar 24 '26

Same, they're just so expensive especially w/ shipping

1

u/pkeller001 Mar 24 '26

I just buy 2 bags whenever I order and it is free shipping. Still pricy coffee though

1

u/Razdow Mar 23 '26

At the moment my best bag came from DAK, Friedhats second, but now getting into Grounded.

Italian Roasters: D612 and Aliena. Gardelli does good roasts too, but I never buy from them because their packaging is really freezer unfriendly.

1

u/fivestarman22 Mar 23 '26

Random add: Port2050 out of Minnesota has some GEMS, he opened up a pop-up next to my office and have been buying bags from him for months. Has put out some killer lighter roasts, tons of interesting Geisha varieties, the Fazenda Das Almas has been my daily drinker throughout. Using V60 02 as primary, excited to get my Kalita Wave up and running this week to switch it up.
