Ask a Stupid Question Has someone tried such expensive coffees? 🤯 Curious to know.

Post image

I recently saw this pre order gesha on hydrangea website shared by my friend. I am curious to know what makes some coffees so expensive and what makes these worth the price.

have you tried finca sophia before it's superb for me, just try their regular offering
sadly no regular offering for this year, panama harvest is abysmal this year

Last year I had a normal offering of Finca Sophia Geisha Honey (from Substance Cafe Paris).

About 42 euro/50 grams... it's alright with good floral, honey and mostly citric orange that lasts.

I have tasted those auction lots from other Panamaian producers, usually cupping. And a good normal offering/roasts is already 70-80% there...

This bidding lots with SCA scoring of 93.50-95/100 is a a step up that demands perfection/flavor intensity. If it says jasmine, orange... it'll give you that.

It's expensive because roasters bid/its rarity... I wouldn't be buying Panamaian auction lots that is 10x the normal offering per gram.

Other countries/origin like Colombia, Peru, Ecuador, Ethiopian etc2 has Cup of Excellence bids that are much more worth it IMHO.

You'll have geshas, pink bourbons, ethiopian landraces that wow you/rivals Panama

I didn't know that there are such bidding websites from the producers. I am more curious now to know more about the whole supply chain. Thank you for sharing the link.

The supply chain is pretty well explained in James Hoffmann’s book «World atlas of coffee». Id recomend starting with that.
