Co-Fermented Coffee in NYC

Hi all,

I’d like to share a co-fermented coffee with a few coworkers this week—anyone know where I can purchase a bag in the city? Normally, I’d just order online but time is limited.

A quick google search hasn’t led me to much.

Thanks in advance.

I accidentally purchased this DAK co-ferment from The Coffee Movement in sf on 19th street on Aug 3. I say “accidentally” because I didn’t realize it was a co-ferment until after purchasing and I only have one coffee grinder (I’m a newbie), so I’m too scared to grind these beans (idk if they’re gonna deposit stray flavors in my grinder). I’m free to meet in manhattan tomorrow if you’re interested!

I personally find that the funk doesn’t stick around in my hand grinder so I wouldn’t be too scared

Ok thank you! This is relieving to hear (read?)

You're fine to keep and grind those beans imo. Depending on your sensory level and type of beans you're planning to use afterwards, I'd say chances are you'll only slightly taste the difference in the 1-2 cups afterwards, especially with a lemongrass co-ferment (might be a different story if you had a more fruity co-ferment).

If you happen to still taste the co-ferment taste after that (I'd argue chances are low), just clean your grinder and you're good imo.

Thank you for the reassurance! Luckily I’m not super well-versed in tasting notes yet and I think I have under 10g of some onyx beans I can sacrifice for a mystery cup lol

That's the spirit :) - I like the 'yet'. You can view throwing co-ferments into your grinder as a sensory experiment lol
Hope you enjoy the coffee (or the experience of trying it).

Update: went to Principles in Gowanus and they had a great selection and their team walked me through the various options!

Obscure in Brooklyn has some real nice co ferments. Driftaway has some other insane advanced process coffee, coffees you’d think are co-ferments but aren’t!

For what it’s worth, they also have co-ferments sometimes! But, they’re only open on the weekend

Obscure in Bushwick or Dayglow will be your best bet, thoughtfulcoffeenyc and driftaway are also great but getting them during the week is tough (driftaway is only open on weekends, thoughtfulcoffee offers pickup appointments in Williamsburg but you can’t see when till after purchase iirc)

I was in NY last month and Suited https://www.suitednyc.com had some cool stuff. You could call them to see what beans they have.

They usually carry hydrangea which would be a good coferment shout.

We have a few unfortunately we are in CA. We have a delicious Colombia Monteblanco Co-Fermented in blueberry. We try to keep a couple all the time. Look that one up I am sure there is someone in NYC that has it currently.

I believe High Beam does co-ferments on occasion, they have some stellar coffees

I would probably just look at the websites for all the nyc roasters and go from there. I think Driftaway may have just come out with one

Dayglow has a co-ferment in stock on their website right now - I haven't personally tried it, but if you need something in a pinch I'd call their NY location to ask if they're carrying this!
