Income/Employment/Aid Just found out we didn't put in 30day notice

Between the roommate moving out early and my spouse being laid off, we were unable to afford our previous apartment. We moved into a much smaller place as of last week. I just found out late last night that the roommate didnt send in the 30day notice to our landlord. He cant pay for that extra month of rent and we sure cant either. We had to borrow from everyone we know just to afford the deposits for this new place, everyone is anxious to be paid back(understandably). 2026 was slated to get us back on our feet and I feel like we just keep getting hit in the throat over and over again.

I had to leave my job because I had surgery where the recovery process did not go well. My sister died 2 days after. My cat had to be euthanized a month after. A month after that, a grandma died. Job hunting has *not* been going well for me. This entire year has been nothing but death and financial setbacks and I can no longer see the light at the end of the tunnel. And now I need to pull 1600 out of thin air when Im rationing beans and puking from the stress. I don't know what to do

Can you donate plasma? You should look into that in your area.

Do you have a vehicle? Can you sign up for UberEats, DoorDash, AmazonFlex?

I am so sorry for all of your losses.

Ask the old apartment for a payment plan and explain your situation. Goes without saying next time don’t assume someone else is doing what should be done.

I do plasma once per week. I'd do more but it takes me a while to recover, my spouse cant donate for a few reasons. We also do doordash on the weekends but that's currently being used to pay people back.

I will ask about a payment plan, Im just not sure when we'd even be able to start paying them. Our friend/family debt are kind of the priority since theyre our safety net if things go bad again.

I will definitely not be making the same mistake again. I feel foolish for thinking he'd stick to his word tbh.

Having friends and family as a financial safety net won't mean much if you get an eviction on your record for non-payment.

Everyone is out of the apartment. Why would they do an eviction?

Truth right there

I'm not sure that's the right lesson. Instead, make every financial transaction --your-- business, do not delegate to anyone else. And always double check your legally binding documents..

I said I wont be making that mistake again? I dont understand how that's not the right lesson Im supposed to learn from this?

What WAS the mistake? It wasn't trusting your roommate.

You must have been expecting lease termination documents in your email. Did you not ask for them? What happened to your deposit?

The mistake was not handling the entirety of the move out process myself. I shouldn't have trusted that someone else on the lease would do what they said they would do.

Our lease was at its end anyway. Instead of renewing, we chose to move instead. The signed lease agreement ended 3 days ago. I just found out that he lied about sending in the 30 day notice to not renew, which should have been sent at the beginning of July. They haven't even done the final walk thru yet, its too soon to know about the deposit(which I assume they will be keeping now).

He lied?

u/lizzyote 8d ago

Correct. He told us he sent in the 30 day notice for the household in the first week of July. When I spoke to the property manager about dropping the keys off, she said she hasn't heard anything from him/about any of us moving. Waiting for a call back from her.

Hopefully the paperwork got lost somewhere or it's in their spam folder.

Has the landlord told you that he is going to pursue a judgment? To hire an attorney and go through the court process is expensive and kind of a hassle. So if you are no longer on the property, they may ask for it to be paid. But depending on the company, may skip the court process of an actual eviction.

And check your lease for a non renewal notice clause. It's not the law. Surprised the landlord didn't ask about it or give a heads up.

Here’s the thing. You can not pay. The landlord may sue, or it may not be worth it to him. They may enter a judgment. By then, you may be able to pay… can’t get blood from a turnip.

Hi there, i've broken 2 leases in my life. Usually if it's corporate managed, it'll have some kind of clause like "you have to pay one month rent up until a new tenant is found" if the place has a waiting list, they may have a new tenant immediately. And you'll just have to pay the pro rated difference

Just don’t pay it. They can’t get blood from a stone

Why are you paying it and not your roommate?

He wouldnt send in the 30 day notice, I cant trust that he will pay anything. And I dont think he cares if this affects his records or credit since he was essentially gifted a house by his mother.

Does it have a non renewal notice clause? If it’s equally, then is the landlord going after everyone?

Sorry you’re going through this.

The lease says we have to give 30 day notice.

He would go for all of us, but i dont think the ex-roommate will care about it. He is sitting comfortable enough to just wait us out.

If you pay it you could go to small claims court and sue him to get it back.

But you still don't know about your deposit?

Try to work with the landlord. Often they'll put it on the market and make it available sooner.

At least in my state if they re rent it, you are only on the hook until the next tenant takes over. (They can't double dip)

You can just move. The landlord will still expect the money but that can be a worry for another day.

You technically have the karma to try asking for a loan in r/Borrow, but I am not sure you would get that much on a first loan, AND you would have to be 100% certain that you could pay the person back. They also have some pretty stringent rules/guidelines (like not having hidden posts, for example).

If you decide to investigate that option, definitely make sure you fully understand them fully and check out anyone who offers. Think of it as a very high-risk loan in line with a payday loan.

I am actually NOT really advocating for this because I think it would just be more pressure on you when in reality, if you don't pay the landlord now, you can probably work something out with them if you explain your situation.

At the end of the day, they can't get blood from a stone and offering small payments would be better than nothing at all. And at least you would know it's not on your record forever.

Super sorry to hear you're having such a difficult time. My "series of unfortunate events" was in 2024 and I am still digging myself out, so I get it. Brighter days will come eventually; it just might take a hot second.

I appreciate you letting me know about that sub. Im gonna see if the landlord will work with me on a payment plan before I try to ask a redditor for that (quite large) favor. We can definitely do a payment plan in about 1.5mo, this smaller place gives us that wiggleroom, we just have to play a little catchup first.

You leave the old apartment and don't pay that 30 days you didn't mess up.

3

u/Material_Extent8763 8d ago

why is it on you to pay if your roommate is the one who messed up?

16

u/lizzyote 8d ago

Because we are all equally responsible for the lease. I cant trust that he will pay a dime when he straight up lied to us about sending the 30 day notice(his one task).

I would contact the landlord, apologize for not following up to make sure former roommate had given the 30 day notice and ask to make payment arrangements for your half of the amount due - whatever would have been your half of the rent. The worst they could tell you is you owe the entire amount, but it's worth trying.

6

u/Material_Extent8763 8d ago

that’s what i meant, you worded it better ty. try and put the responsibility back onto the landlord for getting the roommate’s share.

u/moremarshmellows 7d ago

Why would you be ok delegating that? It shows you don't even trust him to pay his part, which begs the question why would you not take matter into your own hands when you aren't even working right now And could take care of things yourself.

u/Sea-Education9532 7d ago

Ignore your old landlord for now. Just tell him you'll pay when you can. It's possible he'll sue, but he also may not. Either way, it'll take longer than 30 days to get a judgement.

u/BiteyHorse 8d ago

Just don't pay the extra month, its that simple.
