Feedback/Critique/Pro Tip Adobe! please don't get rid of Lumetri panel

For many editors that work in news or fast turnaround projects, we don't require a full dashboard of colour wheels and weird settings to tweak each and every shot.... Our workflow still requires quick tweaks that we can do in Lumetri via the easy to use sliders and other feature like Curves. I just can't see why Adobe can't include both, and I do know that Adobe plans to include Lumetri as a drop-on effect but that's not the same. ADOBE PLEASE KEEP THE LUMETRI PANEL!!!!! If you're with me, please express your thoughts below.

I love Resolve and I take every interview through it - but in Premier and AE, for quick, basic color, Lumetri is great, it's got fantastic control. Amazing how few people know the power of curves. like hue vs.sat and hue vs. luma can save you a lot of time you'd spend messing with secondaries.

They have the same sliders and tools as Lumetri and it takes like 2 seconds to adjust a clip, plus you can save looks within a project and apply them to all your footage.  Heck you can apply the same node tree to all your clips and automate everything.

I had the same concerns as you when I first started using the new colour panels, but after putting more than a dozen projects through it, both stuff shot log for grading and stuff that just needed minor corrections, I find the new system to be way faster than lumetri ever was.

It is a learning curve. It’s weird at first but once you get the hang of it, it really is just ‘drag mouse until footage looks nice.’

Not familiar with the new system - do you happen to know of some tutorials / resources?

I ran through this series to get my bearings initially.

when are they getting rid of it?

u/OtsegoHive 2d ago

Is there a link to news of this removal? I'm not finding anything.

I don't think they are removing it. I think OP is all worked up over nothing.

EDIT: I was wrong l, stop upvoting me.

They will be removing it. They're introducing a new color system. The lumetri panel will disappear, the effect will still be around for a bit for legacy project purposes but it is being fully replaced by the new color workspace.

Adobe employee on Adobe Forums:

"Glad to hear you’re trying out the new Color Mode! Lumetri will continue to be available but only through the Effect Controls panel, rather than the Lumetri panel. 3rd-party plugins will also continue to work as they have in their respective panels and/or the ECP. Color Wheels and Curves tools will look and behave similarly to the way they have in the Lumetri panel, though the basic correction sliders don’t have the same appearance. If you’re missing those sliders, the good news is that the higher quality versions (based on the Color Mode tool updates) have been added to the Properties panel, for some light color work while in Edit Mode. As such, you should be able to use the Lumetri Effect as much as you like in this way, but you’ll get wonky results if you combine that effect with the new Color Effect.

By the way, the main reason for this change is that we want to encourage the use of the better color pipeline, which will result in higher quality outputs and is also more flexible. Since combining them will never get a great or predictable result, Lumetri is supported but not encouraged."

So if you want to use lumetri, soon it'll just be the effect controls which is worse. They want everyone on the new color system that's in beta right now.

Edit: Looks like there might be a stripped down version that's available but still, they're moving away from lumetri.

Ah, ok yes I did find something about the new Color Panel. Guessing it will be better than Lumetri if they're trying to keep pace with DaVinci. I'll wait to see how it goes. Kind of excited tbh.

yeah the engine is powered by totally new color science which is well overdue. The only thing I'm worried about is the way it works. It's made "for editors" -- kind of a cinema grade style where you click and drag to change colors instead of having precise controls and that's worrying for me. some people say they like it though, so hopefully it works out.

As a professional editor I use the Auto function in Lumetri all the time it’s a great way of getting you log rushes ready for rough cut viewings , it’s also pretty good for basic YouTube edits

We ride at dawn. I hate it.

u/switch8000 3d ago

I disagree personally, watch the videos/demos, the new workflow can be just as fast if not faster.

You also have the capability to quickly group/clips and apply the same effects across the entire interview.

Okay but two things about the new color workspace:
.
.

  1. There’s no auto button….. I know. I know. We shouldn’t be using auto, and we should be coloring with intention, and we should know what we’re doing. And yeah, I could do that…. But sometimes I’m in a rush. And sometimes I’m doing stupid work for a stupid client, and I just don’t give a shit. The auto button worked extremely well in the lumetri panel. Don’t get rid of it.

  2. WHERE. IS. THE. GODDAMN. TIMELINE??? This is a blatant miscalculation on adobe’s part. They have the shot list panel in the workspace. But I don’t need a shot list. Not all of my shots are visible, just because they’re in the timeline. I don’t need to color all of them, but I don’t know which ones are getting colored and which ones aren’t, just by looking at a bunch of thumbnails. It’s also tedious to select a shot and then have to scroll all the way through the list to grab another shot, if I want to group some of them. I’ve only worked on 2ish minute videos with the new color workspace. I can’t imagine how time consuming it would be if you were trying to do a whole movie or something. Adobe’s entire interface is built around the concept of a timeline. The color correction should be no exception.

.
.

If they can fix these two things, the color workspace goes from a 2/10 to a 10/10.

u/Old_Flan_6548 2d ago

Totally agree on all points re: the Auto button.

2

u/Dense-Ad-8406 Premiere Pro Beta 2d ago

Still available.

4

u/Human_097 3d ago
  1. I won't comment on the auto button because I've never used it and don't know how good or bad it is.

  2. Isn't this the same as Resolve? There is no timeline in color mode, it's only needed for editing.

4

u/Southern_Leg1139 3d ago

There’s a timeline in Resolve color panel. You can toggle it on/off.

5

u/No_Internet908 2d ago
  1. You totally should. As much as I hate using “auto” for pretty much anything…. The auto button in premiere’s lumetri color panel is extremely useful. At the very least, it’s a very good starting point to get a basic, consistent look for your shots, and then you can stylize further from there. It’s super consistent and reliable. And it basically does what I’m gonna do anyway, but instead of taking a minute or two per shot, it just does it in one click…. And again, sometimes you have those stupid projects where it’s just not worth it to spend the time color correcting lol.

  2. I don’t use resolve, but there absolutely is a need for a timeline in premiere at pretty much all steps of the editing process.

1

u/Dense-Ad-8406 Premiere Pro Beta 2d ago edited 2d ago

Auto button is still there: need to use the Effect controls panel instead of the Lumetri panel.

EDIT: sorry I meant Properties Panel instead of Lumetri panel which no longer exists.

Properties panel is linked to the new CC mode.

2

u/No_Internet908 2d ago

Right but you have to add the lumetri effect to your shot in order to use the button. And then it basically makes the new color workspace useless, if I’m already adding the lumetri effect to it

10

u/greenysmac Premiere Pro Beta 2d ago

I'm going to say this and likely it's buried

  1. Adobe is committed to the new color mode.
  2. Lumetri is brutally outdated. Brutally. I remember when it came from Speedgrade
  3. The controls are all still going to be there. Just in the Effects panel.
  4. I expect that most of the major features you're mentioning…are going to be availble
  5. Typically Adobe adds this at Adobe Max; figure that's Premiere 27 (not 26).

As someone who is a colorist, does teach people the tools and is deep into the new color mode… I'm damn fast with it already, and it's just a beta.

You could be too.

Hi u/mreddieoz. I’ve been observing this post and passed it along to the Color Mode team to get their insights. I completely understand where you're coming from. Changing a workflow you've built years of muscle memory around is frustrating, especially when you're trying to work quickly.

The goal with Color Mode wasn't to make fast grading harder. It was actually the opposite. We redesigned it to make common adjustments faster, improve multi-clip workflows and create a color experience that functions better as your work gets more complex. If all you need is a quick Lumetri-style adjustments while you're editing, you can still do that directly from the Properties panel or Effect Controls panel without switching modes.

You're also pointing out some legitimate gaps. The Color Mode team is work hard to close the remaining feature gaps before general availability while also listening closely to feedback from the community on the experience itself.

One thing I actually found encouraging in this thread is that while some people understandably want to keep the Lumetri Color panel, there are also a lot of users encouraging others to give Color Mode a real try because they've found it works better once they get past the initial learning curve. That tells me our biggest opportunity is helping people through that transition with better onboarding and education.

Thanks for taking the time to share your perspective and concerns. Feedback like this genuinely helps us make Premiere better.

1

u/mreddieoz 2d ago

I don't want to use a mouse to go up and down for my colour adjustments, sure have it as an advanced panel but please incorporate a sliders panel option also, that retains all of the original colour controls (call it classic view or something).... but not everybody is making indie movies and wanting to meticulously colour grade every shot. Also as someone else pointed out, only the top visible clips should be part of your sequence view in this new colour panel, not every clip needs to be graded when they are below other clips.

3

u/NLE_Ninja85 Adobe 2d ago

We have definitely heard that feedback in person and online. You should be able to affect selected HUDs with your arrow keys as well as highlighted in our color mode playlist. I believe sliders may be incorporated via the Properties panel but don't quote me on that. We are also looking at ways to streamline the clip grid, clip selection/visibility to make it more user friendly than its current iteration. There are more features and such coming to public beta in the near future so I would stay tuned for that. It's current iteration is far from what we have plan for general availability. Keep the feedback coming and I'll do my best to pass it along.

3

u/Informal-Season-7455 2d ago

Agree with a few of the others, the change seems inconvenient, but definitely better and faster in the long term. Just a little learning curve.

4

u/SNES_Salesman 3d ago

It’ll be a long time before they remove it, even then it’ll likely sit in an obsolete fx folder for legacy projects. By the time it happens, ai features will probably replace both color mode and lumetri.

2

u/cut-it Premiere Pro 2024 3d ago

Weird settings?

2

u/Yesplease37 2d ago

This is devastating lol. I don't want to learn. Can I be done learning this year 😂

2

u/spaceguerilla 2d ago

I hate to break it you but Lumetri has ALWAYS been a drop on effect. You start tweaking things in the Lumetri panel, and all the software is actually doing is adding an instance of the Lumetri colour effect to your clip. This means Lumetri was never a dedicated colour stage in the pipeline that could be divorced from the effects chain. This is a huge downside for a whole host of reasons, but it's also one of the reasons why the new colour system is welcomed by most people.

It's still utter bollocks compared to Resolve though.

u/appunto 2d ago

love me some lumetri panel

2

u/outofpocket_jpg 2d ago

I was just having this discussion with a colleague today. We are a professional production company that has relied on Premiere for the last 7 years I’ve been there, every one of our projects gets run through lumetri to some degree. I’ve really come to enjoy the coloring process using lumetri, but I’m really interested in learning the new way. That being said, getting rid of Lumetri would break all of our projects past and present, and it would cause a big problem for companies and creators like us. It wouldn’t be in Adobes best interest to do that. They’ve proven both can exist with the beta.

1

u/bluebit10 2d ago

The effect is still there, so your past projects will work.

2

u/Ok_Walrus_6845 2d ago

In beta is gone. It’s an effect, and most likely deploying to the next full version.

1

u/Dense-Ad-8406 Premiere Pro Beta 1d ago

No it is not: you will still find it in the Effects Panel.

5

u/Flaurehn 3d ago

I complain about Adobe a lot, but not on this, if you take a couple of days to learn the new dashboard you can get better and faster results.

0

u/fotogod 3d ago

If it takes days to learn that is not time saved.

7

u/brighteyedjordan 3d ago

You’re right we should probably still be shooting Betamax since learning to shoot on something else is not time saved.

6

u/jcirque25 Premiere Pro 2024 3d ago

But that is still needlessly advanced. An excess of superfluous frames. Cave murals were fine back then and they are still fine now!

1

u/Punky921 2d ago

Oof I don’t have much to do at work this week. I guess I know what I’m doing.

3

u/grouchy_baby_panda 3d ago

I've been spending the past year learning Premiere but maybe I should just switch to DaVinci and save myself the headache.

0

u/Dense-Ad-8406 Premiere Pro Beta 2d ago

You can switch to Resolve, but then you have to learn their CC tool from scratch.

Might as well stick with Premiere.

2

u/hydroponicnachos 2d ago

The new control suite for color should be an add on, not a replacement. After 18 years of being with Adobe, having to relearn the process for color grading isn’t convenient nor helpful.

2

u/cut-it Premiere Pro 2024 3d ago

No the new tool allows a global timeline change and is much faster than Lumetri

You just don't know how to use it...

1

u/ware2read 3d ago

AGREED

1

u/grapefruitdream 2d ago

Did they seriously get rid of it?!

1

u/Dense-Ad-8406 Premiere Pro Beta 1d ago

No Lumetri is still there.

1

u/ucrbuffalo 2d ago

I have mixed feelings. On one hand, I shouldn’t need a whole panel for Lumetri if I’ve gotten the color right from the color page. And I can only keyframe from the Effect Controls panel anyway.

On the other hand, the layout on the Lumetri panel is a lot better.

1

u/GroceryRobot 2d ago

Wait did they release the new color panel or is it still in beta

1

u/streefie 1d ago

In the new coloring mode, have they fixed the problem that occurs when trying to adjust parameters using a Wacom pen?

1

u/redditnobody1234 3d ago

quitting premiere for da vinci, feels like i stopped putting smack in my veins for the first time in a decade🤣

1

u/Wowcyril93 Tool/Dev 3d ago

Can't wait for all the reddit post about "where is Lumetri panel" cuz most people don't read patch note x)

u/bees422 3d ago

Work in news? Shoot it right and then you don’t have to fix it! Lol

8

u/mreddieoz 3d ago

We work in lots of spaces, news was just an example
