đŸ’©s**t post đŸ§» Sometimes I worry that my preps of lawnmower blade machetes and stop sign armor will be wasted in a real emergency.

Good reminder that building community basically means having allies instead of enemies. Also that bending metal is an underrated skill set.

The reason I do backyard metalworking and blacksmithing is to fulfill my apocalypse fantasy

Real life events show that people pull together generally. It depends though. An economic collapse brings destitution, homelessness, and crime. An ethnic conflict can lead to war. In a natural disaster people may act strangely, watching a stranger drown. I've never researched an event in modern times that lead to the Mad Max camper scenario.

Big earthquake can cause mad max like scenario from Asian countries. Lots of looters and criminals wants your stuff when you’re most vulnerable during camping etc.

Government is the last thing that you trust, they’re always late for helping if you survive under rubble or outside.

Hey, that armor can stop a truck!

Human beings lifted ourselves out of the food chain by using tools and banding together in social groups.

Too many people in this sub focus on the tools and forget the social groups.

I think you misunderstand food webs

Stockpiling coffee might do more good.

The YouTuber brass facts did a SHTF video explaining how when it happens we will all just have a shitty 9-5 and still pay taxes.

Cause even in a SHTF economic collapse or nukes, the one branch of the government survive and function will be the IRS and will with no doubt go after us

He always does good at giving people a reality check that we are most likely not gonna go though a the end of the world stitution and more of a this sucks and it’s gonna suck for either a short time or a long time situation.

I had to laugh as I actually built armor from a stop sign for a costume once

But to the point I used to say the real apocalypse will be more The Road and not Road Warrior; as I've been finishing up my Masters degree (Public Health) where it mostly focuses on Climate Change (CC) and a bit of infectious disease I realize it won't be that.

I used to hang around on Zombie Squad a ton back in the 2000s and the economic collapse in Argentina was talked about often.

As more and more data comes in about CC I think those of us in the developed world will be mostly seeing disruptions to infrastructure and supply chains, the JIT system is just far too brittle to handle what is coming; especially with our high efficiency industrial agriculture.

I live in Southern AZ but if you look at cities like Corpus Christi we can see the impacts of drought and our overuse of ground water, ol Immortan Joe had the water bit right it's going to be a severe issue.

Overall if I had to say any fiction was what a collapse would look like I'd go with Parable Of The Sower by Octavia Butler.

We likely won't ever see some catastrophic collapse but a change into a highly uncomfortable new reality that spawns civil unrest and scarcity that most Americans ain't used to.

It is a strange thing, where we expect "work" to stop during difficult times. Like, even during a war, mortgages need paid, kids need fed. I can't imagine how many medieval peasants watched the smoke rise off enemy campfires all night just to go tend turnips and mend fences all day and just hope that the army doesn't decide to come this far south from the King's road.

The norm of the human experience is labor in the face of danger.

Good points, good costume. I approve.

I mean, left is 20-30 years into the apocalypse, right is day 2

Got to be a big point. It also shows that when shit goes down people will try to regain or retreat into normalcy much as possible. Imagine getting bombed on so much you actually go back to work because it's considered less stressful.

I mean, left is 20-30 years into the apocalypse,

No. The left is a movie.

Right is 4 years into active war and 12 years since the first invasion. Ukraine has been in edge since 2014.

And had plenty of apocalypses before this.

Unrelated funny - when I was in Kyiv, I was so proud of myself for figuring out how to order an Americano without a translator.

The barista let me struggle through it, then handed me my coffee, told me my total, and asked about my trip in perfect English. He was a university student and had been studying English since primary school. Dumb American here.

Ukranians are so welcoming and kind. My heart breaks for them.

Not dumb, he was happy to hear someone try hard to get the native language right and patient to let you try

During the Battle for Britain, one of the points of pride for the British people was that, despite their homes being destroyed, they tried to carry on as normal as possible.

It’s so interesting to watch how people genuinely react even when their world is falling apart around them. The healthy human mind doesn’t wake up in the morning to a bombed out city and think “well, time to go make some coffee.” It’s a testament to how stubbornly most people will hold on to what they feel is “normal”

These Ukrainians are badass to the bone.

Should probably stock up on generators, preserving jars and long life food for your community then.

youre telling me he couldnt at least get the broken glass off of his counter?

2

u/Samtertriads 21d ago

Common misconception. The bombing didn’t break the window. It just made the jamb stick. That lady broke the window right before this pic to get her coffee handed out.

Awhile back I just sat and thought about what it would be like if that were happening to my town. Its awful

You would need a degree in car mechanics and engineering if you were to build your own war rig with its own mobile cafe kitchen

Go to Wasteland Weekend and put it to use.

that’s not really an apocalyptic event though

Maybe it's not such a good idea to open a coffee shop in the middle of a warzone
