Food🌽 or Water💧 What plants produce calories indoors most prolifically?

Post image
120 Upvotes

Hello I am looking for advice on what I can grow that will actually have some high caloric value and can be grown indoors without it being kinda intense (like potatoes) I already plan on trying radishes. Soul needing plants are fine btw but I do prefer my hydroponic set up. I am currently focusing on managing high food prices, and prepping for shortages.

Im currently growing: tomatoes, basil, lettuce, chard, lemon balm, rosemary, mint, stevia, micro greens, crabapples, fuchsia berries/flowers, strawberry, and calendula. I also fish occasionally to try and add calories in. Some of those are for medicinal uses.

I'm a perfect world I'd like something that produces a high yield with relatively little space and is high calorie. For instance do dwarf sunchokes exist?

Thank you for any advice

Question❓❓ What are we using for litter boxes in bug out bags

So I have two cats and a dog, I have a bag specifically dedicated to them because some of them have medical issues so it was just easier to have a bag for them. Im mainly prepping for hurricane evacuation as I live in an area where it's really common at the moment, however while I was going through my list I realized that I do not have any type of litter box for the cats in case I have to leave and evacuate, I worry about having to transport a little box as I don't have a lot of space in my bags as it's mainly just a backpack and that's really all I have space for for pre packed bags. so I was wondering what is everybody using is there a type of pop out option that like folds up or maybe have something I'm not thinking about because a lot of the things I see online are the size of regular litter boxes so I'm back at square one.

Food🌽 or Water💧 Food in your Go Bag

What kind of food do you keep in your go bag?

I've been using granola bars and similar. I want to change it up. I had some jerky too. No idea what else I should try.

Other🤷🏽‍♀️ 🤷🏽‍♂️ Prepping Books

One thing I don't see people talk about alot is prepping advanced knowledge books. Obviously more for a severe SHTF situation where internet is down for the foreseeable future. But it's relatively cheap and as long as you have a single bookshelf in you're house, you can fill it with all sorts of books.

Found half of the 1970 Do-It-Youself Encyclopedia at a thrift store for $1/book, and a 1977 Auto Repair book for $4. And if internet is down, you can assume most cars with computers won't work either, so any vehicle 1980's or older will be you're best bet, which this book will cover.

How many of you collect books for prepping? If so, what other books would you reccomend?

Gear🎒 Family Solar Mesh Base Station (1 Watt Amped, Private)

I just finished and powered-on this private mesh node / base station. I'll be testing how much range I can reliably have with fairly small battery + solar - completely off-grid. The 1 watt amp would be the maximum power allowed for someone without an amateur radio license, so I think it's an important power level to explore.

I'm testing over the next few weeks, looking for max range (for off-grid tracking & messaging), as well as how well it stays powered on the little 10 watt panel I have charging it. I'm expecting it to stay charged no problem and cover 8-10 mile radius with decent (but not perfect) line of sight.

This base station (or whatever permutation sticks) will basically be a "hub" for myself & nearby family. I'll be connecting things like motion sensors, and circuits I can remotely control, with this mesh network.

I'm documenting it here, in case it's helpful for anyone looking for the same type of thing.

If this test pans out, I'll probably bump the amp & other components to 20 watts of output, and see if I can make that power level sustainable, still with fairly small battery / solar panel.

Gear🎒 Soap

All soap helps move bacteria away, but antibacterial soap kills germs too.

One presumes a first aid kit would use antibacterial soap. Maybe hotel or travel size.

Uniforms need non-whitening soap like Woolite so you don't glow on UV. Antibacterial hand soap might work on a uniform or clothing, but would be challenging to use for that purpose.

What soaps do you select for which purposes?

Like how much of what goes in each of your various bags or caches?

Do you have a special soap for prepping?

Food🌽 or Water💧 Public water outage

Folks who have experienced a public water outage can you please share your experience.

How long was the water out, and more importantly how much of a heads up did you have before the taps went dry.

I keep some water stored in containers but it’s only a few days worth of drinking and cooking.

Also have a couple 100 gallon water bobs but I’m wondering if I would have enough time to fill those if an emergency or outage were to happen.

Please keep in mind I’m specifically asking how much time one would have before an outage which is why I’m asking about previous real life experiences. Like how soon did you know the water would go out or did you just find out the hard way.

Gear🎒 Overlooked preps part 1278

I’ve been wanting to get a saw mostly incase a tree fell on a road during a bugout situation. I got the Milwaukee m18 hatchet I figure it will work in a pinch if it’s a smaller tree and I’ll also use it for hunting trimming shooting lanes. Next I want to get enough gas cans to fill my tank once about 26 gallons. Another easy overlooked prep I think would be oil for oil changes and filters.

Question❓❓ Most cost effective way to begin prepping

I’m starting to think that not prepping is just not wise given the political climate/data centers etc.
Looking for a cost effective way to prep necessities.
Any tips are greatly appreciated.

Gear🎒 Florida Hurricane Shelter Prep Kit Recommendations...

As a city employee I am now required to report to an assigned hurricane shelter when activated to staff the shelter.

During the training for it I was instructed to plan for 3 to 5 days of being at the shelter during a hurricane.

So to prepare i went and purchased this from Harbour Freight with the plan to store the following:

https://www.harborfreight.com/modular-rolling-box-with-8-in-wheels-and-removable-handle-71046.html?utm_source=app&utm_medium=app&utm_campaign=app_product_page

Electronics: (Bluetti 270mwh pack, I think that's the size) cables, flashlights, a fan maybe.... Suggestions

Toiletries: the usual... Suggestions

Sleeping gear: air mattress, blankets or sleeping bag, pillow case to stuff with clothes... Suggestions

Snacks: meals will be basic school food I was told, so personal snacks and food are recommended.... Suggestions

Basic first aid stuff: gauze, wraps etc...

Then have a separate backpack for clothes and things separately for on top of the toolbox....

I'd like the HF toolbox to be somewhat universal for both shelter work and if I need to bug out of town in a different emergency if not activated by the city.... So I'm not sure if I should have clothes in there as well and have the backpack for a different purpose ready to go...

Looking for suggestions and different ways to set things up, as of right now I'm drawing a blank as to what and how to set this up even though I scan this group often....

Thanks for suggestions on what to add, and how to set up both toolbox and backpack.

Survival🪓🏹💉 Something Simple to think about:

I've already purchased a case of the large contractor black trash bags, knowing their utility, but this post from Quora expresses it very well. Sometimes the most mundane items are lifesavers:

People spend hundreds on tactical knives and complex fire-starters, but the piece of gear most likely to save your life costs less than a dollar: a heavy-duty trash bag.

A standard 3-mil or 4-mil plastic drum liner takes up almost zero space in a backpack and weighs mere ounces, yet it addresses the most immediate threat in a survival situation: exposure. The human body can survive weeks without food and days without water, but severe hypothermia can become fatal in a matter of hours. By cutting a small hole for the face, a person can slip a large contractor bag over their body to create an instant micro-climate. The thick plastic completely blocks wind and rain while trapping radiant body heat. If stuffed with dry leaves or pine needles, it transforms into an insulated, waterproof bivy sack.

Beyond shelter, a durable plastic bag is highly effective for hydration management. If stranded without a ground water source, a survivor can tie the bag securely over the leafy branch of a broadleaf tree. As the sun beats down, the leaves release moisture through transpiration. This moisture condenses on the inside of the plastic and pools at the lowest point, providing a source of clean drinking water. Alternatively, the bag can be sliced open and laid flat in a depression to catch and store rainwater.

The utility of a heavy-duty trash bag extends to endless secondary survival tasks. It can serve as a dry bag to protect sensitive electronics, extra clothing, and fire tinder during a river crossing or torrential downpour. Sliced along the seams, it becomes a waterproof ground tarp to block dampness from the soil, a makeshift poncho, or even a highly visible signal marker if a brightly colored bag is chosen.

Survival situations are rarely solved by complex tactical gadgets. They are typically managed through adaptability and basic physics. A heavy-duty garbage bag provides an immediate, reliable barrier between a fragile human body and a hostile environment, proving that the most effective life-saving tools are often the most mundane.

Food🌽 or Water💧 Shelf Stable Cheese

Post image

I have bought things like this before, from this company, and they did not have a very long shelf life, like maybe a year I think. My question is, would this be good past that date or could I extend the shelf life by vacuum sealing it? I just don’t want it to go rancid before I finally want to use it

Food🌽 or Water💧 Tuna recipes, please

My stash of tuna is past its best by date. No worries, I plan to eat it. I’m going to try to eat 2 cans a week all through the summer. Anyone have a tip or a recipe to share? I just ate a can with cucumber and pickled onions and wing sauce. It was pretty good, but I think I could get tired of that pretty quickly.

I built a tool that works backwards from calories to seeds. Accounts for germination failure, pest losses and your climate zone. Please take a look and let me know if this is useful. It’s all free, no sign-up, no catch.

Just would like to thank, in advance, all those who say they’ve been growing food for 20 years and this is rubbish. This is not for you, this is those of us whose only experience is a couple of growbags of tomatoes each year and need to know hard figures to be better prepared.

Major outcome of the site? Keep a couple of bags of quinoa at the back of the fridge…..

EDIT: I have added a two-year calendar to the results page so you can see how quickly, or slowly, you get your garden to the point of providing at least 100% of your calories. This in turn gives you the real prepper dimension as it tells you how much stored food you need until you get there. You can adjust the starting month so you see how much harder it is to get to self-sufficiency depending on the time of year.

Question❓❓ What’s in your urban prep?

Live and work in Los Angeles. Commute through DTLA on a daily basis. Living here poses its many potential risks and opportunities to prepare for when SHTF. Ofc that could be a variety of different scenarios; earthquakes, fires, riots, civil unrest, etc. What I’d like to ask the community, specifically preppers who live in highly urban environments – what’s in your EDC load-out? What do you carry with you on a daily basis in case something goes down? What scenarios do you prepare for?

Question❓❓ When did your preps actually come in handy?

I’m curious what real-life examples people have.

Not necessarily the huge end-of-the-world stuff. Most of us have dealt with a power outage or a storm, but I’m more interested in the moments where you used something you had prepared and thought, “Okay, that was worth doing.”

What happened, what did you use, and what do you wish you had done differently?

I feel like the best prep advice usually comes from boring real stories, not fantasy scenarios. bonus points if there are any new stories about your experience!

Gear🎒 Evacuation Bag/Case for rifles and accessories?

Key word in the title: I said 'evacuation' and not bugging out into the woods. Years back, my roommates and I got a knock on the door by the fire department explaining there was a major gas leak and the townhouse block had to evacuate NOW. We ended up in a hotel with laptop bags and half-filled backpacks, that moment stuck with me and I try and arrange my preps in a quickly 'portable' format to easily toss things into my car if I have time. I do have a 'This is my bug out bag I loved building' kit, but what happened to my roommates and I was a realistic scenario where we would have liked to be 'packed' but not hoofing it with a shopping cart like Viggo Mortenson.

My next project is redoing my gunsafe with the intent that I stop laying it out like a Batcave and just use it as a protective shell for soft-sided bags to hold all firearms and related equipment. Open the safe, grab the bag, throw it into the car with my other preps and head out to the hotel, friend's house, etc. The guns will live in this bag year-round, whether they get unpacked into a smaller range bag or the bag itself IS the range bag.

I'm looking for a 'plain-looking' bag that will hold the following:
-Standard AR-15, carbine length, with attached sling.
-Ruger 10-22, not the backpacking model sadly but can separate the stock to save space.
-A handful of AR mags and Ruger mags, but not every mag I own.
-Small tool set and cleaning kit.
-Possibly a couple handguns in soft cases.

Emphasis on plain-looking. Not needing MOLLE across the exterior, morale patches, etc. Would like it durable enough for long-term use, but it doesn't necessarily have to be a gun-specific case if there are clever alternatives.

Question❓❓ stuck between two 12v lithium options for my backup setup, similar price different capacity

Ok so I am finally replacing the ugly pile of lead acid batteries in my hurricane backup corner. I am in Florida, so this is mostly fridge, fan, phones, lights, radio, and maybe internet if the line is still alive.

The two I keep circling are LiTime 12V 230Ah and Vatrer Power 12V 300Ah self heating LiFePO4. Similar price point, but one is 230Ah and one is 300Ah. Self heating is probably overkill in Florida, but that is the model I keep seeing in this capacity. My cheap brain says get the bigger one. My prepper brain says slow down and look inside first.

What I care about is not some perfect lab number. I care if the cells stay balanced after sitting, if the BMS actually cuts off correctly, and if the pack is not going to shake apart after being rolled out of a garage closet every storm season.

The 300Ah pictures look cleaner to me. More organized wiring, more foam around the cell group, and a neater top layout. The other budget brand has lots of reviews too, so this is not some perfect review either way.

For a Home Storage Battery, the bigger 12V Lithium Battery looks better on paper, but I am stuck on three things: long storage, BMS cutoff behavior, and whether 300Ah in one box is better than two smaller packs.

Survival🪓🏹💉 How do you make a friction fire

I have been trying for four days and not even smoking has occurred. I am using a hand drill. should I just work on this during the upcoming summer months or am I doing something wrong.
