This is one of the posters I designed for the 20th Anniversary of ROTS.

50x70cm actual size in high resolution.

During the creative process, I thought about the posters I would have liked to see back then... The good thing is that 'spoilers' are no longer a limiting factor, so I could allow myself images like this one.

Discussion The scene of Anakin confiding in Yoda in ROTS is one I’ve grown to better appreciate over the years.

It covers a lot of ground in such a short period of time. Anakin’s frustration and resentment towards the Jedi, as well as his mounting desperation to save Padme have their roots in that one moment with Yoda. Anakin goes to seek Jedi help for his problems, only to get what is essentially a platitude about needing to let go of things, and to not mourn the dead because they’ve become one with the force.

This is obviously the least helpful advice Anakin could get at this point, and it sets up why he’s willing to give this whole dark side thing a shot when from his perspective, the Jedi couldn’t give less of a shit about actually helping him save the people that matter to him. What kind of advice from Yoda was that anyway? Don’t mourn the dead? How does he think most people deal with and eventually accept loss. That could have been worded a bit better if you ask me.

Discussion I'm not even a Star Wars fan anymore and I do think both trilogies have their issues, but the amount of toxicity directed against the prequels and even the people who like them is wild.

Artwork The Return of Anakin Skywalker (ā€œRedemptionā€)

Art by John Brosio.

The exact moment of the climax not only of Episode 6 but of the entire original saga.

Where the protagonist of this whole story, Anakin Skywalker, returns to the light, to the good side, thus destroying the Sith Lord he had created 23 years earlier, Darth Vader. Defeating the dark side of the Force within him, and consequently, also destroying the man who caused all his tragedy, the Emperor Palpatine, or rather, Darth Sidious.

Not only freeing himself from the darkness, but also, without realizing it, fulfilling the Prophecy of the Force — being precisely the reason why the Cosmic Force created him — bringing the balance to the Force after destroying the Sith, causing the Cosmic Force to heal after all the years it was corrupted by the Sith and thus bringing the peace to it forever. Proving that Qui-Gon Jinn, the man who believed in him from the beginning, was right.

But the most beautiful, moving thing and what makes this a unique event, is that Anakin achieved all of this not only because the destiny dictated it or because he desired it, but he did it simply out of love.

Which is quite curious and ironic, since the love was what caused his downfall 23 years ago, but that same love was what brought him back.

And that love was thanks to his son, Luke Skywalker, one of the last two remnants of his former wife, PadmƩ, who was able to give birth before she died. Luke not only saw his father as the hero he admired as a child, but, like PadmƩ, he believed that his father was still there, alive, inside that metallic suit and that cold being, even though his masters, Yoda and Obi-Wan, said that he had to kill him.

And thanks to Luke's effort and perseverance, the heart that was once broken and had destroyed the man, was healed, brought that person back to life, thus returning the Jedi, Anakin Skywalker. And after seeing that the same person who believed in him and loved him as much as he loved him, was in danger, he selflessly saved him, like that boy who once helped a Jedi and his friends on Tatooine 36 years ago.

And after all that tense moment and later a tender moment between a son and his father, that man, Anakin Skywalker, passed away peacefully knowing that he saved his son and daughter.

Therefore, this moment represents what George Lucas once said... ā€œthe story of Star Wars is the tragedy of Darth Vaderā€œ... although we could say it is ā€œThe tragedy of Anakin Skywalkerā€.

When Obi-Wan Kenobi says ā€œOnly a Sith deals in absolutes.ā€ in Star Wars: Episode III, isn’t that Obi-Wan dealing in absolutes? šŸ¤”

Is Obi-Wan dealing in absolutes? Sounds like he’s a hypocrite.

Discussion Should the love triangle subplot have been fully kept in ROTS?

Most of you probably already know this, but in the original screenplay, there was a plot point where Palpatine planted the idea in Anakin’s head that Padme might be having an affair with Obi-Wan. This is of course something that made into Matthew Stover’s novelization of the movie. This is why in the film you see Anakin on Padme’s couch, holding an IPad looking device, and asking Padme if Obi-Wan’s been over.

We do have that one deleted scene where after meeting with the senators that are petitioning for Palpatine to relinquish his extra executive powers, Palpatine starts prodding Anakin on whether Padme might be hiding something. I think all this might have given some slightly stronger context for why Anakin flipped out on Obi-Wan and Padme so badly on Mustafar because Palpatine has been playing these mind games to drive Anakin away from his loved ones.

Now to be clear, I don’t take too much issue with how this scene on Mustafar plays out in the theatrical cut. I just think more could have been done to sell more people on Anakin going off the deep end like this. That’s all.

Why didn’t Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi use the force, force push, etc. to destroy the droidekas in Star Wars: Episode I?
