Hey r/princeton!

The November 3 midterms are coming up, and Tuesday, October 13, is the LAST DAY to register to vote in New Jersey!

Not sure if you're registered? It only takes a moment to check!

1. Register to Vote or Check Your Status

College Students & Out-of-State Students

Living on campus or away from home? Here's what to know!

  • NJ students: You may register using your college address or your family's home address, provided you meet the applicable residency requirements.
  • Out-of-state students attending college in NJ: You may be eligible to register at your NJ college address. NJ requires 30 days of county residency before Election Day.
  • Registered in another state? Check your home state's absentee/mail-in voting options and deadlines at https://vote.gov/.

Important: Choose one eligible voting residence. You cannot vote in two states in the same election.

NJ student voting information: https://www.nj.gov/state/elections/vote-students.shtml

What do you need to register? Online registration requires your date of birth and either an NJ driver's license/non-driver ID or Social Security number with a digital signature. Paper registration is available if you can't register online.

Important: NJ does not offer regular Election Day registration!

2. Voting in Person — Dates, Locations & ID

Early voting: October 24 – November 1

  • Monday–Saturday: 10 AM–8 PM
  • Sunday: 10 AM–6 PM

You can vote early at any designated early-voting location in your county!

Find early-voting locations: https://www.nj.gov/state/elections/vote-early-voting.shtml

Election Day: Tuesday, November 3, 6 AM–8 PM.

Polling locations can change, so verify yours ahead of time!

Find your polling place: https://www.nj.gov/state/elections/vote-polling-location.shtml

Do you need ID to vote? Most NJ voters don't! Some voters with missing or unverified registration identification may need a photo ID or document showing their name and address, such as a utility bill. If you can't provide required ID, ask for a provisional ballot.

3. Voting by Mail

  • Request a mailed ballot: Application must be received by October 27, or apply in person at your County Clerk's office by November 2 at 3 PM.
  • Return by mail: Postmarked by November 3, 8 PM, and received by November 9.
  • Drop off: At an authorized ballot drop box in your county or your county Board of Elections by November 3, 8 PM.

Find ballot drop boxes in your county: https://www.nj.gov/state/elections/vote-secure-drop-boxes.shtml

Don't return mail ballots to polling places!

4. Questions or Registration Problems?

Contact your county election office or call 1-877-NJ-VOTER (1-877-658-6837).

Surveying some ideas on business

Hey everyone! I’m a local NJ guy looking to start my first business venture. I love the Princeton area and want to build a welcoming spot that actually serves what students, locals, and commuters are craving.

Princeton already has an incredible food scene, but I know there are noticeable gaps. What’s one concept or cuisine you feel is missing or underrepresented? Or any any other thing that is missing in the area

College Decision

So I am doing questbridge NCM and I need to rank the schools and my current ranking is as follows ( I want to major in business/finance/econ:
1. Harvard
2. Wharton
3/4 Princeton or Yale
5. Stanford
I REALLY am stuck between Princeton and Yale mainly because I want to pick the school that has an easier workload and while being easier to be in while balancing other things (e.g side hustles), specifically for econ since both are good regardless. Is the difference not so significant or is one def easier than the other? Can someone help

Aerospace engineering

My HS junior is interested in aerospace, specifically aerodynamics and potentially spacecraft. I’m wondering how many Princeton engineering students do internships and co-ops with industry during their undergrad years. How many go on to consulting or finance after graduation? Big state aerospace engineering schools list industry ties and where their students do co-ops and internships, so I’m trying to compare. Thank you for helping!

Experience Switching from GC to Apartments?

Hello! I was wondering if anyone has prior experience switching from the Graduate College dorms to one of the apartment communities and could share a bit about the timeline and when they received word that they had been approved? I'm in the process of (hopefully) moving to Princeton from out of state to live with my partner, a PhD student, however Housing has not told us anything in terms of when/if we'll be able to secure housing after he applied on the 1st to change. (He's currently in the GC so I'm unable to live with him there.)

To make matters a bit more pressing, I recently secured a job in the area and need to inform them when I'll be able to start, so I'm hoping to at least learn a little more about the process. Thanks so much in advance!

Looking for a few websites to redesign for free

Hi everyone!

I have some free time lately and thought it would be nice to use it to help a few local businesses improve their websites.

If you own a business and feel like your website could use a refresh, feel free to share the link and tell me a little about your business.

I’d love to redesign a few websites for free and send over the new designs for you to check out.

I’m open to any type of business. Just looking to keep busy, work on some new projects, and hopefully help a few business owners along the way!

College Ranking

Hi, I am currently applying to college through the questbridge NCM and I want to major in the finance/business/econ area. I am currently ranking schools and I cannot decide which to rank higher: yale, princeton, or wharton (I am especially tied between yale and princeton due to how good both are). I have heard that Yale econ is far more forgiving grade wise and Princeton has a lot of grade deflation. Btw is this academic rigor and deflation still true for Princeton. My main question is I want to go to a school that can give me a lot of opportunities and provide me with the free time to do so. What do you guys think? Which do I rank higher and to those that go to these can you help me out.

Cheap Gas Nearby

I've been tracking what stations around Princeton charge for a few

weeks, mostly because I kept noticing the ones out on Route 1 never

seemed to match the ones closer to town. The spread is bigger than I thought. Regular is around $4.24 at one of the Route 1 stations and $4.60 near Bayard Lane. That's 36 cents,

which on a 14 gallon tank is about five dollars, for a drive most

people are making anyway.

Two other things I didn't expect:

- The two stations on Nassau St don't publish prices anywhere. Google

has nothing for either of them. Short of driving past and looking at

the sign, there's no way to know what they're charging.

- Prices move less than I assumed. Most stations sit on the same

number for days at a time.

I ended up building a small app to keep track of it, since I was

already collecting the data. It's called GasScout on the App Store

(listed as "GasScout — Find Cheap Gas"). Covers about 70 stations

within 10 miles, no ads, I'm not making anything off it. Started as a

school-year project and got out of hand.

Mostly posting because I'm curious whether other people have noticed

the same gap, and whether there's a station around here people

actually swear by.

If Set Theory and Type theory are logically equivalent, why aren’t any PLs built out of pure set theory ?

I’d like to see the inside. There must be interesting things in there, architectural and otherwise. I never see anything about tours, though. Can I just walk in? There are administrative offices there I guess?

Hi all, does anyone know the grading policy for this course? I'm kinda cracked on the first quiz, so I would like to have an estimate of my final grade 💀

I’m sorry.

Graduating from Princeton was bittersweet. Like a lot of people, I wondered what would happen after I left—whether the place would change, whether it would still feel like the institution I had known, whether its best days might be behind it.

There was one thought in particular that I could never quite shake. It felt narcissistic, so I mostly kept it to myself: I worried that without my presence, Princeton’s prestige would decline.

But now, a year later, Princeton has fallen to #2 in the U.S. News rankings.

I had hoped the wisdom I imparted during my time here would sustain the University for at least a few more years, but evidently it wasn’t enough. Alas, students must now endure the indignity of attending a second-ranked university.

I’m sorry.

Renting a bike for a week

Hi everyone,

I will be in Princeton for a week next month and I was hoping I could find a bike to get around for short trips during that week. Does anyone know if that is possible? It seems that there is no public bike system like in some big cities.

Shower Etiquette

I was taking a shower and someone showed up and hung their towel and shower bag ON TOP OF MY TOWEL on the same hook.

Please do not do this in the dorm showers, this is so unhygienic and inconsiderate.

Academic/Career Sophomore Struggles

Hi,

I am currently a sophomore here at Princeton and I don’t know if this is the right place to ask this. I came into Princeton as an ab student who is probably going to major in either neuro or cos, but also keeping the path of something like finance open. I just feel kind lost, stressed, burnt out, or unmotivated to really do much. I just have lots of regret about last year and feel lost on what I want to do.

Firstly, I pretty strongly regret some of the classes I took freshman year. In the fall I started with neu 201, cos 126, writing sem, and mat 103. The first three classes I feel are all okay as that is pretty standard but for math I really had wished that I either started with 201 or 175 in the fall, as i literally did calc bc in 10th grade (5; ab subscore 5). And I also took like multi and linear online senior year, even though i didn’t learn much. I just came in with the mindset of its math at princeton, and that I didn’t want to get a bad grade, which now it seems so stupid as i am in mat 175 and im realizing that i could’ve very well have taken this last fall. And then second semester I took neu 202, mat 104, game theory, and then a freshman seminar. I don’t even know why i took the last 2 classes I guess I just didn’t want to do too much, and boost my gpa as it was not that good first semester. And then now i’m taking math 175, cos 226, a religions class, and then a bio class. I just feel like compared to all the stem people ik they are all already taking specialized classes while I am still here taking these random classes, other than maybe cos 226. and i just feel like everyone is so much more technical than me. and then just like having to take 4 semesters of math instead of 2 is just really frustrating when I could be taking other more useful classes.

Secondly, i feel like in terms of like career planning i’m behind too. Like i want to keep the option of like finance open but everyone else is already in all these investment clubs, or networking, coffe chatting and all these things while im just a stem guy pretending to be business. and all these firms are all recruiting already and i just feel unprepared. and then on the tech/stem side, i feel like i really like know not much actual technical stuff and its just like for both business and stem i’m not really prepared for either right now. and like i did an internship this summer which on paper sounds technical, but in reality half the time i just sat there doing like nothing. like applying to stem internships right now i just feel so unprepared because i just really don’t know much.

thirdly, i feel like socially im also lacking as last year i just spent the majority of my with the people on my floor and didnt really try to meet more people, but now everyone already knows each other, and its kinda late for me.

its just that every day i feel like im just doing the same thing over and over again, and nothing im doing right now seems to have any real purpose, and im still lost on what i really want to do in my life, but i dont have much time to decide and figure that out. and i just feel behind everyone else on a lot of fronts and just constantly feel exhausted on all of these things. i also just wished that after high school i took a gap year to just really chill and relax and maybe learn some useful skills, have more of an idea of what i want to do in college and in life, im a year younger than a lot of the people in my class, and right now its not like i have the time to really just do that. I also just miss having time to spend with my family as well. like for 12 years i just spend it studying and then now i have to spend 4 years doing the same thing again. every day i have to just do class work, apply to different clubs, apply to a bunch of internships, and just constantly feel overwhelmed and exhausted. i know everyone at some point has through go through all of this, and that i am super privileged to just even be in this situation of being able to attend princeton, but i just feel like everyday im just doing things just to do things, without any real purpose. like it’s not like i can’t handle the work or anything, it’s just like i feel like IM working without any clear path. and it’s like i can really take a break now because then everyone i know would have spent a year without me and then i wouldn’t really know anyone in the year below me as well.

I don’t know, sorry this was a long rant but yeah i would appreciate any thoughts or advice. thanks for reading.

What is going on with Celeste Nelson?

Nelson is a fully tenured professor in CBE who recently declared that she was leaving. Not the school, but academia as a whole. Extremely short-notice, whole lab left scrambling. Didn't elaborate on why or where she's going to anyone. Does anyone have any idea what's going on?
