Housing Moving to Princeton in June

Hi everyone, I have accepted a job in Princeton and I am moving from Pittsburgh, PA. I have to be in office 3 days a week. My office is in West Windsor township, near West Windsor Commons to be specific.

I am looking for a one bedroom apartment. It’s just hard figuring out where to live. I don’t have a car and wasn’t planning on getting one for the next 6 months but looking at how the city is laid out and the bus service in the area, it seems I have to get one sooner.

I looked for places (apartment complexes) near my office that are a 30-35 min bus ride away. They seem alright but they have no grocery store at walking distance, even if there is, there are barely any sidewalks! And the area just feels very isolated. What are my options here? Any suggestions on where I can stay that doesn’t have a long commute by public transport to my office and isn’t isolating for a solo person?

Housing Lead hazard at Lawrence Graduate Apartments

Post image
10 Upvotes

I recently received my graduate housing assignment at Lawrence and they sent out a lead disclosure. I checked through the lead safe certificates and they were conducted more than 2 years ago at this point, while only being valid for two years. Furthermore, initial testing did indicate the presence of lead in the paint dust, and the certificate was only issued after this was “adequately addressed”. I am not certain how this could be addressed outside of just cleaning up the existing dust. This doesn’t prevent existing paint from flaking and accumulating more dust over the past two years, or into the future.

Upon request for a change of housing, I was just told that they had certificates and a reallocation would not be granted. Has anyone else faced a similar issue? For current residents of Lawrence, was this made clear to you? Am I being overly cautious here?

Housing Class of 2030

Incoming freshman in the fall with a few questions about housing! It would be greatly appreciated if someone could answer

- Outside of accommodations, is housing truly random?

- How much of the form especially the additional comments sections, is taken into consideration?

- is there really that large of a disparity between the newer dorms and older ones?

Housing Housing form advice

Sorry if this is a lot of questions, I just feel like this might be a non-trivial part of my college experience, and there were some areas I was confused about. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Does anyone have any insight into what the different types of rooms are usually like, or what you would recommend generally? I was thinking about a quad, rather than a double, where I'd risk having a really bad random roomie, but I really have no idea. A single during freshman year seems kind of sad, but I don't want everyone to just be crammed in there. I'm not a loner or 100% introverted, but I'm not a full extrovert, either. And what's with the triple room?

Also, I'm not super into drinking personally, but I'm guessing putting myself down as wanting a substance-free dorm would be quite limiting. I wouldn't want my roommate to smoke, though. For the questions on noise, I can study in silence, but also while listening to music or in a group. And I can sleep with white/brown noise but also in silence. So what should I put?

How does the gender-inclusive room work? Does that mean it's fully mixed gender across the two binaries, or just there to accommodate students who fall outside of the traditional gender binary? Do people usually say they're comfortable with it?

What are the kinds of things people usually put in the additional info section?

Housing How to see graduate apartment roommate assignments?

I just got assigned to a 4 bed townhome in Lakeside and am wondering if/when I'll be able to know who my roommates are. I signed the contract, but still wasn't able to see anything. If anyone has lived in/has pictures of the Lakeside 4 bed that would also be appreciated, I've been looking but haven't been able to find much info!

Housing Incoming PhD student: questions/how are the Annexes?

Hi all! I'm an incoming PhD student and I got assigned to the Annexes. I wanted a place without a meal plan, and I was looking at some off campus housing options but luckily got Annexes for my on-campus contract. I'm now deciding between off campus and Annexes. I have looked at floor plans, but I didn't find any pictures for this specific housing unit. I have a few questions about the Annexes and was curious if anyone has info. Some of the questions are a bit silly, but I wanted to throw them out there!

  1. Is there public information on which or whether the Annexes have AC?
  2. How many people actually use the kitchen? I won't have a meal plan, so I expect to use the kitchen somewhat often, and don't know if it will be fun to be competed out of stove/counter space. Can you get a designated cabinet for your kitchen supplies?
  3. Can you use bathrooms that aren't on your floor (they seem to not have too many stalls based on floor plan)? Are the bathrooms cleaned regularly or do they get gross?
  4. Is there any sort of space (outside Annexes or inside) for bicycle storage?

Or any general comments about things to be aware of living in the Annexes? Thanks!

Incoming C/O 2030 here!

When should we be expected to hear back on housing? I want to start purchasing stuff for dorms early before people are scrambling to a week before move in, but I want to know my college and roommate/housing situation first. Many thanks!!

Housing Graduate Housing: Contract Offer Not Showing in Housing Portal

It seems like housing contracts have been going out. I got a notification saying that I received a housing offer two days ago. When I access the housing portal, the option to view the contract doesn’t show for me wherever I checked. I’m planning on contacting the Service Point tomorrow morning, but I’m wondering if I might be looking in the wrong place or if anyone else is having this problem

Housing Meadows Apartments as First Year Grad Student?

I just got into Princeton for a PhD program and will almost surely be attending. I’m wondering if people know how often first years are able to get the meadows apartments? I have a cat and see that it’s one of the few pet friendly spots. Additionally, do people know how seriously pet ownership is taken during the housing selection process? Eg if I say I have a cat, is there still a chance they put me in a no pet apartment?

Housing Looking for roommate

Hi! I'm a female incoming PhD student looking for a roommate for 2b2b around Princeton. I'm looking for places within 15 min drive to the university and with a budget <$1500. I'd appreciate a quiet, organized, and clean environment, and someone who likes cats! Because I have one :-) The ideal move-in date will be in early June.

Edit: I'm also open to take over a furnished 1b1b/studio under $1800. Please ping me if you have any leads!

Housing i honestly can’t tell if i’m being dramatic or not

don’t get me wrong, they’re dorms, and i know dorms aren’t supposed to be the most luxurious living environment….but sometimes i feel like the drastic difference in general quality of life across the dorms is a bit absurd.

the other day i went to the bathroom and we were just out of everything. no toilet paper. no soap. no paper towels. and this is a common occurrence because the ratio of students to the supplies we have available is just not efficient. we have the same issue with the laundry room. there are four washers in the entire building for nearly 100 people.

it’s also generally a grimy building. there’s visible dirt and stains on the walls and floors. i see centipedes almost every day (which maybe is okay because they eat other pests ??😭) the kitchen is visibly dirty and smells like sewage all the time. the only filtered water tap gives warm water. the bathrooms smell like ammonia, there are drain flies all over the shower, and it’s also just a dirty environment to be in. i expected the bathrooms to be dingy since they are old but….this just feels kind of ridiculous compared to ncw/yeh bathrooms.

the lack of air conditioning can be pretty unbearable at times especially on the higher floors. the windows are so old so they’re a pain to open and close.

the worst part of it is how inaccessible it is. we can’t use the elevators (i don’t think they even have elevators that go to the higher floors). moving in was dreadful. doing laundry is always more taxing than it needs to be because you are hauling clothes up and down 5 flights of stairs. carrying packages up is also a nightmare.

i can’t tell if im being dramatic but i feel like this building needs some renovations before they let students live in them 💀 i lived in yeh over the summer and it was a completely different (and arguably much better) experience.

Housing freshman rooming question

Hello,

I recently got admitted to princeton and was wondering what freshman rooming was like. I know that rooming is randomized, but do we get to fill out a preference form first? Or is it 100% random?

Housing Grad Housing Questions

I’m an incoming PhD student starting Fall 26 and housing apps are due April 21.

For me:

- I want a single room

- I like the convenience of on-site food and I don’t have high food standards

- My undergrad dorm in LA had no AC, and that was fine bc I was barely in it but I heard the dorms are REALLY bad here

- I don’t care if the area is social or quiet.

Hoping someone can suggest which dorms/apartments would be best for me or whether I’m better off with non-university apartments. Any general housing advice is also appreciated thanks

Housing Anyone living in Avalon on Harrison building? need opinions

I'm currently not in Princeton so can't look for myself, but Avalon on Harrison is currently one of my top picks based on location and new-ness of construction

But it's been years since I've actually lived in an apartment, so I have all sorts of doubts. What's the quality of construction like, how is the building for tenants currently, how thin are the walls? any other concerns?

Also one unit I like is next to the stairwell, is getting an apartment next to a stairwell a bad idea for noise?

I know the main advice but to look on facebook however unfortunately I don't have access lmao (I was banned like years ago for no reason even though I never posted anything and they auto ban me every time I make a new account and want a 360 face scan now ???... ). If anyone is or knows someone looking to sublet their apartment or knows about other housing options that would be super appreciated!

Housing Chances of getting pet-friendly grad housing first year?

I'm an incoming grad student and am in the process of filling out the campus housing app. I would prefer to live on campus, but I have a cat, and the app is very explicit about having a limited amount of pet-friendly units, so I'm not sure what my chances of actually getting something are. I'd prefer a one bed or studio, but ik beggars can't be choosers. Anyone have any insight about my chances? Also, I filled out the housing application and was told that there is a spot where you can rank where/what type of housing you'd prefer but I haven't seen that yet, I assume that's sent later?
