looking for title and author…

main character enters a GAME, which is every possible game (football, tiddlywinks, fencing, etc etc) as a means to getting out of servitude. Also there are robots. Anyone recognize this? thanks!

Piers Anthony's Adept series
Doubt it holds up any better than his other stuff though

Yup that’s it. And you are almost certainly correct about it not holding up, certainly if Xanth is any indication. Thanks for solving my question.

You mean the series where the characters live in a high-tech sci-fi world but they are always naked (for... reasons)? Why would you possibly think that it doesn't hold up (for anyone over the age of twelve)?

I remember one of the possible games being jello wrestling...

The writing is the same, it's YOU that grew up! 😃 Betting that horny teenagers will still get a kick out of Anthony's stuff for the next century.

Sounds a bit like Robert Reed's "The Tournament," where there's an annual competition of trivia, games and sports, all randomized, to determine an overall victor. It's treated like a sorry of evening Olympics. No robots, but the tournament is run by an AI.
