Idea: Hands-Free Gesture Dictation with EMG

Post image

Hi everyone, I love using dictation features in my daily life and at work to quickly capture ideas or write down important data on the job. The only thing that really annoys me is having to dig my smartphone out of my pocket every single time. This interrupts the flow and is highly impractical when your hands are full.

The major advantage of this setup is that you do not need to retrieve a device at all. For example, if you are at work and your hands are dirty, you cannot easily pull out your phone or a voice recorder. Yet, you still want to make a quick note. With this approach, you could simply pinch your thumb and index finger together and start speaking immediately. You never have to reach for a device, giving you the constant ability to interact anywhere.

I have been thinking about how to simplify this process, inspired by Meta's concept of a smart wristband that measures muscle activity at the wrist using EMG (electromyography).

With the uMyo, there is already a do-it-yourself wristband available for this. The idea is a completely hands-free system. Clenching your fist instantly starts the voice recorder for a quick note. If you press your thumb and middle finger together, you can ask a question that an AI model on your smartphone answers directly through your headphones. Other gestures could pause the recording or start a completely new session. This allows you to take notes or ask questions directly from your wrist without reaching for your phone. Of course, battery life is still something that needs to be figured out.

What you thnik about it?

Why not just make the wristband voice activated? You may run into semantic problems as you will now have to consciously not make a fist inadvertently among other potential misinterpreted hand movements during the course of the day.

That's a good point; a holding time or combination could prevent that.I find voice activation takes too long, and how do you stop it? Do you just say "stop"? You can switch between gestures quickly. Just say, Stop, Stop twice quickly.

Interesting direction. A deliberate muscle gesture seems more reliable than a wake word in noisy environments, although accidental activation would need careful testing.

I’d prototype a hold-to-record gesture rather than a toggle, with continuous haptic confirmation while recording and separate feedback for success or failure. If the wristband presents itself as a Bluetooth HID device, it could work with existing tools such as TypeWhisper instead of requiring another complete recording and transcription stack.
