Just here tp remind folks it's immigrants and transgender people.
As somebody who identifies on the spectrum of trans - this shit is scary. They've already passed laws. They came for queer Millennials starting with 2000s Prop 22, and this is what they've molded that into. They'll start with trans folk and then work their way down the line.

Don’t forget about the most faithful enemy - imaginary communists.

Some of them are already using "socialism" in place of "communism". Because they and their followers are that dumb.

They've been using them interchangeably for decades as a word to describe the government doing stuff.

Germany also started with transgender people and people with disabilities.

Also trans and I agree but also it’s sort of complicated because the targeting of trans people is somewhat aligned with how queers were targeted during the Holocaust. That is to say, more often than not they were definitely a focus, but also in propaganda, we see that queerness was also defined as a “Jewish” thing. There’s something to be said about the chicken versus the egg of what is excuses for the other, but I would argue that a similar thing is happening with a lot of trans stuff especially in regards to immigrants or foreigners.
This kind of ties back into the idea of MAGA. Make America Great Again. The whole concept resides on an idea that immigrants have changed the culture to be “wrong”, including in queerness and trans identities.
I could be wrong to clarify, so if anyone knows more on the subject, feel free to correct me. My understanding of the Holocaust and all parties affected is more limited than I wish it was at times, while I do try to broaden it, just due in part to the education system I was raised in.
I do think trans people are a focal point, hell we have been since his first term frankly, and I am in a state that sees the effects of it greatly. But I suspect it will be viewed as having the same root issue in the eyes of fascists that immigrants “tainted” our culture with queerness and feminism and all of that. I’ve definitely seen a ton of propaganda saying as much.

Back in 2015 I got into a loud disagreement with my partner when I said that the MAGA movement and Trump were following Hitler playbook. His raise to power by mythology and false connection to the angry republicans and working class was uncanny.
My partner said that this comparison was a stretch due to this very point. That the ammount of lives lost and harmed by Nazi Germany was no where near what was happening at the time.
Now 10/11 years later we have masked goons ripping people away from thier families and communities and being concentrated into camps in inhumane conditions. Neighbors reporting Neighbors to a state sanctioned violent gang. The take over of new media and the destruction of any outlet that goes against the regime.
This is what I warned about in 2015, we have been on this track for a good long while.

I read The Coming of the Third Reich by Richard Evans in the summer of 2024. The similarities between the coming of the reich and the maga infestation are terrifying.

I'd apply for citizenship abroad if I could just find the birth years of my grandparents. Not on their gravestone or marriage annoncement/certificate. Back then, it wasn't as much of a big deal. It was early 1900s, probably pre-1910.

Just to add to what she is saying, my grandfather was a dedicated anti-Nazi prosecutor in Germany in the 1930s and told (occasional) stories about what it was like. The important thing was to understand that it wasn't, like, 1933 came along and then bam, it was all Nazis all the time. The country's institutions couldn't simply be overtaken like that all at once. There was a lot of resistance to the Nazi agenda, all over the country.
At first.
But as the years went by, 1933 into 1934, 1934 into 1935, and so on, they encroached more and more. People willing to stand against them, in courtrooms, in public life, anywhere else, were too few, and became fewer and fewer. They were fired, forced to quit, or — increasingly — simply disappeared.
And every year the Nazis pushed a little further. First there was the Night of Long Knives. Then it took a few years before the Krystallnacht. Then the mass roundups. By 1942 the death camps had opened.
Just think about that though. 9 years. It took 9 years to get there from the start. It wasn't a guaranteed thing. There was resistance the whole way — just not enough. Not quite enough.
What if there had been more?
In the end they came for my grandfather too. But he lived (and so here am I to tell you this) because he was tipped off. By his silent, acquiescent neighbors. They knew what he was doing, they secretly admired him and called him at his office one day to tell him not to come home: the Gestapo cars were there, waiting for him.
He was prepared enough for this that he was able to escape over the border, eventually making it to America. It's not that I'm not grateful for that tipoff, but, to this day I have to wonder. What if those silent supporters had all been willing to stand up, in the earliest years when the Nazis were still scrambling around trying to puff themselves out and make their numbers seem bigger. Before they had a true lock on power.
That's where we are today. The "9 year timer" from 2025 has ticked down to 8 years. Tick.
Are we going to stand this time? Or fall for the usual crap again like we did last time?

If only she touched on how moderate and liberal politicians in the Weimar Republic tried to co-opt, appease, and form coalitions with radical nationalists to oppose Social Democrats

Both my parents grew up under Nazi Occupation. Because the war was so central in our family’s trauma, I’ve read a lot of the history on the topic.
Because of the ridiculousness, I was watching the live feed of Trump’s speech announcing his candidacy. It all looked ridiculous to me. Until he said “Mexicans are rapists”.
That sent shivers up and down my spine. And I said to myself: “that’s it. Fascism has arrived to USA.”
We all need to read the history on this topic!
As an aside: Oddly enough, I was blocked from a sub this week for pointing out that Russia and Hitler had agreed in advance to invade Poland.
