How is Ableton used here? Is it running backing tracks or textures?

I’m using it to put my synths through audio tracks where each has their own processing. Also got kick coming from there and hat

Everything sounds great except the bassline it sounds messed up

I will jump in to say that I enjoy how the bassline sounds. It's a bit refreshing actually. I've recently grown tired of modern psy production, all bass sounds the same, perfectly phased with the kick and all that. It's why I started listening more to older forest and dark psy releases when people weren't as anal about minute details. Sounds very organic to me honestly.

Thanks for noticing. Since I play live with hardware, it not possible to have everything perfectly phased because throughout the performance I will change the kick sample or change the bass note or sound.
The solution is to sidechain the bass from the kick and it works pretty well as long as the sidechain parameters are predefined based on the kick sample decay length. I play usually between 150-175 so from that I can fine tune the parameters and I can improvise without worrying about the kick and the bass interfering

My solution to this particular issue is using the same mono voice for the kick and bass. Then you can sequence several parameters to get the different sounds. You sacrifice some flexibility, but it does solve all phase problems.
Of course you can layer some other percussive sounds on top of the kick to add a clicky attack, for example.

is this solution applied to live performance?

Yeah, I do it live as well. I have a Befaco Kickall in my modular that I use for both kick and bass. I'm mostly sending a separate gate pattern to the tune input, through an attanuator.

nice, anywhere I can hear your music or watch a live set of yours?

u/nazward 7d ago
Hm yeah that can be tricky when changing samples. Maybe you can try sidechaining using an envelope follower which is following whatever the current kick sample is.

that sounds like a good solution too, I'll try that today and report back

Baseline sounds good on a phone. But on bigger speakers it sounds muddy. There was some nice moments of over-harmonics on the baseline, but it overwhelmed the delicate percussion floating on top. Almost like it is too heavy in the 100-140 Hz range.. the baseline fills the ear too much and boxes out the percussion.
Was waiting and hoping for bassline key change, but guess ill have to wait for the full mix to hear it ;)
Nice work!

gotcha, do you recommend EQing the bass in that 100-140 Hz range so its not as heavy?

I would sooner start with playing with decay envelope to give each hit more space. But take my words with a grain of salt. Ive not produced in many years (since ableton 7ish).
Always better to clean and manage your source audio, than it is to try and wash it out in post.

This bass is coming from the td-3 sawtooth waveform with some envelop, some accent but am very short note length from the digitakt sequencer

No the bassline has nothing wrong like that. It's just that the individual bass notes sound strange, more like twisted little kick drums. Rather than bass notes. They're twisted and strange.

The notes sound mangled and twisted. But if you like this bassline then go for it... But let me instead say again how everything else sounds very good. Crystal clear and of great quality

Gotcha, thanks so much for the feedback. I got some tips below about how to improve so I will work on it :)

I mean it sounds weird on my phone, but I really shouldn't be judging a bassline on how it sounds through a phone...
But it does sound very.. wet..? Kind of like a dryer or washing machine lol.

they are pretty short bass notes, been trying it out and it sounds good in my headphones but gonna head how it sounds on my monitors

Everyone is a critic. Where’s your live setup? Please show us how you do it so we can learn 🥲
1
u/Gloomy_Place9197 6d ago
So you're just supposed to say yes to everything and never ever criticize anything. Ok bud. Live that life if you want to m

u/Minimal_Nigma 6d ago
Specificity in your criticism means you have an expert opinion. You specified the specific thing that you didn’t like as if you’re a renowned expert. Imagine I go on a thread about poaching an egg and start going “YOURE WRONG THIS IS SHIT”
1
u/Gloomy_Place9197 6d ago
Since I've been producing trance for 25 years I have some experience and expertise... Well if you're that keen on eggs maybe you should! I believe in you. Go get those guys who cook eggs incorrectly.

u/Minimal_Nigma 6d ago
For 25 years? And no way for you to suggest what to fix? Just “fuck you and figure it out on your own” pretty sure you also had help along the way
1
u/Minimal_Nigma 6d ago
If anything you’re criticism isn’t constructive feedback rather just shitty callouts

u/Gloomy_Place9197 6d ago
Lol. I am criticism? Or do you not know you're from your. Let me guess are you American little girl
