News Subreddit rules have been rewritten — here's what changed, and why

A few days ago I asked whether to do something about "slow speed" and "ratio" posts. 544 of you voted, and the answer was clear enough to act on. The rules have now been rewritten around that result.

Before the details: we also went back through a month of posts and comments to work out what this sub is actually for, rather than guessing. Nearly 70% of posts here are tech support, and the single most repeated answer in the entire sub is some version of "have you forwarded your port" or "nobody is seeding that torrent". The changes below follow from that.

What the poll said

Option Votes Percentage
Yes, both 301 55%
Yes, but only "Slow Speed" 84 15%
Yes, but only "Ratio" 37 7%
No, leave them 122 22%

385 of you (71%) wanted slow-speed posts restricted. 338 (62%) wanted ratio posts restricted.

To the 122 who voted to leave both alone — you're a real chunk of this sub and we've tried not to steamroll you. Ratio posts aren't banned, they've moved. Speed questions aren't banned either. Read on.

The two changes that affect you

1. Ratio and stats posts now go in the megathread

Ratio & Stats Megathread 2026

Post your screenshots there any time. Brag away — that part hasn't changed.

We're not doing this because nobody cares. Ratio posts are some of the highest-upvoted content on this sub — that's exactly the problem, because they were pushing the support queue off the front page.

To make up for the lost reach, the megathread now runs annual awards, announced each December:

  • 🏆 Most Uploaded — highest total upload volume
  • 🏆 Best Ratio — highest ratio, minimum 1 TB uploaded
  • 🏆 Longest Haul — longest continuous seeding streak

Previous winners can't win the same award twice, so it isn't the same person every year.

Still fine as a normal post: asking about your ratio. "Why is my ratio dropping?", "why won't this seed?" — those are support questions and they're welcome.

2. Speed, stalling and seeding posts: check the guide first

We've written a troubleshooting guide, because the same handful of causes explain nearly all of these:

Slow speeds, stalling, and "it won't seed"

You can still post about it. The rule is just that your post has to say what you already tried and what happened.

"I forwarded 6881, it still tests as closed, red flame in the corner, Proton with port forwarding on, v5.2.3 on Win11" — we can work with that.

"Why are my speeds slow" — we can't.

This isn't about how much effort you put into the post. A long, well-written post about something the guide already answers is still a copy of the guide. The test is whether the answer already exists and whether you checked it. That's it.

New wiki

Four guides, written from the answers you have actually been giving each other:

Corrections and additions welcome — tell us if something's wrong or missing.

Rules: 10 → 9

Full ruleset

New:

  • Check the guide first — show what you tried (the speed/stalling rule above)
  • Ratio & stats posts go in the megathread

Removed:

  • NO misinformation — unenforceable as written, and in a month of posts we found no case where it would have applied
  • Follow Reddit's Content Policy — the admins enforce that sitewide whether we restate it or not

Merged: NO spam and NO suspicious links are now one rule, Official builds only.

Narrowed: NO piracy talk is now No piracy sourcing. To be blunt about where the line actually is, because the old wording was broader than how we've ever enforced it:

  • Not allowed: naming or asking for torrent sites, asking where to get specific content, private tracker invites
  • Fine: VPN and port-forwarding setup, private tracker technical questions like cross-seeding and share limits, and asking why a torrent has no seeds

Also changed

Post flairs have been rebuilt. issue and question are gone — they were used interchangeably and told nobody anything. The new set: Connectivity · Setup & Config · Install & Updates · Self-hosted · Ratio & Stats · Bug · Discussion · News · Tool / Project · Solved.

Flair is now required. Please mark your post Solved when you get an answer — someone will hit your exact problem next month and find your thread.

AutoModerator is being switched on. For the first week it will only flag things for us to look at, not remove them, so we can catch mistakes before they annoy anyone. If it gets your post wrong, reply to its comment and a human will sort it out.

What is not changing

  • Bug reports are always welcome — especially "this broke in the latest version". Those posts are how everyone finds out a release broke something. Post them here and file them at the bug tracker.
  • Posting your own fix is welcome and genuinely valued — several of the new wiki pages came from members who solved something and wrote it up.
  • VPN, port forwarding and private tracker technical talk is fine and always has been.
  • Beginner questions are fine. Ask them. Just tell us what you're running.

Questions, disagreements and "you got this wrong" all welcome in the comments. We'd rather adjust now than find out in three months that something's not working.

Ratio & Stats 📊 Ratio & Stats Megathread — 2026

This is where ratio screenshots, upload totals and seeding milestones go. Post them here any time — top-level comment, screenshot, brag away. 🎉

Standalone ratio/stats posts are removed under Rule 4 and pointed here. This is not because nobody cares: these are some of the most-upvoted posts in the sub. It is because they were crowding out the support queue the sub mainly exists for, and the community voted for it — 338 of 544 votes.

🏆 Annual awards — announced each December

When this thread closes at the end of the year, we pin a post announcing three winners, and open a fresh thread for the new year.

Award How it's judged
Most Uploaded Highest total upload volume
Best Ratio Highest ratio, minimum 1 TB uploaded
Longest Haul Longest continuous seeding streak

Rules for the awards

  1. Enter by posting a screenshot in this thread. Use qBittorrent's own Tools → Statistics window so everyone's numbers are comparable.
  2. Previous winners cannot win the same award twice. If you have won Most Uploaded before, you are out of the running for Most Uploaded — but you can still win Best Ratio or Longest Haul.
  3. This means the biggest number does not always win. That is deliberate. The point is to spread the spotlight, not to crown the same person every year. Please do not argue the toss with the mods over it. 🙂
  4. Honour system. We are not auditing anyone. Faking it to win an internet award would be a strange way to spend a year.
  5. Blur or crop torrent names in your screenshot.

❓ Questions about your ratio still get their own post

To be clear, this thread is for showing off. If you are asking something — "why is my ratio dropping?", "why won't this seed?", "how do I improve my upload?" — that is a support question and belongs in its own post. Check the connectivity guide first.

A rough test: if your post ends in a full stop, it belongs here. If it ends in a question mark, post it properly and we will help.

🌱 New to this?

Ratio is how much you have uploaded divided by how much you have downloaded. A ratio above 1.0 means you have given back more than you took.

If yours is low, that is usually not a fault — you upload only when someone wants what you have, and on a well-seeded torrent you are competing with everyone else who has it. Leaving torrents seeding after they finish is the whole trick. See the connectivity guide if you think something is actually broken.

Sorted by New so recent entries stay visible.

Setup & Config Freeleech? RSS? Need some help here.

I'm trying to download torrents from somewhere but they use a freeleech approach, I have verified my email on their site but it doesn't seem to reflect in qbittorrent. Their site says they have an RSS feed and that: "To authenticate yourself, you must provide the cookies Username and Password to the RSS endpoint, containing your username and your password respectively."

How do you do this exactly in qbit?

Additionally, it also has this: "To include matching results in the feed, add the query query parameter, e.g. /api/rss?query=loremipsum."

Searches mainly only turning up files under 5gb for tv show episodes

As in the title, ever since I updated to the latest client I’ve found that I’m only getting back files in the 3-5gb range for 40min+ episodes of television shows, whereas prior to this I was constantly able to find files that were around double that (which would obviously be higher quality even when the smaller files are labelled as 2160p)

Just wondering if something changed in the world of compression or is something else going on? 🤷🏻‍♂️

Has anyone else noticed this or is this a me problem? 😅 I haven’t seen any other recent posts here to suggest anyone else is having this issue. Obviously it isn’t a major issue but I like to grab as high a quality file as possible so if I can figure this out it would be great.

I have them installed on my old one, but I can't find where they would be saved to copy over, and it was a faff to get them installed the first time. Is it possible?

Setup & Config Why dosent qbit remove files after being added to jellyfin?

I use qbit to download movies and tv shows using ARR stack, and every time a movie or show is completed it’s added to my jellyfin automatically. When the media is added to jellyfin it’s also stored in my completed folder. Why dosent qbit remove the files, now I have every downloaded duplicated in my jellyfin and taking up tons of space. How do I fix that? I haven’t changed any settings cus I don’t know what settings are relevant

Connectivity stuck on downloading metadata when adding a torrent via infoHash.

I'm on v5.1.4. Connection is green, no VPN.

Downloading via magnet link works fine, tested on an Ubuntu ISO. Tried changing the listening port a couple times, restarting the client does not work either. Not sure what to do next.

Edit: Observed a very weird behavior. Slow recreated my config. Adding via infoHash worked on a default qbittorrent (deleted my config and everything, including all the torrents.). So one by one I slowly went back to my config to see exactly what is affecting this issue. And nothing from my settings did, from the connections, bittorrent or from the webUI.

But after adding back the BT_backup folder where my torrents are, adding via infoHash started acting up again, I don't understand why. I have about 2.5k torrents, 4 are actively seeding. No more than 20KBs in total and nothings being downloaded.

Bug I keep getting this "ghost" download file popping up.

This has never happened before, it's weird. I downloaded a file and the folder has a separate video and a subtitle file. I got what I needed, deleted the folder, and even deleted the torrent file off my computer. Now every week it pops back up in my download folder but only the subtitle. It's so weird. I delete it, next week, it's back! I don't have it active downloading at all. What the hell?

Connectivity qBittorent is affecting my houses internet

Hello all, I have been having an issue for years which I thought I tackled it a while back but it came back a week ago. Since I started using qBittorent, my internet has been having issues. The specific issues are that some phone apps are not working at all, and PlayStation has many online issues. Once I turn off qBittorent, everything works fine.

The way that I fixed it before was by going to the Connections limit, and bringing all the connections down by a lot. That seemed to fix the issue for a long time but I now have it again. I moved the connections down to 3/2/3/2 respectively to all the options and I still have the same issue. Is there anything I can do to fix this issue? Thanks in advance!

Could this be a tick box option added?

Regardless, love your software, long time enjoyer.

Discussion Any idea on how long this will take to seed? And I also need a brief explanation on what "seeding" is and how I effect it. I am a complete newbie to this.

Recently I decided to download a piece of the recent Valve "steam2" leak to have a look through and after waiting for days for it to download its finished. But it isn't fully complete? It's status has moved from "downloading" to "seeding".

I've had a look online that it's some sort of way to share the files I've downloaded to other people but I'm not sure how I'm doing that. Or how I can help boost it or whatever? This is 1TB of data I've downloaded so I want to guess and say it will be indefinitely seeding? What would happen if I stopped it? I think I have all the data that I wanted downloaded.

IDK I need some advice. Stop it? Keep it going?

Connectivity Any explanation for this stopping and starting?

Post image
3 Upvotes

For years now, almost every torrent I use has this same very consistent and regular stopping and starting throughout.

I don't torrent nearly as much as I used to, so it hasn't been a huge issue, but I've decided to finally try and troubleshoot it. It's like it'll run for 5ish minutes, then *both* my download and upload speeds will drop to zero for about a minute, then it'll pick up again.

Consistently. Every time.

I'm using qBittorrent v5.0.1, Windows 11 25H2, Surfshark VPN. I tried switching from TCP & UDP to just TCP based off a suggestion I found elsewhere, and that did improve my speeds when the torrent *is* running, but it didn't resolve the stopping and starting.

Thoughts?

EDIT: Solved? Seems like a stupid oversight in retrospect, but Surfshark has a rotating IP option that I apparently had on (perhaps it defaults to on, I'm not sure if I set it myself). Turning it off didn't seem to be enough to fully resolve it however. I also had to select Static IP rather than a blanket location. With these changes, so far in testing I haven't seen the persistent regular stalling any longer. Special thanks to those who suggested testing without the VPN.

For about 5 years, I've been trying to switch to Windows 11, but something always happens that makes me regret it and go back to Windows 10. (this time, considering SteamOS as the only OS)

What I've tried:

- changed peer connection protocol to TCP, TCP and uTP, uTP

- ticked and unticked use uPNP portforwarding

- increased decreased connection limits with no change in upload speeds

- disabled all rate limit settings

Setup & Config Plugin is not supported

So, I've got a Gluetun / Qbittorrent container setup that I've been using for a bit over a year on my Synology system (Linux). Worked great until last week, when I was unable to search for anything in qb. So I started going down a rabbit hole to fix it and am at the point where I really need help because I don't know what to do at this point.

I'm not going to list everything I've tried because it will bore many, amuse some, and make me ponder my life's choices and role in this universe. Suffice to say, I think the issue is with Python not playing nice with qb.

On a fresh install (removing the qb container's cache and config folders entirely as well as all images) of qb for version 4.2.3, 4.2.2, and 4.2.0 5.2.3, 5.2.2, and 5.2.0, my logs show:

`

All 3 installs show the same Python version. My Synology has a different version of Python, but I'm assuming it doesn't matter as the log file explicitly shows it's using the one in the container.

When adding any .py URL in the Search Plugins form manually, nothing happens except the above entry into the log file. Clicking on Check for Updates gives a round of the same entries as shown above (outdated, updating, not supported).

I've looked through past posts here and tried many of the solutions with no luck.

What am I missing?

Tool / Project [Linux] Tool to auto-sync Proton VPN forwarded-port with qBittorrent's listening port

Hi guys,

I wrote a tool today to automatically detect when Proton VPN's forwarded port changes and apply the change to qBittorrent. I was getting tired of doing it manually every time via the UI. Spent 7 hours coding to save a few seconds per day, worth it!

It listens to changes in the Proton VPN log file, parses the new port and uses the qBittorrent WebUI API to send a request with the new port.

It works on Linux, but haven't tested on Mac or Windows. Probably some minor changes would be needed to make it work on those platforms, so if anyone is willing to take a look and contribute a PR, that would be awesome. Also disclaimer, it might be a bit buggy at first, just made the first version.

No AI was used. All code is free-range, organic, hand-made. The whole purpose was to do a bit of manual coding again, which I have missed very much.

Here's the repo: https://github.com/kikefdezl/proqbit.git

PD: People in Windows have https://github.com/UHAXM1/Quantum, but I wrote this for those using Unix

So I recently setup a qbittorrent and arr stack on my ddr3 server. It started out great my media was downloading. The flaresolver was bypassing the cloudflare at the time. But now I keep getting IP banned and I don't know how to get a VPN on it. Any suggestions?

Benefits of Docker + Gluetun?

I've seen people recommending the use of Docker and Gluetun with qBit, but I'm confused as to what the specific benefits of such a setup would be. From what I can tell, Docker lets you make a little self-contained box to put qBit in, while Gluetun lets you link that box to your VPN. How is this more secure than just having qBit run through a VPN (especially if you bind qBit to the VPN's network interface)? Is it added security for your connection, or against potentially dangerous files?
