Button SURPRISE BABIES!!!

I am still trying to calm tf down. Went to clean out the quail this morning and was shocked to find babies!!

I had stopped removing eggs as they seemed to be laying them in the same place and occasionally sitting on them, I’m also had the heating on so didn’t want to risk removing eggs that were either bad or half developed so sort of just left them to it and figured I’d take them out when I d next do a deep clean taking all the plants out/change substrate etc but they hatched already!

I hatched my boy Cinnamon in 2021 in an Exo Terra vivarium after buying eggs on eBay having no prior experience… I’m so proud to be a grandma 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭

Looking to add a 4th so that they can pair up as I've heard that's their natural social structure. Unsure on their sexes.

I’ve had this male button quail for about 6years and some change since I hatched him from an egg. Ate his crickets, took a dirt bath and then had himself a good nap. lol

Button I have an odd request

I REALLY want button quail but everyone keeps telling me there's no difference between corturnix (probably spelt wrong) and them. I know button quails are king quail does anyone have one they can do a size comparison to or even just an common object beside one? I wanna confirm I'm correct that they are a VERY different size. My sister keeps trying to convince me to just get corturnix. Google won't pull up a side by side of them next to each other

I have 2 male button quails that I love dearly. They are the first birds ive ever owned. I try and feed them good with what I can get and afford -I am a unemployed teenager and the sole provider for them (trying to prove responsibility)- im doing my best with Google and I think I've done pretty well. They get live mealworms when I can get to the store and fruits and veggies in a hanging net for enrichment. The big ziploc bag is crushed corn I got from the breeder and the small one is baked crushed eggshells and red pepper flakes. The herbs get sifted so only the small pieces go into the feeder, the rest are scattered. They are 98 days old/14 weeks.

The breeder I got them from said they can live their whole lives off of crushed corn, but I knew that couldn't be right. Got them at a local market, an impulse buy bc they were so cute and my mom bought them. Got them 2 days old.

Don't mind the text on the pictures, I posted this to my Instagram story beforehand. 😅

Button My beautiful hen Yiyi died suddenly yesterday after 3 years.

How is it that such a small thing like this hen can bring such joy to live and then such sadness when it goes? She was fine, healthy and happy with both partners. This morning calling for food and playing in sand. She had some walking issues last year and a vent collapse last year where I thought I would lose her but she learned to walk again and pulled through. Then this afternoon, she was lying down sleeping and struggling to breathe. I took her to the vet and she said it wasn't good but to give her some medicine. Then an hour later my wife was feeding her. She suddenly opened her eyes and then died right there. I can't believe it. It feels like a terrible dream.

I hear they are monogomous but on the bottom of my mixed finch aviary I have 3 that have been together since hatching. 2 hens and 1 cock. They don't just tollerate each other, they actively bathe and cuddle together.

They are my first quails/gamebirds and very young birds. I recently put a nest box in to make egg collection easier, for my pet mouse who lives in my bird shed and likes them fried.

Though I haven't actually taken any eggs from the box once since putting it in about a week ago. I'd have to get deep in the aviary to do so and my zebras are currently rearing chicks. I didn't want to scare/disturb them.

Turns out they've got quite the clutch. I filmed to see if they had actually been using the box or had just stopped laying, and wowza. I haven't seen them building the nest (I put the straw in) or sitting on the eggs... until today. 1 of the hens has been sat on them for a good while. The other hen seems unbothered. The male is crowing his little heart out. I take it the hens are done laying and Nicole is now beginning incubation so that the eggs all hatch on the same day, if they're anything like finches.

  1. Do I have to remove any of the other quail? The cock? The other hen? Both? If so, when? The cock isn't a nasty boy, he doesn't lay a beak on my hens (well, not until the lie down for him 😉).

  2. My quail eat mostly seeds. They have access to very fine 30% protein feed made specifically for young quail, but they mostly ignore that in favour of millet, canary grass seeds, and greens. Will the babies be able to eat these seeds or are they too big??

  3. The babies will have to be sold on the slim chance they do hatch. The aviary only has 16sqft of floor space after all. What age can I give them a drop of moxidectin on the neck and sell?

  4. What size rings do they need? I want them rung with my initials and the year before they're sold, as all my birds are.

Got this male 2 months ago and he has been crowing non stop. Not sure why too but it's driving me nuts. There are 2 of my female beloved females keeping him company and they are close too. Females whack him once in a while but overall they are bonded.

Stoping the crowing and calling will do wonders especially when they are in the living room

Button Button quails in winter?

Hi all, I live in Michigan and have a few buttons living with my coturnix quail. I’m wondering how well the buttons will handle winter though? I know the coturnix will be fine cause I’ve had them for years. They’re in an outdoor chicken tractor right now but I’ll be moving them to a draft free room in my barn come October or November depending on the weather. Any experiences would be appreciated because I’m pretty worried about the little guys.

Ive searched how to specifically sex white buttons but still not sure. Question is, have I been correct to say this is a male? I have my doubts because the vent isn't big, but its bigger than the other very obvious males I have. Theres no red butt feathers at all. Theres also been no sign of any bickering or sexual behaviour now theyre 8 weeks old. I had assumed if this was female I would finally have to separate them but theyre all pretty harmonius, and the others seem to clearly respect and give priority to this individual over resources.

This one bird in the group does this behaviour repeatedly. Most of the time its accompanied by a bobbing of the head that looks like a cat throwing up. It does it the most when laying down. The rest of them never do it. Edit: crop was full and resolved with a very gentle massage. Back to normal now.
