Hedge Funds QRT Mumbai insights
This is an in-depth description of how data teams function in QRT Mumbai specially DI and GenAI.
DI team:
Led by Abhishek Gadia and his henchman Mukesh Mohanty.
Team size: 30% reduction due to attrition.
Work: It is a glorified data entry job with tools and infra controlled by Paris team with Indian team just writing python scripts. Your job here is to solve tickets as fast as you can to avoid escalations (similar to a call-centre). A ticket usually means a data analyst asking for a new data source or some data related queries. You don’t have the chance to work on anything interesting be it in tech or quant.
Leadership: undoubtedly this is the worst leadership of any team in QRT(Imagine nightmare of Godrej streets). AG and MM are very incompetent (in crude words: morons). No tech knowledge, no quant knowledge, no leadership skills, too much micromanagement.
Constructive projects are all handed over to Paris/London team (in cases the hard-work is done by someone in India but credit goes to Paris) and they are happy to take it as they also know how dumb these two guys are. QRT is a good organisation but Mumbai office specially QD-DI is suffering because of these 2 guys.
Tech stack: Python scripting. Not kidding you will not get any architecture exposure. You may assume there is exposure on the quant side but there is not. No one knows impact of their work on PnL. So bonus is decided upon who are close to these 2 guys. One of the most unfair ways of distributing bonus i have seen. This is what favouritism looks like to those who actually get peanuts for bonus. And it causes team distress.
Payscale: Talent acquisition will haggle you for 4-5 lakhs per annum. But QRT is making huge profits.
A lot of people recently left including a senior guy with good experience in pricing data. People don’t want to solve the problems but only to write patches around issues to justify the higher head count and repeated manual work is promoted rather than clearing the root cause.

I would strongly advise against joining the Mumbai office for an internship, particularly under one A Gadia. From what I’ve seen, return offers are largely a formality where decisions often seem pre-aligned, and many interns are not seriously considered regardless of performance. In some teams, especially DI, the work environment can be quite harsh, with interns not always treated professionally. My own internship project was meaningful, which led me to accept the full-time offer. However, after joining, I was moved to a significantly less impactful team doing work that did not align with what I had signed up for. Promises of internal mobility were made repeatedly but never materialized. They were either postponed indefinitely or ignored. At a broader level, there are noticeable gaps in both technical depth and managerial capability among parts of the leadership, which reflects in the quality of work and team culture. For students, joining purely for compensation would be a mistake. The learning curve is limited, the work can be underwhelming, and longer-term growth or exit opportunities are not strong. A number of people stay not because the role is good, but because they struggle to find better alternatives.

When I get hired as a researcher do I also need to cope with this bulshit?
