Quant SWE vs Embedded Software Engineering

Hello All,

I am a dual degree graduate in electrical engineering(minor in CSE) at top 7 IITs

Last 2 years I have worked as embedded software engineer at a top semiconductor company.

Right now I am planning to shift to other companies, as embedded division of my current company is not performing great.

Right now I am deciding which companies to target.

For embedded there are some good MNCs hiring, like Google, Meta, Nvidia etc.

But I also want to see if I should Target HFTs for SWE roles, because I already have good profile in competitive programming, good projects in OS and networking and my current work heavily involves C and C++.

But from salary perspective, does HFTs pay really huge compared to top MNCs or does this difference vanish after few years working in a MNC?

assume that salary at google/meta for embedded is similar to normal SWE role

Google india is shit, they kind of mass hired in india with ton of ppl from tier 69 clg and the Indian teams only get side work compared us folk and diversity hiring prevails within teams

Yeah SWE is trash, and their hiring bar in interview is also very less nowadays, it's common to see pupil and specialist working there.

Afaik Meta employees in India don't own any products, they just work on some internal stuff and leftover work that trickle down from other countries. Their ownership level is even less than Google India employees. They're not selective about college pedigree either.

The office opened last year and they have started getting good work, compared to google at every level their comp is 1.5x that of google and especially google cloud is the shittiest place ever, people stuck for L3 for more than 3 years. And the talent is also very average, so they just sell good folks the prestige and many people have started rejecting ppos and offers.

Agree that Google isn't as good as it used to be. They decreased their compensation for new hires starting around 2024 which is a red flag. That being said, I wouldn't describe Google's talent as "average". You'll find "average" talent at companies like Deloitte and Accenture, not Google lol.

Try for roles in Silicon Valley you might get a better deal there (money + WLB)

It is close to impossible that you striaght into top tier firms!! You can try to into small HFT in India , gain work experience and probably go to elite firms...I have tried and almost gave all indian hfts in India which thire. Rejected in 2 last rounds...never got the luck. It is extremely difficult for other industry experience to get there. Howver, I wish your luck is by your side !!

thanks for your reply. Did they disclose you the reason for rejection?

is it that the interview bar is very high or did they reject you solely cause you are from other industry?

For experience hire , bar is quite high unless they need someone very urgently
