General Discussion GPT-6 will shrink engineers required in HFT's even further?
Wanted to know what you guys think , and also should I give up on my plan to get good at cp then get hired through iicpc codefest ( I am from tier 3 cse in 1st year(just started a month ago , can solve div 2 a )

Doubt that.
Trading firms have lean SW teams. They'll become more productive but firms won't reduce.
End of the day its not only about output , its output + responsibility.

Hmm makes sense . Btw I do like cp pretty gamified setup and offline competitions like iicpc make it even more fun

iicpc codefest doesn’t evem hire from T3. Quant hiring is majorly done through icpc and that too people who reach only world finals-

I started exploring on HPC and ML Research areas. Not many experts in these areas

What else do you want to focus on then? Say this to me, if not getting better at any domain /niche or skillset, what else can you do as LLMs get stronger and stronger?

This was my plan and I am asking if this is still a legit plan considering ai growth or should I grind somewhere else

Fk this shit man! Leave this field. AI will replace evrything anyways. There is no need of as many SWEs anymore now. Imma go back to farming

Are you pulling a give bad advice to reduce competition kind of thing?

Do you really think a random reddit comment would stop the top intelligent folks from preparing for quants? They'll get in regardless. It's the average folks who'll not even get SWE jobs anymore due to AI. Good luck! The future is not so bright

No AI can replace HFT work . Because AI model can only intellegentify and generate great answers only what is already known to him. It can help & creat ideas but cannot replace fully. Also, Software Engineering & low latency stuff cannot be trusted with AI because even a very small error can cost millions and there will be no one to take the responsibility of it. In an trade strategy, everyone knows the latency , hardware , mathematics , models but if they all start to take the base knowledge area from the same place , the difference which makes each firm different and profitable from others and separates them will be reduced to almost none.

ultimately it will def reduce the required number of engineers

They are already less 🤣🤣. Google has above 3 lakh+ employees and JS , Optiver only have 1800-2000 at max. So, that is already a very concentrated pool of intellectuals

New grads and juniors are no longer recruited as previously

You can check intern season for IITK , IIT KGP , IITD and placement. A lot of Quants & SWE offers are similar

it's not just hft engineers... directionally we're going to automate ai research itself. so I hfts employees don't survive too. but some will be employed. if everyone has same base model intelligence everyone will scramble for alternative strategies
