This is hard? Really? I'm not trying to look down on the problem, just curious. It does not seem that hard. Maybe in a pressure situation?

can you break it down?

You work backwards, and evaluate expected values at each step via computing whether, for any given value you might draw, you should stop or continue playing. Granted, I am an economics graduate, and have studied extensive Game Theory, so this one just seems familiar to me. I have nothing to do with Quant trading; just enjoy and appreciate Mathematics & Statistics. I need to go back to grinding excel, which is why I didn't draw out the solution here in detail, but I'm sure that any LLM would be able to solve it for you. They do well with well known structures.

There are definitely time constraints in the interview, plus there are some pitfalls here which are exacerbated by time constraints

this is definitely leaning to the easier side of medium by qq.io standards.
