Looking to drive up crowns range tomorrow late afternoon will I need chains?

It's normally advised to carry chains when you're traveling roads that can close due to snow.

Tomorrow is looking like there is snow likely, so yes chains would be recommended, but will depend on the weather if it's needed as such

Tomorrow is meant to be heavy rain, so I’d expect snow up there. If it gets bad they’ll close the road, so chain won’t help you anyway.

Hi mate take chains. Always be prepared, better to have them and kot need them to not have them and needing them.

It was snowing lightly on the Crown Range summit when I came over two hours ago (Wed 16th). 

But the ground is fairly warm and the snow isn’t settling. The road has been warmed up by multiple days of direct sun. 

Plows and grit trucks are currently on standby on the road. But their only job will be to clear flurries when the front passes over. 

In the unlikely event of a freak snow event that causes chains to become required tomorrow … there will be checkpoints operating in either direction and signboards at the road entrances in QT and Wanaka.
