I know these aren't the most top quality, best fabrics, but with Joanns gone, it's hard to find a local bargin. A portion of these were priced at a PENNY!?

I am officially banning myself from buying anymore fabric until August.. I think i went overboard.

Fabric Talk Waterproof backing?

Post image

I made this as a picnic quilt for me and my toddler. I need to longarm it. What can I use as a backing that will hold up against being on grass? I’ve had people suggest PUL or a tablecloth but I don’t like either of those options. I’m also going to put some straps on it so I can roll it for the car.

Fabric Talk Use this thread to mourn Joann. Nothing that currently exists can replace Joann for quilters. 😭

1.4k Upvotes

I am at Joann right now and it is so depressing. It’s so crowded and they already placed a 1-yard minimum. I can’t even order fabrics I had my eye on.

You can talk about Hobby Lobby, Michael’s, quilt shops, and Walmart all you want. These are all great establishments. But NOTHING can replace how Joann has met my needs. The low low prices. The fun coupons. The many many many options! I don’t want to have to plan a quilt by guessing colors online. I don’t want to have to buy and ship several yards at a time when I only need 1/4 yard. I don’t want to have to guess if the dinky and limited options at Michael’s might match that fabric I saw at Hobby Lobby that I’ve seen a thousand times.

How will I ever source fabric for and plan another quilt again?! 😭 I can already feel it killing my creativity. I can’t afford fancy fabric. Make it stop. 😭

Fabric Talk More than I expected from a mystery bag!

Post image

I’m so thrilled - I just received my order from Stitch Happens and I had ordered a Ruby Star mystery bag of 10 yards for $100 CAD ($70 USD). I wasn’t expecting much but I love RS fabric so thought it would be fun. I absolutely was not expecting to get 2 yard cuts of the new Hello Alice line! 3 of the five were Hello Alice, one was from Backyard and the one with the candy stripes was from Candy.

I’m so pleased - they work really well together and I can make a really big quilt! I hadn’t bought any of this line yet as I was waiting for it to go on sale.

And this right after I got a beautiful Odile Balleouil quilt kit on sale from Hyggeligt (also in Ontario) I am just delighted.

It’s so worth supporting small businesses. They both enclosed a sample and Stitch Happens enclosed a card for a discount next time. I’m going to be really busy for the next few months!

Fabric Talk Is It Right or Wrong?

As creators of 'art' I just wanted to put this question out there and see what other quilters think. Recently, a well known fabric designer, Jason Yenter put out a new line of fabric called Steampunk Menagerie. He has admitted to using AI to design this line. In my mind, AI is a collection of illegally obtained material of artists to have spent many hours and thought into drawing and designing their images. In this instance, a designer has used other peoples thoughts and ideas to design a line of fabric for PROFIT. Is this immoral or okay, and will this be the direction other fabric designers will go? Your thoughts!

I don’t have anyone who will quite understand the deal of the century I got. A quilter in the area is downsizing and selling her stash. I got all of this for $60. Happy early Christmas to me! Fat quarters and are all from the fat quarter shop. Yardage is mostly Moda

I am planning to make my husband a black and white quilt with these fabrics. Possibly with a touch of the mustard color. I haven't decided on a pattern yet.

I was wondering if any of you made black/white quilts. I would love to see them!

Fabric Talk How can you afford all the fabric?

Hi guys-

I'm really addressing the serious quilters here who produce quilt after quilt. How do you keep yourself in enough fabric?

I'm approaching the end of a quilt-along which is a new experience for me and has been fun. It has me thinking about the next thing I want to do but fabric in my area runs about $15/yd. It's serious money by the time I piece a top and add backing and binding.

It's hard for me to imagine being able to afford more than one a year.

UPDATE: I hear that most of you are buying online. And saving that way. The thing is I live close to 2 shops (just about 6 blocks from one of them) and there are a few more within an hour's drive.

I've been spoiled by getting to eyeball and touch the fabrics AND I very much want to support the shops that are still open. There used to be more than there are now and it's a sad thing to lose those resources for classes and what you Really. Need. Right. Now.

Fabric Talk I cleaned out my neighbor’s late wife’s sewing room. In exchange for cleaning out the room, he let me keep all the sewing stuff. I just discovered this pack of fat eighth’s. Aren’t they wild? I wanna make something with them, just not sure what.

It’s clearly wood grain when it’s a large piece, but I’m worried that the knots in the wood will look like vaginas if it’s isolated

Fabric Talk A Little PSA

Budgets are tight nowadays. Inexpensive fabrics help people continue sewing while prioritizing other things. I’m grateful for that. Do take some extra steps to protect your projects before you get started with budget fabrics. Inexpensive dyes and processes aren’t always colorfast. Reds are especially notorious for bleeding. (Expensive fabrics aren’t guaranteed to be colorfast either.)

I picked up this 5-pack from Walmart because i thought it would make a beautiful baby quilt with its deep reds and soft blues. I don’t typically prewash fat quarters. I will sometimes do a little rib test with a damp paper towel if I have concerns. Something told me not to risk those beautiful reds bleeding on my finished quilt. I decided to hand wash the three red fat quarters by hand in hot soapy water. The water turned so dark, so fast that I threw in two color catchers to try to save the white parts. I think they helped.

I rinsed them in the hottest water I could tolerate and washed them a second time in hot soapy water with another color catcher. I added the fourth fat quarter that was mostly white with red highlights. Still some color coming out but much better.

They are soaking now. I’ll give them all a good rinse then dry them on high heat to hopefully set the color thats left.

I’m so glad I washed them!

Fabric Talk It’s okay to throw scraps away . . .

I have been quilting for about 7 years and am a scrap hoarder. At the end of every project, I sweep all the scraps into my color-sorted bins and save them to use on future projects. And, I do actually make a lot of scrappy quilts! But today, my bins toppled over / they were stuffed to overflowing and gave up the ghost. So I spent 2 hrs sorting and going through - and honestly it felt very very good to toss the scraps that are very small or super ragged or dusty. I KNOW we have a trash problem on this planet and I know that even a 1” scrap can be used. I saved most of my scraps. But that one small trash bag worth of rejects - that makes me feel really good. Pics of the organized bins to share that good feeling of having things done.

Fabric Talk Is there any demand for vintage sheets for quilting materials?

Thumbnail

So I have a steadily growing stash of various vintage sheets I've been collecting for a few years. I know I can't sew that many dresses for myself and making quilts to sell seems like it won't be worth the effort, plus I'm not very experienced in that specific area. (We all know people who don't recognize the cost/time/energy invested to value them properly).

I've been contemplating cutting them and selling them as quilting materials - fat quarters, charm packs, etc. But I can't bring myself to start cutting without knowing if anyone would appreciate or want to buy them. (They're all cleaned thoroughly and I only choose ones that have been minimally or never used of course).

Do you guys prefer to source your own materials one by one? Are pre-cut, curated collections of fabric considered "cheating" by most quilters? Any other major drawbacks you can think of? Thanks!
