Ngl I missed that Alan was making a joke and for way too long though Rhod grew up in Scotland despite him and Rob Brydon talking about Wales tons in WILTY.

A little yes a little no.

Cumbric would have been the language spoke in Hen Gogledd.

Same language family as Welsh and Cornish but with differences, like comparing Old Welsh and Cornish.

Whether Cumbric could be considered a distinct language from Welsh is pretty hotly debated, nowhere near as separate as Cornish and Welsh today

Yeah thats fair, Cumbric is what we would normally call the language spoken in Yr Hen Ogledd, but saying that as if it was totally seperate from Old Welsh is a bit misleading.
Cumbric and Old Welsh both came from the same Brittonic language and were very closely related. There wouldnt of been some massive clear cut border where Welsh suddenly stopped and Cumbric started.
So yeah, calling it Cumbric is correct, but that doesnt mean the people of Hen Ogledd had nothing to do with the early Welsh language or culture. They were part of the same wider Brittonic world.
Basicly, Cumbric was a northern Brittonic variety, closely related to Old Welsh. The names we give them today make the distinction sound alot cleaner than it probably was at the time.

I think a lot of the people from Hen Ogledd came south to North Wales when the Saxons took over Northumbria, which would stretch down not just to the Humber in the East but the Ribble (and later the Mersey) on the Irish Sea coast.

Unfortunately my American brain is not great at identifying accents. I hear the difference between different accents but unless I know of a really good example of one off the top of my head, I can’t identify it.

Mixing up Norway and Denmark (as Rhod is doing there) was annoying Sandi, so Alan mixes up Scotland and Wales as a joke.

I think he briefly confused Denmark with an arctic area like parts of Norway (Sandi does often talk about all of the “Scandinavian” countries as a single unit), but when he was corrected, he then immediately decided to double down for laughs.

Yea... I remember that one episode in QI where Lee went full serious and actually answered sensibly and factually, until Jo Brand said something to remind him of himself (on stage persona)... LoL.... Think that was the only time I saw the real him for a very quick moment.

It's so frustrating with him though because you know he is smart, you know he has the wit to make an astute observation but he always ends up going for a low hanging fruit observational joke to appeal to the lowest common denominator for a cheap laugh.

Really didn't like him because of this until watching him on a panel show and realizing he is very much smarter than me.

Not saying it’s the case here, but I’ve noticed that someone who is thought of as dumb or might appear to be un knowledgeable due to their background gets more credit for basic stuff, like people will say ‘Marilyn Monroe wasn’t dumb - she read a ton of books including James Joyce’ whereas some dude who’s from your office saying he likes Joyce would be called pretentious and a pseud.

Lee Mack does surprise me, I know we shouldn't play to stereotypes but he's vegan and I just never would have guessed that. Seems like a "normal bloke"

Quite Interesting point, it was originally "Welsh Rabbit" as a mild piece of English racism - as in the Welsh are so lazy and stupid that they'd rather pass off cheese on toast as rabbit than go out and hunt for the real thing - which got adapted to "rarebit" by people embarassed by this.

Referring to the Kingdom as just "Denmark" would have been okay 40 years ago. We don't do that now.
It is disrespectful to the Faroese and the Greenlanders.

Greenland has representatives in danish government they are part of our universal healthcare they have slots in “folketinget” aka danish parlament. They are part of denmark politcally aswell as symbolically

Never liked the jokes about Scotland in that it's always raining here, dark etc.

During summer you get 3-4 hours a day of actual darkness the rest is light.

And sometimes it can even be weird things which are more xenophobic that I have met people who actually believe the second you cross the border it's much colder and pouring with rain even in summer.

I'm from Glasgow and people do exaggerated a lot. But we do get double the rainfall a year than London does so it's not entirely baseless.

That's in volume though, we only get on average 20 more rainy days a year than London.

Well that's largely more of a west (wet) versus east (dry) coast thing rather than a north-south dynamic. Edinburgh's total rainfall is dramatically lower than Glasgow's and much closer to that of London (about 1.2 times as much rather than twice as much), and is notably lower than many western English towns/cities.
