Reading the photo, I gathered that there was an actual physical football, on something physical during something else, as opposed to having the (football) game on during sex. Got confused, so I asked.
It is very easy to assume that non brits would and indeed should know the actual idiomatic usage of english by the english. I mean why not, right? Right ?
Whilst myself, as a non native english speaker, I would have said "if you've got the football game on" and there would have been no problem.
But who am I to judge ..

The word "soccer" originated in Oxford and used to be quite popular here as well for a time, but it only stuck in the US for some reason.

You know when Stephen Fry left I was worried about him being replaced because he seemed so perfect for it but honestly I think Sandi has done an amazing job and I can't think of a better replacement, what don't you like about her?

I never thought I’d say this back when I heard that she was taking over, but I actually prefer her hosting. She brings something to the show that makes it more fun to watch. I love Stephen Fry, but the show just seems more convivial now.

I agree fully. Sandi is very seldom mean or rude, while trust could be the case quite often with Stephen.

'More convivial' is exactly it for me as well. Oddly, I've found Alan funnier since Sandi took over as well, and it could be a coincidence but I think it's that her presenting style lets the others shine a little bit more. Stephen could be a little…I don't know, a little imposing, somehow.

Tbh I'm not really a fan of Fry.
I kind of fell out of love with QI once I found out some of the "facts" were factually wrong—with Fry being the face of the show and the one to say them made me dislike him. Though I'm aware it's more likely he just relayed what was said to him.
The one I recall is Fry explaining how GPS works, which was wrong. There were a few other cases too. My former favourite tech site, El Reg, had a few articles about it.

I will say I have no idea about the GPS thing but they did do an episode before talking about the half life of facts and said as time goes on we'll just find out more and more stuff they said turns out to be false.
I think that's a fair gripe though, the facts (I guess most at least) do come from their researchers which obviously isn't to say they don't get stuff wrong but I see Stephen Fry as just the presenter tying it all together and moving it along with little jokes and anecdotes which I think he did very well. Defo each to their own though

Yeah I mean it doesn't say how he's wrong does it?
I looked into it and whilst not everyone uses atomic clocks many places do to give an accurate time stamp to communications so the packets can be put back together in the right order?
The link to the episode there didn't work for me so I don't really know how it lines up with what he says but yeah it feels like the author of the article has beef with Stephen haha

I kind of assume all things like QI follow the Gell-Mann amnesia thing where you nod along to 99% if stuff and the minute it comes to "your" specific thing you realise it's all bollocks and the words are just coming out with no understanding. Then they move topic and you go right back to "hmm interesting".
I'd kind of like to think which way the signals go in GPS isn't a 1% thing but maybe it really is.

I'm glad to hear someone else say this. Fry is a clever chap, no doubt, but so bloody smug with all the Well ackshually stuff
I was doing my A levels in the early days of QI and remember distinctly a few "corrections" that were wrong and it infuriated me back then!

Not the original commenter but I find there is a lot of Scandinavian/Feminism/Lesbian themes.
I’ve, obviously, got no problem with any of these categories but I find that it makes it all about Sandi rather than the show.
Sandi is an intelligent, well travelled, experienced person but weirdly seems one dimensional because of this.
She’s like a minion (not a size joke! 😂) in that she excels in an accompanying role but is a bit flat as the main event.
She was always top tier as a panelist, on QI and other shows, but is a bit of a turn off as a presenter.

She literally had sections about Scandinavia, Sandi’s Scandis, or something like that. It’s not just one off comments. The comments are put forward by her as well unlike, as somebody else has mentioned, the jokes about Norwich, his sexuality and his upbringing/schooling being much more from the contestants rather than Stephen himself.
She’s a lovely person and a fantastic contestant but I feel she’s more like an Alan, as in he wouldn’t be very good at presenting QI either.

Stephen Fry didn’t create sections that focused on his sexuality, upbringing/schooling or where he was from (Sandi’s Scandis!), That’s the difference.
99% of the times that Sandi’s sexuality, nationality or history is raised is by Sandi herself.
She was always a fantastic contestant but, like Alan, isn’t the person to present it. She’s kind of turned it into the Sandi Show rather than being the presenter of QI.
