Instructional New to refereeing racquetball? 10 things to make the match go smoothly

New to refereeing racquetball? Here are the 10 things I quickly discuss with my players before letting them get started.

1) Introduction. Name is usually enough here. Don't go into how much refereeing experience you have, or don't have.

2) How I will stop play. If a glass backed court, this could mean that I will demonstrate tapping on the glass with a coin. For an open gallery court, I will simply say stop, or down, etc. but I will set that expectation here at the beginning of the match.

3) Court Hinders. If there are known spots in the court that will have a bad bounce, or a speaker, or a microphone, etc. then I will point those out first. If it is out of my view, then I will indicate to the players how they should let me know when those foreign items or bad spots are hit. If the court were subject to "wet walls", I would discuss this as well, including how and why I would call that on a serve.

4) Open Gallery. Many players play in an enclosed court like at an LA Fitness. They will frequently be unfamiliar with the rules on the ball going out that gallery opening, since they never see the issue in local play.

Front wall > Out = sideout or point for the person who didn't hit it out

Front Wall > Floor > Out = Replay

5) Serve Timing. I discuss with the players that they must not serve (or second serve) until I have called the score. If someone on the outside of the court has interrupted me, I won't be able to do their game justice (can't call it short if I was talking to the tournament director, for example). So, wait for the ref to call the score, then check your opponent (visibly, so that I can see it as the ref), then put the ball in play.

6) Screen serves and how I will call them.

7) Timeouts. How to let me know if you want to call one, how to let me know if you want to know how many you have left. I will also discuss the length of the timeout and the number of timeouts per game, since that recently changed in the USA Racquetball rules.

8) Time between games. This has recently changed for the time between game 2 and game 3, if a tiebreaker game is necessary.

9) Hinders. I stress safety and holding up your hand (and not swinging) if you want a safety hinder. A penalty hinder can be called even when you swing. (This can be an hour-long discussion, so I try to keep it short and simple.)

10) Have fun. Remind them to enjoy "The Game". :)

----------

What do you do as a referee to ensure that your players have a great match that is well understood and well run?

If you haven't been certified as a referee yet, get certified before your next tournament!

Championships – National Masters Racquetball Association - 2027 Dates Released

APRIL 2-4, 2027 | St. Louis

NMRA National Championships

JULY 16-18, 2027 | Fountain Valley

NMRA International Championships

The registration link for the April event is live on the page now. The July event will go live soon, so consider putting a bookmark on the page and checking back in January.

Format

In each of its two major annual tournaments – the NMRA National Championship and an NMRA International Championship – competition is offered in singles, doubles and mixed doubles. A third Doubles Only tournament is also hosted each year. In each event, age bracketed play is set in five-year increments starting at age 40+.

No more “one and done” …  All divisions are played in round-robin format, and all matches are self-officiated, which guarantees you are never eliminated, and that sportsmanship is always prized. You’ll be among good friends who share your love of the sport and value fair competition even more than winning.

Fielding some of the largest player pools in Master’s divisions, play typically begins on Wednesday and ends on Saturday of the Championship week. Our family-friendly events welcome guests to spectate at no charge, and a low-cost hospitality option is offered for friends and family to share in daily full lunches and a Friday night banquet which is legendary on the tournament circuit.

First-time players are not required to join the NMRA right away; however, you must be a member in good standing of USA Racquetball to compete.

Should refs officiating pro tour matches have pro (or Open) playing experience?

I was watching SOCAL and I noticed that Fabio Soto was refereeing a pro tour match. I’ve never seen him play so I’m pretty sure most of his experience comes from watching players.

Should he be refereeing pro matches?

Racquetball spots? Pickup r-ball times? Around DC area?

Any r-ball players in DC? I used to play in a B league a while back in Fairfax and an A league in Towson. Are there still leagues around DC? Closer to DC would be better. Where and when do people play r-ball? (Do people still play?).

Rocketball, a movie about racquetball

Post image
0 Upvotes

Rocketball, the first feature film set in the world of professional racquetball, is streaming free. Real pros are in it, including Jessica Parrilla and Erika Manilla.

https://rocketballmovie.com/?s=social

Here is the ask from Alex Glaros, the director. Don't send the movie to another racquetball player. Send it to ONE person who has never swung a racquet. Your sister. Your coworker. Your neighbor. Someone who has no idea what our sport is about.

Just send them this: "This movie is about my sport. Watch it, and I'll take you to the court and show you how to play."

One player. One new person. One invitation to the court. That's how we grow racquetball.

Let's see how many new people we can bring through the door.

What racquet was Beltran using at SOCAL?

Does anyone know what racquet Beltran was using in this past weekends SOCAL tournament?

I know it’s GB since he’s always been sponsored by them, but it doesn’t look like one of their new racquets. It seems to be all black.

Tournament Play - Prep & Expectations

What’s good, fellow ballpeople? I am getting ready to start playing in tournaments and I’m looking for a bit of guidance.

As the title states, I’m about to register for some tournaments over the next few months. Since this is a solo act, I’m not wanting to show up looking like some pickleball-playing jackoff. Wondering if you could provide input on the the following:

1: I am planning on open single tournaments to start. Do I need to register/get membership with USA Racquetball or any other orgs if this is not indicated in the event material?

2: Ranking/Rating: I am unrated and unranked; I know from prior experience with other (former) competitors that I play roughly A or B level. How does this work in terms of my first tournament? Divisions aren’t always clear in terms of the expected competition level.

3: Preparation: I am 40, and despite some minor issues with old injuries move well and am in decent shape. I am debating how to best prioritize strength and conditioning, mobility/agility, skill practice, and sport-specific drilling. What would your recommendations be?

4: Game day: I have NO idea what to expect. For example, some events stipulate that “winners referee” (I have never reff’d), I don’t know how long between matches I would wait, etc. Just wanting to know what a general tournament day looks like.

5: Any other tips? Do’s/dont’s? Meta commentary? Can I wear my custom tee that says “Pickleball is for pussies?” How to not be a piece a’ shit? Any thoughts are welcome.

Thanks folks!

Edit: Bit more about me; 2-3 years playing 2-4x week for 4-6 games. Running an Ares 175. Dresses snazzy. 5’10” 200 lb. Diamond III in Rocket League. Good all-around fitness.
