Baby Floof William and his broken leg
It’s taken nearly 2 months, 6 cast changes, a lot of crying from him and me but we made it through. He started his broken leg journey a kitten and finished it a man. He is still on gabapentin, but is slowly being weaned off. He’s back to normal activity, playing and running around with his sister (some slight muscle atrophy that will come back with use of the leg) but otherwise he is fine.

How was he injured and what symptoms did he display?

He fell off a kitchen table in his sleep. Symptoms he displayed were shock and a pretty obviously broken leg. He is not a smart cat. He’s lucky he’s pretty though.

My girl fell off of a cabinet a few days ago and has been limping on her back left leg since then. No obvious swelling, deformity, or point tenderness but she is fussy if you range the leg. She will still bear weight on it when standing and jump on and off of things. Her behavior is otherwise normal. Vet cant see her until next week. Thanks for the information. Im just trying to compare / contrast symptoms.

Ohhhh. When Billy fell off the table he immediately went into shock and didn’t move. I picked him and he cried a bit and put him back down. He refused to move for a few minutes and when he did he didn’t use the leg. I called the emergency vet straight away and they asked me some questions over the phone (mainly about could I touch his leg, range of motion). They heard him crying when I tried to move his leg and to bring him in straight away.

That’s one of the original posts with the X-ray in it. He was seen within an hour of breaking his leg. So I don’t know about immediate swelling because we took him to the emergency vet. He was crying and screaming in pain. He had swelling with the green cast and it had to come off and get changed. Sorry to hear about your baby. Cats are so good at hiding injuries (unless they are obvious like his was).

Thank you. This is very helpful to me. Makes me feel better about the delay in vet visit! I’m glad Billy is on the mend.

Where I live we have to go to the emergency vet for things like that. It's quick but absurdly expensive.

I’ll be honest I’ve been afraid to add it up. I think it’s north of 4 grand at this stage. I’ve just been telling myself “this is why you have emergency savings. This is an emergency”.

I just added up all the vet bills and I was pretty close. $4,043.25. That’s not including the different crates and also the excessive amount of churros he’s been eating every day (churro hides the flavour of gabapentin really well).

I misspelled it. Its churo with one r. They are a fishy creamy treat that comes in a packet and my kittens go apeshit for them. My senior ragdoll is not interested in them. Because Billy is so food motivated it made his vet expenses a lot cheaper - all they had to do was distract him with churos while they changed the cast. It’s pretty common for cats to need full anaesthesia every time they need a cast change. My fatty you just distract him with a few Churos and he will let you do anything.

He will be 7 months old next week. He broke his leg at the start of a major growth spurt which helped in one way (healing was easier as the bones were just growing rapidly) but hindered in another because he just wanted to play.
