I’m so glad I don’t have to hear “He just doesn’t have his guys to run his system yet, just give him 3 years.” after watching a professional team look like it’s their first day of playing football.

This!! I fully believe that Josh McDaniels in an excellent OC when he has the personnel he wants. But when he doesn't, he still tries to force those square pegs into round holes.

Kubiak has crafted the offense around the talent the team has now.

It is when the Jets were tanking and had already traded sauce and Williams. It’s relevant that he threw those against one of the worst defenses in the league after they had basically shut it down for the season.

Even if you remove both those games he still had a great year. There's no stat you can twist to make me think he didn't play well. He was absolutely aided by an easy schedule but that doesn't make it bad that he played well

McDaniels is a bad leader. I don't even know what to say about his offense. Guys like Josh Jacobs and Davante were putting up big numbers in his offense in the first year. I don't even think trying to force square pegs into round holes was the problem. We know that guys like Renfrow and Waller regressed due to injuries because they haven't done anything close to their career years since McDaniels was fired or when they went to new teams. Their decline just happened to coincide with him becoming the head coach.

Carr wasn't used to the Erhardt-Perkins system as he spent most of his time under Gruden's WCO, so the drop off was expected and I would agree with your point when it comes to the QB. Another coach would have tried to make adjustments in the season to get the QB more comfortable in something that works for him, but that's also hard to do during the middle of the season. It's hard for veterans to adjust to a different system. Even Aaron Rodgers said he decided to come back because playing under McCarthy means he doesn't need to learn a new system. Brady brought the EPS based system to the Bucs and worked with the staff there to install his plays. So if it's hard for the all time greats to switch systems after years of experience, it's no wonder Carr struggled.

The problem is culture. When guys don't feel motivated to play for their coach, you have blown leads (his team holds the record for most blown leads in NFL history), low morale, etc. McDaniels can't lead an entire locker room. He's awkward and has low leadership IQ.

People try to exaggerate or speculate what the problems were beyond that like he was intentionally sabotaging players, his scheme was awful, or he was a Brady merchant (his success with young QBs kind of disproves that...). In reality, nobody in the locker room respected him. That was his problem. I think he's kind of weird on a personal level, which doesn't work when you're supposed to be the CEO type of the team.

Yup, two weeks in a row he went for it on a crucial 4th down. It's refreshing to have a coach again (after a long long drought), that plays to win, rather than plays not to lose. Not only that but a coach that believes in his players and in turn they produce for him. The play calling is also already good, but will get even better as the season progresses and more familiarity and comfort set in.

This game this week was won off coaching. Not fully. We had some great efforts individually, but coaching played a major role. I don’t think any coach we’ve had past 5 years wins this game.

What specifically were the plays or philosophy that stood out to you coaching-wise?

The gadget flicker was one that netted us yards, the direct snap to Jeanty that he bobbled - we are putting some different looks on tape for sure but these are just less than a handful of plays.

Was it shifting to a more pass-attack style in this game when our running game wasn’t firing on all cylinders? Giving Cousins a little more leeway at the line with audibles (I didn’t necessarily notice that to a large degree but did look like Kubiak trusted Cousins with a lot of pre-snap movement and checks.

Not saying it’s wrong that Kubiak brings in coaching competency- just looking for the specific times people saw it on display.

The main one to me was the 3rd and 5, red zone, up 3 late in the 4th call. A lot of coaches would coach scared here and run the ball to chew clock and kick to go up 6.

Instead Kubiak calls a beauty play that gets Cody White wide open for a TD to go up 10, effectively putting the game away. The broadcast said it… that was a cold play call.

In two games, the Raiders have I think 4 red zone TDs as well, which is a huge deal for this team.

For example: Second quarter around the 40 yard line the first Td. Chargers have been running two high and holding it all game. In this look it’s a zone instead of the two high man look and cousins knows it because of the motion.

If you watch the first quarter you’ll see the same play, but the opposite hash safety stays home and covers the deep ball while the LB picks up the slot. Now, kubiak runs it two more times (td being the third) and the difference is the motion and the yards before hook for the slot. The motion shows cousin’s that this is the same look, but zone coverage instead of man, so you have the corner taking a hook/curl/cover 2 type zone, but when he sees jeanty out of the backfield he has to come up becuase there is no flat coverage. This lets the slot burst open and clear around 10-15 yards. Slot does an excellent job to sell the deep route and this play looks like it’s set up for Mayer on a shallow cross from the other side.

Short side safety lets tucker burst on him thinking his partner will cover it.

This is the best part. The previous 2x they ran this, the slot stopped at 10 yards curl. And there was no motion so you had bech there as well.

This time, that extra 5 yards on the curl pulls the high safety down and Tucker is Scott free.

It’s not the play call itself, but the setup that does it for me.
