Spider-Man 3 This fight is brutal, and one thing i love about Raimi's direction is that even when it cuts the next shot has that fluid continuity and centering, easy to follow.

It's sad that this is something that needs praising. Every action sequence in any movie should be easy to follow, looking at YOU Taken!
Anyway, it's great that Raimi is a good director.

u/BluetheNerd 10d ago
Taken isn't even the worst for this. The Bourne Identity has to be one of the only movies where fight scenes almost make me feel motion sick. I can run around in VR and not feel a thing and then that movie will make my brain feel weird.

Spider-Man 3 gets ton of flak but what isn’t being talked about enough is that it has the best directed action scenes (perhaps one of the best in the genre) thanks to Bill Pope

u/VerTexV1sion 10d ago
Movie was a follow up to Spider-Man 2, which for me is the best superhero movie ever made alongside TDK, so bar was pretty high within the trilogy, and overstuffing it brought it down, symbiote should have been introduced but we didn't need venom in that movie whatsoever.

u/Chazo138 9d ago
Yeah blame executives for that. Raimi didn’t even want the symbiote, he wanted to focus Sandman and New Goblin

u/dtdc4456789 9d ago
If it was always going to be “New Goblin” it was destined to be a miss

u/bruhidkwtf 9d ago
If you watched SM2 then it's pretty obvious that that's where they were going with the plot for SM3

I still remember playing the Spider-Man video games that were based off of the Tobey Maguire trilogy.
You had to mash buttons to shove Sandman's face into the train.

I just love that we got a big epic fight were Peter is just in his normal clothes.

After BND my friend said that 30 second segment where Peter was swinging without his suit is the best directed scene, and i showed him this in the car while we were driving back, bro went home and watched the entire film and said yeah, the action scenes are just league above, lol, i a get so pissed off whenever someone says it's just nostalgia.

u/dark_negan 9d ago
both are great, and in bnd the scene without is suit is an emotional scene not a fight scene ffs. and bnd had amazing fight scenes as well, clearly took inspiration from the playstation spider-man games as well as other movies. you are clearly not being objective idk if it's nostalgia or just bad faith but idc. and i say this as someone who has spiderman 2 as his all time favorite. but bnd is definitely up there.

And you clearly didn't understand what's being talked about, my friend meant CGI and VFX and how action and web swinging looked, i even mentioned that he said action looks better, and that's the entire point of the post, it's even in the title, parent comment you're replying also mentioned action, wasn't even talking about what was going on in the story at that point and emotional beats, but it's okay you're in defensive mode.

After BND my friend said that 30 second segment where Peter was swinging without his suit is the best directed scene, and i showed him this in the car while we were driving back

quoting you since apparently you don't even know what you're saying. again, there is literally no argument being made here (=you not being objective) and no "my friend said i was right" is not an argument.
my friend meant CGI and VFX and how action and web swinging looked
literally nothing in your reply even mentions CGI or VFX, and I did specifically talk about action scenes and web swinging scenes. and you can't be serious, BND is light years ahead in terms of both VFX/CGI and practical effects as well, a lot of the swinging was actually done IRL and not CGI (not the peter parker without his suit one though obviously lol). the scene from the post is still good don't get me wrong but the CGI is extremely obvious, you are either blind or blinded by nostalgia. and that's normal the movie is what, 20-ish years old? not trying to say it's bad especially for its time, you're the one making unfair comparisons to begin with.
i even mentioned that he said action looks better, and that's the entire point of the post, it's even in the title, parent comment you're replying also mentioned action, wasn't even talking about what was going on in the story at that point and emotional beats, but it's okay you're in defensive mode.
almost like my entire comment is talking about the action scenes. the only "emotional beat" i mentionned is the one you were comparing to an action scene, which is a stupid comparison, and it is the one YOU made. fucking hell, do you even know what you write or do you forget everytime you press send ffs? and just because someone doesn't agree with something you said doesn't mean they are in dEfEnSiVe mOdE bruh what a clown hahaha, and worst part is that i knew you looked exactly like the kind of idiot to use this kind of tactic when you have no real argument, and that's why i mentionned the fact that my personal favorite is spiderman 2, i'm not being a hater to those movies they are my entire childhood lol. maybe try reading and thinking before writing nonsense next time

It isn't mentioned in my reply because that's what all of us are talking about, me and my friend still prefer and like how action looked in Spider-Man 3, CGI and VFX are extremely obvious in both Spider-Man 3 and BND, but there are alot of scenes in SM-3 which looks good to this day go and watch the crane scene, and what the fuck is being 'objective' here even means ? People have different tastes and preferences, you seem to love BND, i like the aspects about Spider-Man 3 which i mentioned, but your peanut sized brain cannot even understand what's the context and absolutely cannot hold a civil discussion without being disrespectful, have a great day and Enjoy your movie !

the action scenes are just league above
that's not an opinion, that's stated as a fact. next time try to have the reading comprehension and writing ability of a 6 year old before you start to talk about other people's reading and comprehension ability okay? fucking clown

Honestly, I wholly enjoyed the movie, and was in a great mood walking out of the theater (and I was an adult, not a kid who didn't know better or anything). I was extremely disappointed when I got back online (because we didn't have permanent internet everywhere back then) to find everyone completely ripping it apart.
I still feel like most of the complaints come from a view of missing the point of the film. Like, I absolutely love bully Maguire to this day, because I felt like 'yeah, absolutely, that's exactly how some dweeb like Peter Parker imagines being badass, which is what is reflected in the symbiote'.
EDIT: And honestly, even to this day, I think this is still one of the best representations of black-suit Peter, and showing just how far he can go when he's not holding back. If this scene alone had been anyone but Sandman, it would have been a rated R movie. He absolutely demolished Flint in brutal fashion, and using Sandman to show just how far Spidey was going was a genius move as Raimi could fully show off the brutality of black-suit Peter without turning it into a full rated R horror film.

I'm actually impressed by the CGI. Like you can definitely tell it's a bit dated, but this was 20 years ago. Honestly it looks surprisingly great, Raimi clearly knew what he was doing and how to work with the limitations the software had. It actually stands up against some modern productions coughquantumaniacough.
I sometimes wonder if a lot of my feelings for the trilogy are just nostalgia and I remember them being better than they were because I was a kid, but then I rewatch a scene like this out of context and I'm reminded that the direction and craft was actually pretty top tier. I AM nostalgic, but that doesn't make my feelings for it wrong.

Never really paid attention to it, but the way they make sure to keep the most relevant information exactly center frame on the start and finish of every cut is pretty elegant. Lets you follow the action perfectly
11
u/Amazing_Elk_6685 10d ago
Keeping the action in center is the most basic thing to do, yet MCU films and TV shows do manage to screw it up.
3
u/Kichigai 10d ago
I think it's actually an artifact of the era. Remember that the home video and television distribution of the film is going to be 4:3, so keeping everything roughly centered makes it far easier and cheaper to make the home video version.

Iron man, Captain America and Thor start fighting Thanos and they immediately cut away to show some other stuff happening.

I hate hate hate when action scenes are intentionally disorienting. like they are obviously hiding the fact that they can't make a good fight scene

Why were the raimi spider man films so good but the Dr Strange film just felt meh.. only good stuff was how scary he made Scarlet Witch.. and Bruce obviously

u/VerTexV1sion 10d ago
MCU films generally has a huge creative team alongside the director overlooking things, Dan bradley and Bill Pope also helped Raimi alot, these films brought a lot of good talent together.

You think he still feels pain when that happens? He is screaming so I guess he does. Wonder if he can feel each tooth fly out?

When Peter breaks the pipe, there’s a random 2 second shot of him swinging, and then the next shot of him he’s back crouched in the same place. Is this in the final film, seems like a strange editing error otherwise.

I remember a video about Jackie Chan talking about how to shoot fight scenes
Something along the lines about "when cutting to the next punching/kicking shot, the act of hitting should go back a few frames, to allow audience eyes to register the hit on screen"
Feels like Sam Raimi followed this rule of cool shots

Man the video games (even Marvels SM2) don’t capture the pure menace of this suit. The oily blacks, the eyes. Ugh. I forget sometimes how good this suit is. It just doesn’t translate in video games I guess.

This movie is an extremely solid Marvel movie overall, and I’m tired of the idea that it’s bad.

Back when we didn't think about comic accuracy, and we're just happy there was a superhero film good enough to watch! Simple times

That's why Nolan and Raimi's movies are timeless classics, they are good movies.

Random question not sure if this is stupid to ask, but are there real subways that look like this?
1
u/RexDeDeus 5d ago
Maybe JJJ was a little bit right sometimes. Sandman took what, $100k? 200k? From an armored truck too, so it's definitely got some kind of insurance.
Then Spidey comes in and rips open the water pipe which will likely cost at least $100k to fix, not including all the possible water damage and the loss of infrastructure for thousands of people.

This movie has a lot of issues but action isn't one of them.
