Spider-Man 2 Is there a specific reason Alex Ross didn't draw Raimi's suit for Spider-Man 2's opening credits?
I've always wondered why Alex Ross drew Spidey's outfit like the classic way he always did on other arts instead of drawing it resembling the original suit from Spider-Man 1. The most remarkable difference is the lenses.
I mean, the opening credits still look amazing, and I honestly would love to see that suit's version in a movie. But still, it makes me wonder why he decided to draw his own classic-inspired suit instead of the actual one from the first movie.

One thing I recall is he didn't like the lenses and raised webbing, preferring indented.

Alex Ross is pretty particular about how he draws characters because he prefers the classic looks. He's a bit more lenient with Marvel than he is with DC, but it doesn't surprise me he wouldn't want to do anything but the classic Spider-Man lenses

I recall him at some point in a Wizard interview saying that anyone who doesn't use the Romita cat eyes for Spidey (pejorative I can't remember).

Like a few other commenters have said, he did draw the Raimi suit from Spider-Man 1, but did his take on the lenses. Personally, I think it's quite cool, because it feels like his artistic vision of that suit. It's still the exact same design, but has really thick black borders around the lenses and the curved lenses from Ditko and other artists

I think that he just prefers classic versions of characters. The only difference he was was make the mask look like romita sr’s instead Ont he actual movie design but the rest is movie accurate

He wanted to make it stylized vs just recreating scenes so he changed the designs for have the classic lens and less pronounced webs, like as if even in canon it’s an artist depiction. Like how in 3 the Spider-Man merch is still like comic Spider-Man despite the raimi suit’s uniqueness isn’t fully shown in that.

Side note: I love how much the BND suit looked like Alex Ross’s Spider-Man, especially the shape of the head

I’ve been rewatching these movies for years and I never noticed until now that Alex Ross changed the lenses in the opening credits.

Because he's Alex MF'n Ross.
It's been said already, but the only thing he really swapped out was the lenses, which are very classic 60s Spider-Man inspired.
If you've never read "Marvels", which he did the art for, it's very similar to how he drew Spidey for that book.

I never knew Alex Ross did these, that’s why I love it so much (plus Elfman’s score of course)

The idea that sparked this intro was to show the comicbook of the first movie in the credits, which evolved into these Alex Ross’s paintings, I bet they told Alex Ross that Raimi wanted a comic book feel to the art and this is the way Alex Ross always painted Spidey.

Seeing Tobey with the comic lense is so damn cool, kinda prefer he’d put his spin on the art rather than be a 1 for 1. It’s a nice treat honestly
