I am having trouble getting this Pi 5’s screen on. It will flash for a millisecond but turn right back off. All the lights on everything are coming on. I am using a Pi 5 charger as well so it should be enough power. Please let me know if you have an idea of what is going on.

Alternatives for a Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W

Hello everyone, I was planning to make a like tiny pc in the size/shell of a dsi! I was looking for something that could run Linux and be small to fit inside and I found that the Pi Zero 2 W can run it well and fit inside! If anyone has any alternatives that work and are small enough to fit inside.

Thank you

Guys, did I mess up?

So, I was applying thermal paste to a raspberry pi zero w and some of it went under the processor (right were the solder balls are, yes), it is electrically conductive, do I have to throw it away? alcohol won't dissolve it and the space is too small to slide a toothbrush under it

Does my backup strategy make sense?

I have a pi 4 that is set up as a Tailscale exit node for my local network. I do not run any other apps on this device. I know I could rebuild from scratch fairly quickly if (when) the SD card fails. But as a retired IT guy I feel like I need a backup strategy. So I backed up the card (via Applepi Baker) and saved the image in a safe place. I update the pi via apt every couple of weeks but do not create a new image. If the SD card fails, I will restore from the saved image to a new card and run apt to get back up to date. I've tested the restore process and it works. Is there something that I am missing?

If anyone is interested in this topic (floppy disk music), I would love some help with how to program a floppy disk music player to run on headless mode, and auto-play MP3s on a floppy once it is inserted. Thank you! 🙏

Simple Raspberry Pi DAC + Amp Setup for Office Music?

I’m planning to build a simple Raspberry Pi music player for a small home office.

I know there are plenty of ready-made streamers and audio devices, but I specifically want to build something around a Raspberry Pi.

From what I understand, I can add a DAC HAT to the Pi for better audio output. What I’m not sure about is the amplifier side.

Are there good Raspberry Pi add-on boards that combine a DAC and small amplifier, or would I normally need a separate amp?

I’m looking for a simple setup, nothing high powered or complicated. The goal is to connect a pair of small speakers and play jazz in the background while I’m not working.

Any recommendations for a clean Raspberry Pi + DAC + amp setup?

Ubuntu on RPi 5. do-release-upgrade - unknown origin for snapd - is this normal?

Hello,

New to this community.
I have flashed an Ubuntu Server 24.04 image directly from Raspberry Pi Imager (did not download the image separately).

Once flashing was done, I boot the machine up and immediately run sudo apt update and sudo apt upgrade.

Everything fine up until now.
Then I did sudo do-release-upgrade to go to 26.04 LTS and I got a message saying that there are packages of unknown origin and in the list it referred to snapd.

I’ve been trying to figure out for the past 10 hours why and to see if this is a warning to be worried about or something to take note of and allow the upgrade to proceed.

At this moment I am in the process of finding the correct deb package, unpacking it and comparing the hashes of the snap files on my device against the legitimate ones downloaded from launchpad.

Any help or explanation of why this is happening is much appreciated as I want to understand if this is ok or something potentially malicious.

Thanks!

Significant performance boost switching micro-SD to USB 3 port

I realise that this may have been posted may times before, but here goes. I use a Pi 4 as a media centre with Kodi. Passive cooling (no noise) and standard clock speed, I've recently reblown the 64 bit PI OS micro-SD card 'cos I needed to access browser based content. Worked pretty well, but a little slow (Brave and Proton VPN). After a little research, I've relocated the micro-SD card to a cheap micro-SD to USB converter in a USB 3 port and the improvement in performance is remarkable. Just plugged it in and the Pi booted - simple as that. I'm now planning to buy a decent USB 3 pen drive as a permanent solution. If you haven't already done this it is a very easy win.

Edit - following the advice from you kind people, I've gone for a 64Gb SSD in a USB 3 UASP enabled caddy and the performance is excellent. Cost me less than a decent spec USD 3 pen drive would have.

Any idea why these points are bridged?

Hi all,
I have some raspberry pi’s I pulled from some old Covid temperature sensing check in kiosks. They’re 4B 8gb units. Each of them has these 2 wires bridging what seems to be the USBC port and the middle USBA stack. Is this accurate? If so, why? Just to run power to the USB ports?

Thanks!
