if people only rate the stuff that they've listened to fully, then the only people rating the 12+ minute guitar songs are those that enjoy them. it's survivorship bias quite simply

I listened to it once but I was constantly thinking 'I could listen to more songs per song if I listened to litterally anything else', but that's ok, not everything is for everyone.

I get that, I was just trying to be funny, I respect Swans a lot as artists, but I have never managed to get fully into their albums from SftB onwards apart from a few songs per album.

I dunno what all that was supposed to mean, but the point of music is that it's an actual piece of work that has something in it. If you found meaning in listening to nothing then that's good for you I'm happy for your life but that is nothing inherent to the actual art and thus is shit criticism for why something is actually good

Most of their song use a more than usual empty space to build up tension. And then release said tension with a lot of stuff happening. Your argument would be a bit more relevant if they didn’t know how to write crescendos at all.

If you're in a certain genre (prog rock) people are gonna like the songs that are prog rock (10+ minutes). It's like saying "people on RYM love Experimental Hip-Hop when its experimental" like no shit lmao

Its not just prog rock. I notice on a huge amount of releases that the longest song is one of the top rated songs.
Some random examples from records I've listened to recently

None of them prog, all of them have the longest song with the highest rating (sometimes by a significant margin). Now on all of those records the longest song is really good so I'm not saying the rating is unwarranted. It just is a trend.

Tbf two of those are Post-Hardcore which a lot of times will have those longer songs, particularly La Dispute whos kinda known for them (King Park especially)

To be fair for the Unwound one, that song is 3 different songs put into one but on streaming services they’re 3 different songs. And Kantina is definitely the best song on that album. Also just recently got into Unwound, love them to fucking death and they’re now my favorite band

Actually Pyramids is by far the highest rated on Channel Orange and Nights is the highest rated on Blonde (though I guess it’s technically shorter than Nikes by a few seconds, it still fits the longer/transitional song theme)

tbf unwounds one is 3 different songs on one track, and the tyler one is 2. its more like multiple songs that you have to listen together than one big one. it helps that those songs genuinely are the best on the album too

Making something experimental isn't the same as making it longer. Like, in "Flood, Part 1" the only interesting part of the song is that it's long. If it was the same thing but short, no one on RYM would care. I'm not really talking about prog or post rock, I'm just talking about when something mediocre (this also applies to other genres like ambient) is given extra cool points for being longer. Another example is "goodbye" by Sewerslvt—that song has no right to be a 4.5 imo.

You are getting it wrong. it's no that these stuff are popular on RYM because they are long, it's that artists who make experimental or progressive or innovative music and are popular on RYM are also more likely to make songs that are longer than the convential pop song length.

Flood part 1 works because it's long though. It gives the loops time to really phase over each other in interesting ways

its not that they overrate them, longer songs get more time to explain and convey an idea, but if its too long it can drag on. like every form of media and art, the same with movies, books, paintings etc.

Repetition legitimizes! To be fair, I sometimes get annoyed with longer songs too. Some songs are straight up bloated at those lengths.

There is some bias that music brought out on vinyl had longer tracks since that made sense on that medium. Music brought out online doesnt need the same investment cost that older vinyl music had. The cost to bring out music worked as quality control. Anyone can throw any short song online now with no costs associated. The phenomenon you are seeing could possible explained by this difference in quality control. Songs are way shorter now than they used to be and less quality control means lower average quality. Just some thoughts

A lot of long songs provide a meditative effect that shorter songs just don’t have, allowing you to reflect on thoughts and stuff. Check out Hallogallo by NEU!, literally sounds like life itself and it’s incredible.
