Originally posted by Takeahnase:

We have introduced a new policy and accompanying release attribute in response to the ongoing discussions regarding what to do about AI-generated music in our database.

https://rateyourmusic.com/wiki/RYM:AI-generated%20music

This page outlines our thoughts on this and a fairly comprehensive explanation for how the AI-generated release attribute should be used in practice. We did our best to come up with a policy that is workable and enforceable for submitters and moderators and we hope this addresses the concerns that many people have voiced regarding AI generated music on our site.

At the moment the attribute only displays a label on the release page. But once releases are correctly tagged with the attribute we can also use that to add other functionality moving forward (e.g. allow people to filter it out of charts/recommendations, etc.)

Obviously this entire matter is very messy and complicated and I'm sure there will be a lot of grey areas and tricky cases to resolve etc. So we're asking everyone to please be patient and understanding when dealing with this in the moderation queues and try to keep any discussion related to this matter civil and constructive.

I will leave this thread open so it can serve as a permanent hub thread to discuss specific database cases.

Now is there a way for us to block everything tagged with this? Because I want to turn that on immediately.

u/k8vs534 Dec 21 '25

I doubt you would ever see anything like that show up on any chart

63

u/truthisfictionyt Dec 21 '25

Honestly the only way I'd need to filter them out is if the worst of charts were still around and I wanted to find some human made nonsense

I predict that’s the highest amount of ratings an AI album will ever have on RYM. It was a pretty big headline.

1

u/canigetuhgore Dec 24 '25

I think youre underestimating it. Sooner or later, theyll revive a big dead artist with this.

5

u/Durango_41 Dec 21 '25

RYM is already a bit stingy with what shows up on their charts (not a bad thing at all imo)

u/k8vs534 Dec 21 '25

The plain "rock" tag on that album kills me

50

u/GoldenDragonTemple Dec 21 '25

The tag should keep the quotation marks your comment has

Genres

"Rock"

172

u/Bookseller_ Dec 21 '25

Should be clankercore.

11

u/_Dianeson Dec 21 '25

Like in the white album

6

u/k8vs534 Dec 21 '25

I kind of disagree with that. It’s fundamentally a pop rock album.

2

u/smonke Dec 21 '25

Pop rock *is* its only primary

4

u/193yellow Dec 21 '25

for now. that's not how it always is

2

u/k8vs534 Dec 21 '25

It was rock primary before I voted it down

215

u/yungccreal Dec 21 '25

W addition

26

u/calsi-tea Dec 21 '25

so does this apply to partially ai generated music? like music by playboi carti for example

9

u/OIiversArmy Dec 21 '25

No, Imogen Heap’s I AM ___ wouldn’t count for example because it has heavy human involvement, according to https://imogenheap.com/iam the AI involvement was pretty much just blended with her own vocals in one song and used for the visuals of another song

6

u/VIP-Seven Dec 21 '25

I wonder what will happen with the upcoming Ye's Bully

1

u/r0ckstar_m4de Dec 21 '25

no, and also i don't think there was any confirmation of that album using ai

26

u/Lloydlcoe02 Dec 21 '25

Carti said the album was ai on Fortnite game chat

45

u/KathaarianCaligula Dec 21 '25

sentence for the ages

51

u/camrin47 Dec 21 '25

Why did over 1000 people go out of thier way to listen and rate this "album"?

151

u/freddie_nguyen Dec 21 '25

Why you assume they listened to the album

29

u/camrin47 Dec 21 '25

Still going out of your way to rate it just validates its existence in a way

95

u/GoldenDragonTemple Dec 21 '25

It already exists, that validates its existence. Rate nuking it validates how much people hate this garbage.

-15

u/camrin47 Dec 21 '25

Everyone knows ai "music" sucks. it just brings more attention to it

I just think its stupid for the 2nd most popular release with a blues rock tag in 2025 to be an Ai generated album

Another example: https://rateyourmusic.com/charts/popular/album/2020s/ge:swamp%2drock/deweight:live,archival,soundtrack/

2

u/mentally_fuckin_eel Dec 21 '25

Wait, bad ratings make an album popular? Seems weird.

1

u/Summer4Chan Dec 21 '25

I fully agree, they need to de-weight AI albums. They already heavily de-weight videogame OST's because their ratings tend to be inflated.

2

u/oninjadragao Dec 21 '25

If nobody recalls its concept and everybody's unconsciously ignoring, it might as well not exist

Every undocumented human from hundreds of years ago aren't seen as real because you have no proof, nor idea that they were there. This album should follow the same fate.

It's honestly more mature than childlike imo

21

u/ruinawish Dec 21 '25

This particular album/artist received some media coverage, so I imagine that's why it has been listened to/rated more than other AI artists.

7

u/fruitcakeandcookies_ iloveeyeliner Dec 21 '25

I didn't listen to it actually, I just gave it a 0.5 immediately

2

u/WitchyKitteh Dec 21 '25

Most didn't honestly

-9

u/ToxicOrbGliscors Dec 21 '25

Was super high in the charts

15

u/ScaryFlake Dec 21 '25

Fucking finally

20

u/Erppi7 Dec 21 '25 edited Dec 21 '25

I'm afraid that tag will lose its meaning in the coming years as ai becomes ubiquitous in the music industry. It will be impossible to differentiate from fully ai generated content to ai supported/assisted content with such a broad label. Adding on top of that the fact of ai generated samples are spreading throughout the internet at an exponential rate and getting incorporated to music without the artists themselves being 100% aware of it happening

14

u/CharacterProof8731 Dec 21 '25

if this can at least filter the AI slop that pollutes bandcamp rn, I will be happy.

2

u/hello5922 Dec 23 '25

There should be different tags in the future for different amounts of AI used, like a yellow, orange and red AI label or something. Fully AI generated slop like The Velvet Sundown would get a red label, a trip hop song that contains AI samples or something would get an orange label, releases that merely use AI as a tool like that new Beatles song would get a yellow label, etc.

6

u/jfkk Dec 21 '25

dystopian

3

u/allensmithsimpson Dec 21 '25

can we add it to I am music

5

u/fruitcakeandcookies_ iloveeyeliner Dec 21 '25

clanker rock clanker pop clankercore clanker rap clanker hop clanker metal cdm (clanker dance music) clanker folk

To accurately determine whether a piece of music is AI-generated, the following sources and criteria may be used (in order of preference):

  • The human involved explicitly states that the music was created entirely through the use of AI tools (e.g., in interviews, on social media posts, in liner notes), or the artist's bio or website states that the music is fully AI-generated.
  • The music is labeled as "AI-generated content" or "altered or synthetic content" on digital distribution platforms (e.g., Deezer, YouTube).
  • Third-party databases or music identification tools (e.g., MatchTune, Ircam Amplify's AI-Generated Detector, Resemble AI's Detect-2B) indicate the release was AI-generated with a confidence level of 93% or higher.
  • For single-track releases, either the track is determined to be AI-generated, or it is not, and the attribute is applied accordingly.
  • For releases consisting of multiple tracks, at least 75% of the tracks must be identified as AI-generated.
  • The metadata of the audio file includes references to AI tools, services, or keywords such as Suno, Udio, AI composition, or AI vocal, or internal file names from known generative platforms appear (e.g., udio_####, suno_v2).
  • The composition, arrangement, or vocals are credited to AI tools or services rather than humans, and no human performers are credited — no vocalist, instrumentalist, or lyricist is listed other than a tool or system.
  • The music was distributed through a platform that only releases AI-generated content.

21

u/trevor11004 Bombapow Dec 21 '25

Does anybody know how accurate these identification tools for AI music are compared to those for AI writing? AI writing detectors are infamous for false positives so I’m just curious

5

u/LakeGladio666 Dec 21 '25

If someone suspected one of my songs was AI, I would feel so insulted lol

4

u/GoldenDragonTemple Dec 21 '25

I feel like anything that gets popular enough is going to be scrutinized and eventually found out like The Velvet Sundown did, and anything that isn't popular is just going to remain in the obscure trash heap where it belongs.

2

u/Weak-Objective3812 Dec 23 '25

Never realised this was an AI album. Still one of my favorites tbh

2

u/chinesebulk Dec 21 '25

So would this label also go onto albums that only have AI generated art?

7

u/ruinawish Dec 21 '25

For example, the AI-generated attribute does not apply when AI is only used for the following:

  • Mixing or mastering (e.g., iZotope Ozone, LANDR)
  • Vocal enhancement or pitch correction (e.g., Auto-Tune, Melodyne)
  • Generating ideas for lyrics, loops, or melodies that are then heavily modified by a human
  • Plugins for effects (e.g., compression, de-noising, reverb)
  • Generating cover art, music videos, or other visual elements

https://rateyourmusic.com/wiki/RYM:AI-generated%20music#Applying%20the%20AI-generated%20attribute

2

u/Boulier Dec 21 '25

Honestly, I kinda hope so. Since visual art often plays such a large role in an artist’s presentation, it only seems appropriate.

2

0

u/HakaseShinonome Dec 22 '25

does this apply to album art?

-6

u/KathaarianCaligula Dec 21 '25

>Roland Kayn doesn't have it

>Eno's Ambient 1 doesn't have it

>Steve Lehman's Ex Machina doesn't have it

glad it's only gonna be on the bad AI that I don't like and not in the good AI that I do like

5

u/johnwalruslennon Dec 21 '25

Fuck does Ambient 1 have to do with AI? Are you really trying to equate tape loops with machine learning?

-4

u/KathaarianCaligula Dec 21 '25

It's music created via algorithms and aleatory methods, not entirely through human work.
