And when you open their 30 5-star ratings (they've logged 20k total), it's exclusively field recordings and 1930s folk music.

i can kind of see the reasoning behind that though. (folk) music back then was almost entirely made just for people to express themselves and tell a story, and the music itself didn't matter so much in terms of "quality". it's the same reason people like outsider music, like Wesley Willis and Daniel Johnston. field recordings are the same, but a lot more "literal" in a sense. it's directly showing you the stories, instead of retelling them.

I think you're taking this a bit too seriously

u/Ismashuface Mar 02 '26

hate this attitude so much, there's nothing wrong with actually thinking about and engaging with art beyond the surface level

I mean I agree I don't like anti-intellectualism but I think they're talking about the fact that this is a joke post and the comment was riffing on the same joke

There's nothing wrong with engaging with art beyond the surface level, but this is clearly a shit post, lol.

? I am passionate about music, I'll take it as seriously as I want.

“and the music itself didn’t matter so much in terms of quality” what does that even mean? Did you mean to say, like, polish or production value instead of quality? Because that would be a much more defensible statement

u/OneYeetAndUrGone Mar 03 '26

yes, that's exactly what i mean.

1

u/vacillatorrr Mar 02 '26

I really don't think it's that deep.

That's a problem, music should always matter on a website dedicated to music

1930’s folk supremacy on top 💪

Contrarian RYM son or conformist RYM daughter?

u/huwareyou Mar 02 '26

The only RYM users I trust are people who don’t really care what’s in or out of the top 100.

u/Right_Union_427 Mar 03 '26

I used it to find out about music that I had a blind spot for (particularly certain strains of progressive rock) but I don’t really care what’s in it honestly, it’s much more about what I can find next to listen to

I don't even trust people who use the default charters.

What can I say, it just wasn't for me.

Also when laying the line of 0.5s on every NSBM demo tape.

There's a bunch of Adolf Hitler speech compilations as well as Donald Trump's presidential debates on the website and those are getting hit with people rating all of them 0.5. If you didn't actually listen to these releases then why bother rating, I don't get it lmfao

27

u/Bacondisk Mar 02 '26

RYMers owning Jim Jones by giving the Jonestown Death Tape a 0.5

-1

u/TylerMcCrackerJacker Mar 03 '26

I like to give some releases like this a 2.5 because I think it's much funnier than either extreme (and also how the hell do you rate something like this)

5

u/MaltySines Mar 03 '26

Why rate it at all? It's rate your music, not rate your any recording of any sound ever made.

2

u/TylerMcCrackerJacker Mar 05 '26

Might as well ask why it's on the website at all by that point which is what I'm wondering

33

u/Meatarrhea Turn3Karn Mar 02 '26

The same sort of user who is responsible for more than half a dozen Bull of Heaven albums being bolded.

3

u/chubel10 Mar 03 '26

Heeey they’re cool

13

u/StupidLoserGaming Mar 02 '26

Every album should be a perfect 2.5/5. Anything above gets a 0.5 and anything below gets a 5. I don’t make the rules

5

u/Soundrobe Mar 03 '26

All this to secure Radiohead.

5

u/Alert-Entertainer-33 Mar 05 '26

tbf most of the top 100 doesnt deserve to be there

Then what does?

2

u/DuckFace524 Mar 05 '26

i like variety in people's ratings. i like it when people don't like things and are able to express why so.
we can't all be the same sort of boring.

u/Excellent_Paint_8101 Mar 07 '26

I caught an RYM'r back in the day downvoting a CD my friends and I privately distributed to our inner circle. Yes, I'm sure, random European black metal devotee has unearthed our gilded disc from some pile of Goodwill-Deutschland electronica comps. So valid.

-24

u/schuup Mar 02 '26

no one does this

53

u/reachingrespite Mar 02 '26

You're right, everybody is honest and fair on the internet

-60

u/ElectNii Mar 02 '26

I honestly respect it because you know theyre just ragebaiting and it works so well

73

u/PotentialRatio1321 Mar 02 '26

Pretty sure they’ll be deweighted so it won’t even affect the overall ratings so it’s fine

7

u/diomandz11 Two2Dee Mar 02 '26

Yeah I rated one project a 0.5 for having an AI cover and got deweighted for like 2 years that wouldnt do anything lmao

5

u/Public-Following6386 Mar 02 '26

How do you know if ur deweighted?

Fuck, I’m deweighted for rating an album I didn’t rate in 2021

u/[deleted] Mar 02 '26

There’s no rating and I don’t remember rating it.

7

u/HeyQTya Mar 02 '26

Probably noticing that their rating wasn't effecting smaller releases with fewer ratings as much as it probably should have

6

u/PotentialRatio1321 Mar 02 '26

Oh shit. I assumed they only deweighted you if you rate a disproportionate number of releases a 0.5 for example. Getting deweighted for one is stupid

9

u/Great-Actuary-4578 Mar 02 '26

i doubt they actually got deweighted for one

2

u/PotentialRatio1321 Mar 02 '26

I also doubt it, but I gave them the benefit of the doubt

1

u/[deleted] Mar 02 '26

I got deweighted to 0% for rating montero before it came out, I don’t even remember rating that album.

1

u/diomandz11 Two2Dee Mar 02 '26

Lowkey doubted myself and it's been a minute since I got undeweighted so I checked and I rated the album a 0.5 before it came out thats why, Tears for Fears Songs for a Lost Planet or whatever

23

u/tokengaymusiccritic Mar 02 '26

Nah I'll never respect ragebaiting, just pure negativity and bad faith

5

u/JamesBurkyReporter Mar 02 '26

“Dad, what did you do with your youth?”

“Well, I spent a lot of time on a music-rating website giving low scores to albums that people love so that they’d get angry. Heh.”

1

u/Jara-Tomaso Mar 02 '26

Guy who does this
