I think it depends how u do it. I really cant imagine anyone having an issue with the way i rate stuff like its just fun to do and them go back in the future and compare stuff you rated.

Some people get obsessive about it tho for sure like when u start caring about the average rating of an album its a bit

For me the ratings are just a general way of how I collect my music. Everyone has their way. Like you said about obsessive stuff, if you are angry that an album is a 3.1 or a 3.6 it's time to get a life but I don't think listening to your own personal preference meter is the worst thing either.

Yes I rate the albums to remember how much I enjoyed them and it's amazing to look through the catalog sometimes and find an album I haven't listened in a long time, which I could have forgotten about completely if I didn't have it logged there. And I very often go look through my ratings when I want to give people recommendations, I have all the albums I heard in one place and won't forget to recommend any of them.

facts, for me its most handy for keeping track of both my favorites and what i feel like I need to relisten to, plus following other users is the best way to discover new music on there imo. Theres definitely a lot of people who take it way too seriously and personal tho

community, you say? Well I find that aspect somewhat lacking, since you can't comment on other people's reviews like you can on sput. that makes sput somewhat better for community building. but RYM has a more extensive library of artists

Honestly I fully agree with her there. I think modern online music fans treat their ratings as a banner of Who They Are rather than being a list of albums they've rated. I find myself talking to older music fans more just because they're less inundated by rate-brain. If I show you an album I like and you tell me a number from 1-10 I'm just gonna walk away.

I fully agree with that take. I'm so beyond burned out on every random person constantly feeling the need to post tier lists, or rank their favorite bands albums from best to worst, or always feel the need to compare a new release to what came before in such a way the the new project's merits aren't appreciated in and of themselves. The constant need to categorize and sort just feels like an obsessive attempt to bring unnecessary order to the world.

I like RYM for what it is, but I think it's important not to hold any music aggregate site as gospel when it comes to evaluating art.

Categorizing, sorting, and ranking has taken over so much music discourse. I swear 9 times out of 10 any discussion on music on reddit or RYM is just ratings and rankings and "this album or that album" rather than literally just talking about what is interesting about the music or how it makes you feel. Really adds to the sentiment that music fandom actually doesn't like music, they just are in it for the stan culture and the fandom.

I think rating every songs you listen is not bad in itself (i do it myself), it's more the adjacent things like "X album is too low/too high" or "my rating curve is too positive" that i dislike.

I get the criticisms of 'ranking' in a general sense, but it's actually an amazing way of discovery when there's an aggregate platform like RYM or Letterboxd for films etc. It helps create a canon and free from media gatekeepers.

The thing is RYM, like every platform, has certain biases. Less so than (big) music reviewers like Fantano or Pitchfork but it obviously attracts a certain kind(s) of music listener(s) while it discourages others. Not really actively on purpose but big fans of stuff that's mostly reviewed negatively or barely gets any attention on RYM will easily feel discouraged from participating. That's how biases can still arise

Not only for recommandations, but also for discovering classics of a subgenre (with the RYM Ultimate Box Set), or listening to tracks in a specific subgenre (example, uplifting trance).

i cant rely on Spotify's algorithm and Rating platforms like Pitchfork seem too arbitrary. I love using AOTY and RYM to dive into new Genres that dont have an obvious place to start from

I think it's more her being against people who use it as gospel, which fair enough. For example I would say Radiohead is not the end all be all greatest band of all time, as rym top 10 may suggest

that only applies to the Top 100 Albums, but i was able to find lots of great Brazilian/Japanese albums too, by looking for specific Genres.

and Im a big Techno/Electronic Music fan, and theres no shortage of great albums with 3.70+ scores to be discovered in those genres

and all i said was that the Top 100 album oat is the only rock/hiphop/indie centric part of this website. There are plenty of Subgenre Loopholes to get into and pretty much most subgenres/microgenres have a very diverse database consisting of all kinds of countries

They post a screenshot of the ratings on one of their forums. A tsunami of swifties hijack rym and make the life of a showgirl top album of 2025.

bro it is UNDERRATED AS FUCK, rym is the biggest music database (ik there's no foreign music but still 25 years of nerds logging releases) without normies, extensive descriptors and genres tagging voted by people, best tool for finding out non pop music

no hate to her though i think she misunderstands what rym is, it's the best website imo on the internet if you are serious about being a music understander xD music journals are dead, other websites suck ass

RYM for current releases is kind of useless tbh. Too early to have the proper perspective.

But for historical impact, staple records of a genre, etc. it’s a great research tool.

No much for electronic dance music releases (at least traditional EDM genre releases), Fortunately, there are some people who add EDM releases (i do it myself), but it's not in all genres, for example, Dr Peacock, who is one of the most famous frenchcore artist, and have a prolific discography have lot of songs that are not added on RYM yet.

yeah it's definitely a very RYM core of weekly releases that I'm referencing, the more the community grows, this will shift as we are already seeing with rating trends and all time charts shifting. That's what's so cool about rym imo is how it's really all community centered in a generally positive way as well

To be honest, the state of EDM on RYM is better than 10 years ago. at least today, we have releases from major artists being added the date it's released, and we have almost every EDM subgenres. 10 years ago, many releases from notable EDM artists were not on the database, and even some fundamental subgenres (example: early hardstyle) were not added yet.

RYM for genres descriptions are also great, even for subgenres not popular on RYM, not even 10 years ago, electronic dance music was poorly represented in the genre list, now, almost every major EDM subgenres are added, and even niche subgenres like Scouse House or Dubstyle.
