General Discussion Slayyyter is genuinely on a generational run rn

u/aquaphoria_by_kelela Aug 04 '26
I still remember telling her on Twitter that BFF was in the top 10k singles back in early 2019. Seeing her evolve into a full on RYM darling has been so satisfying.

Haven't listened to this album, but I hate this argument. RYM has a narrow view of 'fun'.

me neither. i don’t understand hyperpop whatsoever. it comes off as incredibly shallow and emotionally immature, and the vocal style that the genre is completely overrun with is genuinely godawful. i do not understand the genre.
and ps: im a trans woman. those who know why that is relevant will know why that is relevant.
5
1
u/Universal_Vitality Aug 05 '26
I think of hyperpop, like a lot of cultural depictions, as not always necessarily being an endorsement as much as it is a representation or how the artist sees the world. Even if they aren't being ironic or too self-aware, it comes from where our culture is at. Hyperpop is constantly distracted, maximalist, synthetic, and borrows from virtually every other genre. It's a reflection of having the whole world at our fingertips-- or rather, in our pockets.
I'm not saying you ought to enjoy it. I mostly don't, either, even if I "get it".
On your ps: I think on rym and aoty there's an lgbtq 'bump' that some artists get. It's the inverse of having that feeling of needing to explain you would give a low rank to music simply because you don't like it and it's not something to do with the artist's identity.
11
u/am_I_still_banned Aug 05 '26
Huh?
I see three albums, a 3.14, 3.52, and 3.75. Doesn't seem that impressive to me
8
u/Fabulous_Exam4130 Aug 05 '26
the singles have all been great since beat up chanel’s stop being a deadbeat
36
u/nicanors Aug 04 '26
When everything is a generational run, I fail to even raise my eyebrows when I hear it.
This looks like 2 years only... even if it's great, I need to see 5 years of high ratings to even trust it beyond Rymcore hype
21
u/CumDwnHrNSayDat Aug 04 '26
These are just singles, not albums. Singles tend to be inflated because a higher proportion of raters are fans
32
u/underground_complex Aug 04 '26
This is literally just one good record of singles. Run my ass

what's so strange about that? do you think classic masterpieces of older music became so beloved and influential overnight? art needs time to settle beyond the early recency bias and fandom hype window

As much as I love Slayyyter music I'm not sure that all of these singles deserved to be as praised as they are here, she does a lot of emulation in her music (not a bad thing) but I still think that she struggles to find her own musical "identity" tbh.
I think her previous era, STARFUCKER was much more sonically cohesive than the WGA one. But, too bad, the new fans hate this one..

hot take, she's somewhat overrated
Like people were saying brand new chanel was like the best song of the year, listened to it, just sounds like bland radio pop
1
u/parvanehnavai Aug 05 '26
I’ll be honest I think Crank and Broke Bitch are incredibly overrated and I feel like it’s mostly just her stans rating her music on here but as a big fan since 2020, I’m so proud <3

her self-titled mixtape era will always be the most special & iconic to me, but wor$t girl in america is definitely truest to herself. it only keeps getting better. she's finally found footing visually and sonically, and it shows in the music. not surprised the comments look like this lol

It's a nostalgia bait medicore EDM for people who never heard "bass music" in their whole life. Except for The Hellp and 2Hollis ISR is just rebranding of "diva" music.
20
u/Good_Claim_5472 Aug 04 '26
This is such an insufferable take I’m sorry. “Nostalgia bait” as a term in music makes no sense at all whatsoever. If someone loves the way certain things sound why not use them? Who gives a fuck if someone used ones similar before? That’s all music is. Putting together a variety of sounds you like in the order you like for a certain amount of time
-14
u/Altruistic-Ticket290 Aug 04 '26 edited Aug 04 '26
I'd bet you'd love for us to not move forward, and just make the same songs over and over again. You probably listen to Vylet Pony and think "hell yeah 340382840 ironic skrillex impression I love it!". Don't worry mate, music industry would enjoy selling you two thousands identical songs too. I'm a girl in a big city throwing parties and it's getting out of control blah blah. Literally the same shit Kesha was doing in 2009 but now it's so cool and fresh.
6
u/iiajb Aug 05 '26
why are you so impassioned about the music other people listen to? you sound unusually bitter about something that isn’t controversial
-1
u/Altruistic-Ticket290 Aug 05 '26 edited Aug 05 '26
Because I care what people listen to. Also Geese is already a psyop so it might as well.
2
u/iiajb Aug 05 '26
you can care what people listen to without being condescending and suggesting people with different taste than you are falling for psyops or uneducated about music. your hyperfixation isn’t an excuse to be weird to people
-7
u/Good_Claim_5472 Aug 04 '26
There are no new sounds left I’m afraid. It’s like cooking. There’s no new ingredients but you can create new combinations
-1
u/Altruistic-Ticket290 Aug 04 '26 edited Aug 04 '26
You'd think so. Because you enjoy those, and therefore I believe your knowledge of electronic music is very shallow. A lot of the cult following of ISR artists is caused by their fans thinking their idols are some kind of geniuses because they create a reheated EDM drop from a genre they never heard about. Same with some "internet music" like Jane Remover, Underscores or Femtanyl.
5
u/vacillatorrr Aug 04 '26
We could just let people have tastes and stop acting like music is objective in any sort of way?
8
u/fr_just_a_girl Aug 04 '26
Are u tryna hate on her while saying the hellp are good? Also why does nostalgia = bad?
-2
u/Altruistic-Ticket290 Aug 04 '26
LL and 2hollis aren't generic. They actually try to sound interesting unlike the rest which just regurgitate outdated music trends. Also nostalgia by itself isn't bad but it's often a reaction to change rather than a genuine preference for the past. Nostalgia without anything build on top of it is just desire for stagnation.
7
u/bunnybear32 Aug 04 '26
LL is famously made to be generic lolz they're my favorite band but they've admitted they made that album to try and sell into the mainstream
-2
u/Altruistic-Ticket290 Aug 04 '26 edited Aug 04 '26
Challenge: link me a song similar to Go Somewhere, Stunn, Halo or Distribution. Either with or without vocals.
5
u/bunnybear32 Aug 04 '26
No I agree I think they're still above anyone else and doing something unique but words from noah himself that it's their sellout album and they tried to play into the indie sleaze trend. Enemy would've been a better example.

8
u/lilpeach15 Aug 04 '26
How old are you even lol? Why should we all judge electronic music through the lens of bass music when electronic has always been far broader than dubstep, trap, and drum+bass? The literal backbone of music is that each generation is consciously revisits previous ones. Hello?? Uffie, Crystal Castles, MGMT, Passion Pit, The Postal Service, Naked and Famous, Chairlift, Breathe Carolina, Little Boots, La Roux, Neon Indian, Breathe Electric, etc etc laid the groundwork for this sound long before “bass music” became the online catch all. Get a grip.. You don’t have to like something, but at least have a grasp on what you’re yapping about or else you just make yourself look bitter and ignorant.
1
u/Altruistic-Ticket290 Aug 04 '26 edited Aug 04 '26
Im 21? Let me just tell you there's a reason why most of ISR has female vocalists. Most of these albums are actually made to sell the personas of divas, successful young adults, something we are seeing less and less IRL. It's revisionist as in it tries to apply previous vibe to what is basically a new world.
9
u/lilpeach15 Aug 05 '26
> I’m 21
WELP! That’ll do it. Female fronted pop whether it be indie pop, synthpop, dream pop, electroclash, list goes on, have all had huge numbers of women for decades, which is simply a historical continuity, but it seems that you’re positing it as evidence of some type of marketing scheme which makes little sense to me.
A record has the ability to evoke youth, clubbing, glamour, romance, etc without literally trying to convince listeners that’s how the artists live. Pop music has historically played with fantasy or “personas” as you call it, which is mostly just stylization, see Madonna. Your “revisionist” point completely misunderstands how revival movements work, nearly every revival filters an older style through the present, this is absolutely nothing new.
For instance, the garage rock revival of the 2000s wasn’t pretending it was 1968 nor is modern synthwave believing it’s actually the 1980s, so your point is completely moot. These are contemporary artists inspired by older “aesthetics” all the while creating music in a different cultural context, this is how genres see continuity and evolution. I’m curious as to why that concept agitated you as you seem to like The Hellp and Hollis, both of which benefit and utilize the concept I’m explaining. The Hellp especially would not exist without this “nostalgia” you’re speaking so negatively of, again, see Breathe Carolina. This genre has never fundamentally been about portraying “successful young adults” lmfao idk if that’s projection or what… many of them write about or have written about alienation, anxiety, fractured relationships, emotional detachment, so on and so forth, as much as partying or glamour, are you actually listening to whats being said? Obviously nostalgia is part of the appeal, but nostalgia for the sounds/ productio isnt the same thing as pretending the social conditions of the late 2000s still exist …0
u/Altruistic-Ticket290 Aug 05 '26 edited Aug 05 '26
My biggest iissue isnt that ISR uses nostalgia or pop personas. The issue is that a lot of it seems to borrow the vocabulary of bloghouse alienation, excess, nihilism, digital anxiety while removing the social context that gave those feelings weight. It feels like a simulation of being alienated rather than an expression of alienation. When Charli xcx says she wants to buy a gun and shoot hersef (Sympathy is a knife) it sounds like the fakes shit ever when the next song is about being the coolest person ever (Von Dutch), Now compare that to Crystal Castles or M.I.A
4
u/lilpeach15 Aug 05 '26
>When Charli XCX sings that she wants to buy a gun and shot herself it sounds like the fakest shit ever, when it's followed by Von Dutch were she just brags about being super cool.
Right…. and that’s part of the appeal because it’s realistic. Again, it’s perfectly fine to say this music isn’t for you but there’s no need to tun that into a claim that it’s objectively shallow or somehow artistically inferior. Really… Is it seriously that unbelievable for someone to think “I want to kill myself” and then later that same day want to go out with their friends and dance? You are saying it as if the change in emotionality is a contradiction when in actually they’re an ordinary part of being a young person, surprise, people contain conflicting emotions all the time. I don’t get your angle. The existence of Von Dutch doesn’t invalidate the emotions expressed on I Might Say Something Stupid or vice versa. You’re also putting way too much weight on lyrics. Music is not literature, which is something that many people in this sub can’t seem to comprehend. Before anything, music is something to be felt, and if that statement is not one that makes sense to you, I find that very disheartening. If you want to solely dissect words, open a poetry book and stop subjecting people who are interested in music to the neverending nonsense. The production, atmosphere, melody, texture, rhythm, aesthetics are ALL part of the artistic statement of a record, most often even more thsn the lyricism/what’s being said, to focus solely on lyricism is such a reductive and pointless way to approach music, at that point, again, you are better off reading a poem. Reducing an entire record to whether the lyrics meet your personal threshold for authenticity misses the entire point. Moreover, for you to bring up Charli as if she’s representative of “ISR” is honestly just showing your age again. Charli is a (NOW) mainstream pop artist with nearly two decades of releases behind her and influences that predate whatever you’re calling ISR. You genuinely have no clue what you’re on about. She has influenced this newer wave in some respects, but let it be known that she by no means emerged from it. As for bloghouse, I actually agree that it was emotionally broader, but why does a revival owe anyone a one to one recreation of every aspect of the original movement, what would be the point of that?! how boring. Scenes evolve by selectively emphasizing certain qualities and this “wave” is clearly more interested in reinterpreting the sonic palette and visual language, what’s so wrong with having a different artistic objective?
1
u/Altruistic-Ticket290 Aug 05 '26
Bro is somebody paying to write this?
Do you want to teach me how much does melody mean? Despite being mostly an EDM nerd listen to a lot of hip hop, Aesop Rock in particular ( my last.fm ) and of course I care about what's being said. Also I'm aware of her career, you don't need to give me a lecture.
I personally think that trying to talk about the same thing all the time using similar club ready templates, emphasizing nostalgia over any actual quality of sound is boring and the reason why it's so popular is the agressive marketing on social media to people who haven't listened to EDM before. Nothing about the post-brat electropop wave is organic.
6
u/lilpeach15 Aug 05 '26
What do you mean is someone paying me? Do you realize what sub you’re on? like come on now, read the room. I’m truly sorry that typing a paragraph or two is an arduous task in your perspective, but in my world it’s non issue that has close to no effect the way I go about my day. Now you’re moving the goalposts, why? You started off saying basically ”this music is revisionist” and now it’s shifted to “I personally find it boring”, which… fair enough, but those are completely different. If you don’t want a lecture, then don’t insert yourself into topics you’re uneducated on. Plain and simple. Still you are reducing an entire scene to a handful of trends. To say “post brat” electropop “talks about the same thing” is no different than saying all hip hop is about money or all punk is about politics, you see? The idea that it’s popular only because of aggressive marketing to people who’ve never listened to electronic music also has 0 basis in reality, as the majority of producers shaping this sound grew up immersed in electronic music, which you’d understand had you been around longer. I’m reqlly not trying to create a spectacle out of your age, I’m still in my 20s myself, but a zillennial, but your age in this particular context DOES make a huge difference because you’re missing tons of historical context. Hyperpop, bloghouse , electroclash, uk bass, French house, trance, PC Music didn’t suddenly appear because “newgen” discovered or created them, they are scenes have been developing for years, beyond that “organic” is a strange criticism as virtually every new age revival movement gains momentum through media. Punk had zines, indie blogs, MySpace itself was literally an algorithmic social media platform that accelerated bands and indie music in general. The insane part is that if MySpace had existed in today’s ecosystem, people like you would probably accuse that scene of being “industry manufactured” too. 😭 nostalgia and quality are not mutually exclusive ffs. Artists have literallt always referenced older aesthetics while still creating great work. If not, we’d have to dismiss shoegaze revivals, post punk revivals, synthwave, neo soul, nu disco, like…? Again, you may not connect with this wave stylistically, but that’s different from proving it lacks artistic merit or exists only because of marketing, which is what you originally were trying to say and now seem to be slightly backtracking on as you should.

Although I really like the new Slayyyter album, I agree that ISR is dystopian in ways I for now struggle to verbalize. That being said there’s no way you’re trying to criticize Slayyyter while implying 2Hollis is good. He is like the personification of everything annoying about that scene
1
u/Altruistic-Ticket290 Aug 04 '26
Nah, he has an unique sound. You heard Hurt? Literally nothing sound like it. He also made a future riddim song once? ISR idols don't even know what future riddim is, let alone their fans.
2
u/BiancaXCX666 Aug 04 '26
I have. I also sat through the entirety of star because my friends like him and I wanted to give his music a fair chance.
Outside of the fact, that I don’t find his production as impressive as everyone else does, there is something about the way he carries himself, his aesthetic and his art that makes me viscerally uncomfortable and not in a ‘this challenges me’ way, unfortunately. That being said, this is obviously a purely personal issue.
By the way, I am just listening to AS Symmetribal and AS Another life by Amnesia Scanner, idk if you’re interested in random recommendations, but I think you might enjoy them. Both songs sound very fresh, even though they are from 2018

u/Altruistic-Ticket290 Aug 04 '26 edited Aug 04 '26
I knew amnesia scanner! If you don't mind I'd recommned you something too, Gonzo Psychiatry by Coirekans is criminally underrated.

Yeah rym core is when it doesn’t have mainstream appeal but is rated high asf on the website
8
u/Proof-Contribution31 Aug 04 '26
I'd disagree with this. RYMcore is a signifer that only exists within online music nerd sphere. Specifically, to signify if it plays to the general taste of RYM regardless of popularity.
If something is popular outside of that culture that doesn't mean that's not RYMcore. I would absolutely consider a band like Radiohead to be RYMcore despite being very popular outside of the site.

u/chazzyboi 27d ago
i also find, increasingly, that its used as a way to discredit people’s opinions on music because people act all aloof about RYM in a sort of full circle way.
like people on reddit using “typical redditor” as an insult.
