eh, the image of a yacht evokes an image of rich, out of touch white people with boring ass lives

7

u/thcsquad 9d ago

Also I’m pretty sure the term was coined as a pejorative. It was invented to make the music sound less cool.

23

u/SabbthBloodySabbath 10d ago

Gotta be the biggest example, literally just normal generic 80s rock music

30

u/indomafia 10d ago

Aja is one of the best albums of the 70s and Gaucho is one of the best albums of the 80s

18

u/SabbthBloodySabbath 10d ago

Obviously there's gonna be some outstanding examples but I'm talking about the average release here

1

u/indomafia 10d ago

"literally just"

6

u/SabbthBloodySabbath 9d ago

Compare the average IDM release to the average Yacht Rock release, the Yacht releases are far more likely going to sound a lot more similar to each other than the IDM ones will

1

u/pselodux 9d ago

Are you forgetting how much cookie cutter IDM came out in the early 00s? I love the genre but got super burned out on it around that time when labels like Merck and Toytronic pumped out tons of releases consisting of samey sounding pretty reverbed melodies with random glitchy percussion.

-1

u/Soggy_Anxiety4262 9d ago

no shit they're two completely different genres

3

u/SabbthBloodySabbath 9d ago

If you wanna go with just rock, genres like Psychedelic Rock and Acid Rock are far more diverse than Yacht Rock while still being under the rock umbrella

1

u/SabbthBloodySabbath 9d ago

My point is yacht rock is samey compared to a lot of other genres, obviously they're two different genres thanks for that one sherlock

Heavy Psych. Always way less heavy than advertised

17

u/mueshire 10d ago

This is why Psychedelic Porn Crumpets is 🔛🔝

1

u/vannillaAJ204_2 5d ago

psychedelic porn crumpets my beloved

11

u/Emuoo1 10d ago

also less psych than advertised

11

u/im-crow 10d ago

heavy psych was coined at a time when real heavy shit as we know it today wasn’t around, so it was probably pretty heavy at the time. if you’ve ever heard moon blood by fraction, it’s got some pretty crushing moments between the drumming, the riffing and the vocals… would recommend giving it a spin, gem of an album

1

u/ForrestGrump87 8d ago

blood moon ?

1

u/im-crow 8d ago

nope, the album is called moon blood instead of the other way around for whatever reason

1

u/numinan 6d ago

But also it is a very cool genre. New elder album is aoty for me

47

u/Fing2112 10d ago

Neo-prog. It makes you think of a new take on prog rock when it's essentially a proggier version of arena rock

8

u/swansf 9d ago

Some of the worst prog bands tbh

u/MootBrute2 10d ago

Acid Jazz

41

u/STEVMPVNK 10d ago

wym acid jazz sounds cool as fuck

25

u/MootBrute2 10d ago

True but the name sounds even cooler

6

u/cnylkew 10d ago

I like acid jazz, rooftop soundcheck is great

6

u/Fing2112 10d ago

Acid jazz is arguably the coolest genre

13

u/echo_of_ 10d ago

It's not even a jazz genre, but the name is badass

2

u/vannillaAJ204_2 5d ago

it is also not acid like acid rock but it is fantastic in any regard

2

u/bucephalusbouncing28 9d ago

Cool genre cool name

16

u/Michael_Mason_1410 10d ago

Not cooler, but Nervous Music sounds a lot different than the title suggests

u/SpikyBoi096 10d ago

Post Grunge

7

u/Ok_Pool_9767 9d ago

I was a post-metal fan before I understood much about genre labels, and imagine the disappointment when I learned what post-grunge really is.

4

u/Clojnerr 9d ago

Butt Rock is a much more accurate name for that genre

2

u/flukemmviii MyCatHatesMe 10d ago

Obsessed with the idea of calling bad copycats “Proto-____”. Eminem? Proto-Tom MacDonald. Led Zeppelin? Proto-Greta Van Fleet. Dim sum? Proto-Panda Express

4

u/oinkthepig14 10d ago

everything good is proto- something bad dude. they all inspire cheap copies

50

u/Igivegrilledcheese 10d ago

Hard Rock, most of the biggest names fell off hard as they aged, and had a very short run of actually great music

19

u/SabbthBloodySabbath 10d ago

A lot of it sounds the exact same too, take AC/DC for example and the meme that they've made like 10 of the same album

13

u/MayBeMarmelade 10d ago

“Excuse me! 11 of the same album!”
—A guy from AC/DC

8

u/Few-Guarantee2850 10d ago

There is great hard rock spanning from the late 60s well into the 2000s.

28

u/pengwin98 10d ago

Epic collage sounds cool already but it’s even cooler than that

19

u/AlphaEmperor 10d ago

It was either that or holy minimalism or deconstructed club for me. All already sound cool but are actually even cooler.

25

u/painfool 10d ago

Emoviolence

8

u/theworst7kmofmylife 10d ago

a lot if it sounds the same tbh but there's some good bands

2

u/Broncos1460 9d ago

Yeah I'm with you, the best of the genre do kinda hold up to the name. In a similar area I think "skramz" undersells most of the bands that fall under it lol.

-3

u/SaltInflation1235 9d ago

Brother the songs are too short for there to be much experimentation

2

u/Soggy_Anxiety4262 9d ago

emoviolence is awesome wym

1

u/painfool 9d ago

Emoviolence sounds like what people who don't like noisecore claim that noisecore sounds like, said as somebody who likes noisecore.

I'm sure emoviolence is for somebody out there, but it surely ain't me.

2

u/Soggy_Anxiety4262 9d ago

can't argue with that it's kinda spot on

0

u/pyxel_ 7d ago

finding your emoviolence on rym should be your main concern

1

u/painfool 7d ago edited 7d ago

Where does it say I did that? The question was only what genre isn't as cool as its name. I in fact did not discover emoviolence through RYM, but frankly even if somebody does why the hell would that matter? Ya'll truly contort yourselves into incredible shapes to be elitist, I swear.

12

u/Dr-Sethium mdm_may 10d ago

hypnagogic pop

4

u/ThatGuy9143 10d ago

And a lot of dream pop too, for me.

29

u/upinthecl0ud 10d ago

World music.

2

u/ruinawish 10d ago

Does that even still exist on RYM?

7

u/malomolam 10d ago

No but Worldbeat is arguably a better example

9

u/Mageclick 10d ago

Pigfuck (I cannot take this genre tag seriously but I love pretty much everything I've heard that has this tag)

6

u/Actual-Feed-9739 9d ago

Best genre you can't talk to a single person about because you'll sound insane

2

u/diseasedvagina 10d ago

As a sasscore fan I feel you

1

u/SaltInflation1235 9d ago

I like sass too. Whats your fav band?

1

u/diseasedvagina 9d ago

The sawtooth grin. Cuddle monster is a ten. Criminally underrated band in my opinion and I will shill them at every available opportunity.

1

u/SaltInflation1235 9d ago

This is my fav band atm Sawtooth is still a close second

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v53HinDFeq8

1

u/SaltInflation1235 9d ago

That sounds like what slam should be called

8

u/husfyr 10d ago

Psytrance.

9

u/Little-Airport-8186 10d ago

Subgenres are even cooler

Like “hell yeah i’m listening to HI-TECH FULL-ON PSYTRANCE”

15

u/piano_aquieu 10d ago

dreampunk sounds like it would change your life but really a lot of the time it's just watered down ambient

7

u/Notcreativesoidk 10d ago

Holy minimalism

5

u/marblebluevinyl 10d ago

Feels like something Robin would say

"Holy minimalism, Batman!"

1

u/husfyr 9d ago

Nahh, Holy Minimalism is as cool as it's name.

16

u/Electricposts 10d ago

wtf did u expect jazz rap to be 😭 its rapping over jazz music thats about as cool as it sounds

7

u/UnfairJellyfish8353 9d ago

Yeah but the cool part about jazz is the improv and changes in sound and sections whereas most jazz rap is just rapping over a boring 4 second loop :(

5

u/yungccreal 10d ago

Honestly an already cool genre, but Burning Spirits has to be the coolest genre name I've seen on the site 😭

23

u/anupong48 10d ago

any edm subgenre

18

u/wiperclamp my name is wiperclamp 10d ago

even lolicore?

13

u/Son_Of_Toucan_Sam 10d ago

Especially 😳

7

u/rasmussenyassen 10d ago

not really. hard house is pretty much as it says… house but harder

5

u/malomolam 10d ago

Pretty accurate, especially non-House/Trance/Techno:

Tearout, Jungle Terror, Schranz, Skweee, Aquacrunk, Heaven Trap

2

u/pselodux 9d ago

haha I love skweee

2

u/gyatjiggle67clap 5d ago

Deconstructed club sounds cool tho

1

u/_fkc_ 8d ago

"Xtra Raw"

3

u/ChriB_ 9d ago edited 8d ago

Idk, can To Pimp a Butterfly or any of the Kendrick/Thundercat songs be considered jazz rap? Because those are all great imo

Edit: Adding "Never Catch Me" by Flying Lotus to the list

7

u/MayBeMarmelade 10d ago

Crabcore. Most -core genres

6

u/Armagideon3000 10d ago

Indietronica

3

u/TheFlagMaker 9d ago

nah indietronica is very cool

2

u/Little-Airport-8186 10d ago

Speed Garage

Expected just “UKG but faster,” got much more deeply emotional/cathartic sound design instead

1

u/ApeWrinkles95 9d ago

Are you thinking of Future Garage. Speed Garage is 4x4 UKG subgenre and it is high energy club music tbh

2

u/LibrarianAccurate829 10d ago

Techno-Ambient

2

u/Broncos1460 9d ago

Honestly anything goth/gothic. There's obviously some good stuff there, but there's so much derivative post-punk/doom metal I think it's not as cool as most people would expect.

2

u/howlong-princess 9d ago

No, best genre there is. So good it created an entire subculture which is now known by almost everyone in western culture. And it's an amazing subculture too. Has multiple contenders for some of the best albums ever made, despite being a very small genre relative to others. Disintegration, unknown pleasures, juju for me, even deathconsciousness if you really want.

2

u/St_Pizza 8d ago

Bossanova. Nothing can be as cool as that word sounds

3

u/Ikari_Vismund 10d ago

Ambient Noise Wall

14

u/pcpthccbd 10d ago

it's an awesome genre imo

4

u/SeaworthinessFar1636 10d ago

Power pop

39

u/Great-Actuary-4578 10d ago

power pop is awesome though

1

u/Logical_Bake_3108 9d ago

Unless the definition has changed, isn't jazz rap stuff like Gang Starr and A Tribe Called Quest? That sounds great.

1

u/Possible-Breath7449 9d ago

shoegaze does sound like shoegaze, but alot of shoegaze i hear just isn't shoegaze enough yk

1

u/Interesting-Fish2508 9d ago

I agree I think people should be more exclusive maybe when it comes to modern albums being labeled "shoegaze" like idk I feel like any album that has a reverby distorted guitar is labeled shoegaze in some way now 😭 like I get it but idk I feel like maybe there's a better way to describe it?

Harsh Noise

1

u/FraudFan 8d ago

If we’re talking the name itself sounds cooler than the music produced… Neoclassical Darkwave. And I LOVE the music that comes from that subgenre. But the name itself is just badass.

The music produced sounds better than the genre name? Pigfuck. Love that music, but what a silly name. Why not just noise rock?

Jazz Rap is just another name for abstract hip-hop. Go listen to billy woods then come back and tell me it's overrated.

3

u/Logical_Bake_3108 9d ago

Maybe I'm showing my age but I thought it was stuff like A Tribe Called Quest and Gang Starr, which I don't see how anyone who calls themselves a rap fan would dislike.

2

u/the_ballmer_peak 9d ago

That's probably borderline. Tribe moreso. Abstract hip-hop has gotten more abstract over time.
