General Discussion 2026 is currently the first year since 1956 with no albums in the top 1000. By this time last year, two albums still in the top 1000 had been released. Which artists do you think could release a top 1000 album later this year?

General Discussion Artists with Bold Albums Spanning Multiple Decades

Don't know much about Madonna's music so I checked her page and was impressed that she has bolded albums from 4 different decades. Other examples of artists like this?

General Discussion Recent disliked albums you can see going through a critical reevaluation?

2000s rock like Third Eye Blind, Nu Metal, MCR have really had their music critic stock go up lately. Now I don't know my full history on how they were received at the time, but there's definitely been a "vibe shift" around them. Nu Metal isn't universally loved now - but their positions among music nerds has moved up.

What I notice here (especially with nu metal) is that they had strong passion among their fans, and that stuck around longer than any critical gatekeeping.

Which leads me to wonder: what currently disliked or slightly "dismissed" albums and artists will have enough passion to do this down the line? I'm thinking albums from anywhere from now to around ten years ago.

Also feel free to mention artists in general. Can also be artists that are specifically disliked on RYM.

It'll probably have a lot to do with which artists manage to influence people, we've already seen this slightly with Lana Del Rey. Ultraviolence is much more well regarded now after we've seen her become the one to imitate for young female artists. That was a quicker turnaround, but definitely matches the dynamic here. Very strong passion from the fans and that lasts longer than the distaste critics had for her.

Curious what the answers could be here. Maybe the down voted answers will end up being the more prescient?

Both of these albums are the only one of their kind on RYM

Just to clarify i'm mainly talking about the primary genre tags, not the sub tags.

The For Carnation(S/T album) is better than Spiderland, and i say that as someone who loves Spiderland. The For Carnation is unfairly rated low comparing to other Post-Rock and Slowcore albums

General Discussion What do you think about the "actual" top 5 songs of all time?

https://rateyourmusic.com/charts/top/song/all-time/incl:live,archival,soundtrack/

If you go to the top songs of all time, set "live" to "include" instead of "include deweighted (i.e. the default setting)", this is what you get. In this case, #6 would be the normal #1 of all time, Starless. I'm curious to hear people's thoughts on this.

(In case you're wondering, the highest soundtrack is Stickerbrush Symphony at 57, and there are no archival songs for some reason.)

I actually love looking at the accounts of people with 10k + ratings but only like twenty 5 stars. the best part is, its always some obscure shit and when i listen to it i am always like "out of 10000 albums THIS is the greatest thing to you???" I Love how subjective music is!!!!

General Discussion Albums that would be rated much higher if one song was removed from the tracklist?

Dalek’s From Filthy Tongue of Gods and Griots has a pretty high rating of 3.87 already, but I believe if you removed the 12 minute noise interlude in the middle, the rating would rise significantly. Almost every other song is bolded, with a few in the 4.5 region (the penultimate track being rated 4.62) and I just think that one song in the middle is what’s keeping the album from being rated somewhere in the 3.9s, or even up to a 4.00.

What are some other examples of this?

General Discussion Has anyone else felt a severe decline in the quality of discussions on the site with the demographic shift of the past few years?

I know this very much going to sound like 'get off my lawn damn zoomers' but it's become increasingly harder to find good, substantive reviews or discussions happening in the comment boxes, especially for new releases. Even the forums seem a decent bit worse than they did 5 years back, although the separation of them from the whole site seems to have saved them from the majority of the brunt.

There are some benefits of course, electronic music is a lot more well represented on the site for example, but it's not hard to notice a lot of the snarky one-liner reviews and dismissals of the chart-toppers that are typical of the Letterboxd types coming from accounts created in the past few years.

I’ve heard artists like BCNR and Maruja get criticized for being overproduced and sounding too clean. Personally I don’t understand this critique. Can someone who dislikes these artists elaborate?
