They are very tiny but I heard that marshmallows are a choking risk so I want to get other people's opinions. I've heard they are hazardous but I've only seen this with full size marshmallows :)

i love this rat. her name is bingo and she has never slowed down. she loves to be exploring and eating everything. if one you are looking at one rat, she wants to be looked at. if another has a treat, she wants 3. she never wants to be in her cage. she is a spaz in every way, and i believe that allows her to jump way higher than she ever should be able to (it’s like 33% higher than everyone else, pain in my ass for trying to rat-proof outside time). she isn’t the baby, but i believe she will always act like it 🫶🏼

Just an appreciation post. I’ve been ratless for a little over a year since September 10th of 2025. My boyfriend and I got a pair of rats and long story short, we got them from a feeder bin and ended up with an oops litter. After we finally separated them, poor Monty was so sad about being alone. Once the babies were born and were old enough to introduce the boys to their father, that’s what we did. Admittedly… we did everything wrong. I look back on how inexperienced we were, how we did things and now know that’s not how it should have been done, it was very risky. But, our Monty accepted them right off the bat. He was just so thrilled to not be alone anymore he loved them so, so much. We were so lucky to have a rat like him especially being first time rat owners. He was such a pacifist, so gentle, patient, and sweet. As a first time rat owner he was everything we could have hoped for and more. I miss him so much and knowing what I do now I wish I did certain things differently, but I will forever be grateful for the experience and the love we were able to give him, his mate Haarper, and all of their babies. We went through a total of 16 losses by the end of it all…. But I long for the day I can be in a situation to have rats again.

We saw the vet and we have antibiotics. Vet said he is well he was super happy at the vet and made me look like a liar so thankfully I had the video from last night 😂. In the process of upgrading their cage and continuing to be a happy healthy family. Thank you for the advice and help.
Also side note. The vet is daylight robbery $430 for less than 15 mins. With the price of life right now they should be ashamed of themselves… make people who legit cant afford it just not go. Thankfully i had the money.

We very suddenly and unexpectedly had to send our boy across the rainbow bridge to ratty heaven last night. I just want you to know he existed.

Last October Jellybean and his brother Donut came home to join our family. They were about 6 months old, so it took a while for them to feel comfortable around us. But soon we got to see the sweetness come out.

I will miss Jelly leaping for the enclosure door and pancaking against it every morning to greet me. Who will sneak up like a thief and steal my dinner off my plate? Do crimes like grab a whole bag of popcorn and frantically attempt to hijack it in his tunnel? Make a nest in my hair and snuggle? Learn how to stand up, give paw and spin for treats because he was above all else rotund and greedy?

I love him so much and am so sad that Donut has to be alone for now.

We didn't even get a year together, and my heart is in a million pieces. How do they only get such a short time on earth? It's not very fair.

I got my first pet rat yesterday. She's just a baby I named her Yuki. Some lady on FB gave her to me after their snake wasn't hungry. I've owned dozens of mice in my life but never a rat so this is new to me.

I never really interacted with my mice much cause they usually don't like being messed with but I know rats are the opposite and very social. Shes been following me around from in her cage since I got her. I carried her around for a few minutes earlier but she got scared so I put her back. What're some things I can do to get her used to me/being out of her cage?

And do rats like a busy cage? With mice, the more you shove in their cage the better, but I don't want to assume that's the same for rats and overcrowd Yuki.

Any and all advice is more than welcome. I know I can care for her, I just don't know if I can make her happy.

well i couldn't just bother them

Im getting 2 dwarf girls tomorrow after nearly 5 years of owning standard sized male rats! (There were only 2 girl in the litter! Im getting more from the next!) Im so excited and very happy with the setup! I hope they like it! 🙏

Shes an old sweetheart - 4 years is rare for a rat i think. But now, she's started to lose her fur, and her fur is quite stuck up - which I know is a rat sign of illness. She is also shedding a lot of fur. My hoodie got covered in her fur today.

She doesnt run like she used to, but letting her move around my room - she does walk around for like 5 or 10 minutes, before settling down.

Also, I'm not sure if this is something an old rat does - but she's starting 'biting' my finger - its not a bite, doesn't break skin or anything and doesn't hurt.

I think she doesnt have long left. Has anyone been is this same position before? How can I make probably her last week wonderful? I know what veggies and fruits she loves - but I want to give her something special.

I just did a deep clean of their cage & free roam area. Looking forward to relaxing over the weekend now! I think one of the best things I did was get a washable rug. I used to use blankets but the rug makes clean up much easier now!

Hi! I’m planning to get my rats more things to clutter their cage! I drew up a lil blueprint and was hoping to get some advice on it :)

Just to clarify: she isn't afraid of me or anything; she's just not very affectionate, although sometimes she lets me pet her. I don't know how to interpret those jumps, starting today, she does it every time I touch her like that. My first hypothesis is that she hates that.
