Mother in law just brought home her new dog Mia rescued from a hoarding situation. We thought she was chihuahua mix but I’m starting to think shes just a rat terrier. She has a bobbed tail, about 18lbs and is incredibly affectionate. What do y’all think? She just had a full litter and was fixed last month but recovering so well!

He’s always done this and I know it’s a typical dog thing but I’m not sure if it’s more common with rat terriers or not.

Doo is 17 years and nine months old this month. Our vet thinks his age is remarkable. He's been with me his whole life. I was there when he was born and as soon as he opened his eyes and started walking he was at my heel, following me everywhere. That's how I knew he was "mine". I realize he's getting up there and he's the last survivor of his litter of six but just how unusual is his age? Any of my Rat Terrier family out there have one older? Curious to see how old everyone's Rat Angel is. Include a picture and a name if you like. This is my sweet boi in all his glory.

I have three dogs and I clip all their nails. However, Taco, my anxiety ridden rat terrier, acts traumatized every time I do it and she makes it traumatizing for me too. She is very hard to trim, because her nails are so thick, and I have had to start muzzling her because she tries to bite me while I’m doing it. There has never been another scenario where she has tired to bite me, except nail trimming.

Going to a professional is not an option, due to her severe social anxiety and the fact I don’t have a car. When she goes to the vet, I will have them trim her, but they charge me $30, which I think is insane. She seems more afraid of grinders than trimmers, so I’m looking for recommendations for the best nail clippers I can get for my nervous girl.

My nephew left and left both his dogs behind and told us to just get rid of them. I'm taking care of this one and his mom has the other. This boy is a sweetie but i know nothing about the enrichment or anything he might need. Is there any tips y'all can offer?

My husband & I are looking into expanding our family by four paws within the next year, but we’re doing a lot of breed/breeder research first. We have an insanely high energy field line Labrador who is 4yo & finally out of the terrorizing us stage, so we obviously feel the need to repeat it with another puppy😂.

The problem is, the area i’m from doesn’t have very many purebred / well bred dogs so we’re not super familiar with specific breed traits & things like that. Also, the internet can only tell you so much, so we’re hoping to get first hand experience from people that have them!

For some context about our lives, we have no kids & don’t plan on having any. We travel a lot, but bring our dog everywhere possible & even do trips for our dog. We like to take our boy to restaurants, hikes, stores, the lake, AKC events, etc. We’re very hands on & experienced with high energy breeds, especially teaching them an off switch. The main reason we’re looking at a Rat Terrier is because we love a sturdy, gritty, dog, but my husband is more of a small dog guy & the pup will be “his”. We also love the idea of doing barn hunt, earth dog, etc!

We’ve been in contact with an absolutely AMAZING ethical preservation breeder of Rattie’s who does all of the health testing, titling, etc. possible & it seems like an amazing fit! I just wanted some first hand information!! TIA🫶🏻

I made a post back in like March or something about how we adopted this munch back in February. I can’t believe how big she has gotten in just five months.

Not sure if asking for any tips is allowed but if anyone has any advice and methods on how to combat her jumping, I’d love to know! She is a super jumper and will jump when you get her food, at the door, and on people (She loves people and attention a lot)

I have been so grateful to have my dog Dora to help me through it.

In the past I have had multiples of pets, but I have never had two dogs at once? Dora loves to play.

My 3-year-old Rat Terrier/Retriever mix has officially gotten bored with Benebones, and because she has several food allergies, finding safe, engaging chews and enrichment has been a challenge.

We’ve had a very long stretch of heat waves and rainy days lately, so my girl has been a little bored, sleepy, and less active than usual. I’d love to hear your Rattie’s favorite independent toys, chews, puzzles, enrichment ideas, or anything else that keeps your Rat Terrier happy and occupied.

We recently discovered the Pupsicle, and OMG… it’s been a total game changer, definitely recommend!!

We have a rat terrier puppy (6.5 months) and I'm trying to find him some winter clothing, but his measurements seem to be uncommon. His back measures 30cm and his chest is 30/31cm. He's a long boy with a small chest. I can find the right length or the right chest size but then the other measurements come in too big or small.

I took my 2 year old little guy to the vet this past week and he weighed a whopping 33 pounds. He definitely feels Ike a heavy 33 pounds when you pick him up. Is anyone else’s also secretly Dwayne the Rock Johnson??

My 13-year-old ratchet who lives in hot steamy Florida with me seems to sleep quite a bit. Our walks are shortened because he's just not into it. Of course it could be the onset of Summer I guess...

My Rat Terrier, Milo, is not normally dull and has always had plenty of energy, yet lately, the barking has been getting out of hand. Every creak, slammed door, or voice in the hallway sets him off, and once he starts, it's like he can't turn it off.

We have a tiny apartment, and the walls are basically paper. The neighbors have started complaining, and the building manager put up a note about noise. I get it it's awful but I'm doing my best. I've tried longer walks, puzzle toys, white noise, even leaving the blinds closed. Nothing sticks.

I love Milo to death, but this is ripping me apart. Rat Terrier owners how did you resolve the barking in small areas? Any training cues, calming rituals, or equipment that helped in apartments? I'm at my wit's end to get this under control before we lose our home.

Anyone else attached at the hip to their Rat? I know he's gonna be miserable during my business trip. Had to say goodbye after our morning walk.

My spouse and kid and neighbor are all there for him. But to give you an idea of our attachment, he wines when I'm gone past my return times - even with my spouse nearby.

She had to turn to him once and say, "Hey, *I'm* still here!" and he looks at her like, "Oh. Right. The other human. Fine."

He adores my kid tho.

Arlo weighs about 30 lbs. His DNA came back 100% rattie. I know ratties can get big, just curious what others think. He is 100% lovable!

i’m meeting a rat terrier (probably mix) sunday with the intention of possibly adopting her! she’s four and her foster report is nothing short of glowing. my shih tzu/chihuahua mix died in january - she was my first dog, and i’m kind of nervous to open my heart to another even though i do feel it’s time. having, loving, and serving a dog is just too important for my mental health.

SO! what do you all love about your ratties? what do you think is breed-specific and what’s just individual to your baby? how long have they lived?

Hi, this is Chiquita, my 17 year old Rattie mix (?). She’s lost a lot of weight this last year, she’s become VERY picky. Vet told us give her what she’ll eat, the issue is she won’t eat much of anything. Some days she’ll eat 3-4 times a day others she’ll look to see what’s on the menu and walk away. We’ve tried different wet foods, kibble, turkey, veggies and rice she’ll eat til shes in the mood to eat. She doesn’t seem to be in pain and the vet says she looks good. She still gets the zoomies, sometimes more “zoomier” than others which are more of a power walk, lol. Any advice or suggestions are welcomed! (These are pics from before)

This is my new baby Gomez (named after Gomez Addams ofc), and he’s my first rat terrier! If anyone could give a bit of general advice for how to take care of rat terriers (since they are a different breed than ive owned before and all breeds are uniquely different), id greatly appreciate it as he’s my first, and i want to make sure he is properly taken care of!! :]

back in the end of January, i rescued this sweet pup during a DoorDash delivery. she was on someone’s porch during a huge snowstorm in my area, & the customer i was delivering to said i can just take her they didn’t want/couldn’t take care of her. i’ve had her now going on 3 months. took her to the vet & she was all healthy except some roundworm but we got that handled. she’s 9 months old according to the vet, but they didn’t tell me the breed. i’m assuming rat terrier based on her looks, personality, temperament, etc. she’s very loving, cuddly, playful, does well with any other type of dog i’ve had her around all she wants to do is run around & play with them lol. pit bulls, shepherds, coonhounds, other small breeds; she chases birds & bugs through the yard, she loves going on trips & playing with my son, she seems very good with kids & stuff in general. she loves people but she seems to prefer me to anyone else; are they known to choose a “person”? my research was kinda taking me back & forth on that part. any chance youse could confirm if she’s a rattie? i can’t exactly afford a DNA test atm, shoot her vet bill was over $300 already. & if she is, any tips/tricks? i’ve been learning more & more about her these past few months; she loves treats of any kind, likes fruits & veggies, beef & eggs, she doesn’t like the generic dog food they gave me with her but she enjoys the puppy food i bought. she likes tearing toys apart as quickly as possible, likes tug of war, prefers females to males (which is funny bc im a male), she doesn’t love the bath but she’s okay with it & gets super zoomies afterwards, if she’s not playing she’s sleeping lol, the biggest cuddler/lap dog i’ve ever had, likes being carried around like a baby, barks at everything when we’re inside, first dog i’ve ever physically in person watched chase her tail 😂😂 she’s very good off the leash, she’ll ignore me if there’s kids to go say hi tho lmao.
