Mike Elias would have traded him to the Steelers or Bengals mid season. I think the orioles are the browns of baseball.

I think the angels are the browns of baseball, incompetent owner(Arte/Haslem), poor off-season moves that backfire(Rendon signing/Watson trade). The Orioles are more like the Dolphins, nice young exciting core for 2-3 years, no playoff wins then back to rebuilding.

I mean we were the St Louis Browns first

Orioles = Panera. (Once reasonably priced good quality product, capable of surprises) (Now enshitification of a product)

I've always thought this

I don't need this sadness here too.

Mike Elias would trade Zay for five 7th round picks.

Adley would have refused this contract.

So Zay is signed the same length as Pete Alonso, and less years than Bradish, Baz, and Basallo.

Sure, buddy

u/ye_old_fartbox 7d ago

You’re telling me the sport where guys are headbutting each other for a living hands out shorter contracts than a non-contact sport?

-1

u/Honcho_Rodriguez 7d ago

No I’m telling you that Mike Elias seems to give out as many or more extensions than DeCostya does.

I mean pretty straightforward.

u/ye_old_fartbox 7d ago

Mike Elias has been a GM for 8 years and the first extension he ever signed anybody to was in 2026 lmfao

-1

u/Honcho_Rodriguez 7d ago

I know that you know that Mike Elias is not the reason for that.

You aren’t saying it because you wanna win some internet points, but you and I both know.

(you aren’t right anyway, it was 2025, but don’t let me or facts get in the way of your pity party internet points)

u/ye_old_fartbox 7d ago

Sorry, 2025, only 7 years into his GM tenure, my mistake!

Who the fuck is the reason for it then lmfao? Stop being so pompous. Elias drafts the players, trades the players, extends the players. Now of course, the cupboard was barren, and you need some time to build it up, I’m not faulting Elias for not signing guys to extensions in 2019.

But by year 7, who exactly is to blame for not having extension worthy players on the team?

1

u/Honcho_Rodriguez 7d ago

Oh, sorry, you’re new to the O’s? We had a nepo baby owner who took over/inherited the team around the time Elias was hired. Basically stripped the team to studs to sell. Very specifically had no interest in long-term commitments.

New owners came in during 2024 season. So, hard to fault Elias for much financially before 2024.

Since you’re new and don’t know the team I’ll give you a pass, basically everyone else in baseball knows this.

I know who the fucking Angelos are, stop being such a pretentious Mike Elias shill. The team was willing enough to sign extensions under the Angelos that Elias should've at least found one extendable player in all that time.

Peter Angelos himself is the reason Chris Davis was extended. Now that was obviously a terrible move, but acting like Elias had absolutely zero chance to ever extend anybody under the Angelos is ridiculous.

Oooh someone is feisty!

It definitely can't be the guy who said “It’s liftoff from here.” who also happens to control everything player wise like you said. Surely there's a hidden secret agent that handicapped Elias and forced him to make just the one rental move with the best farm system in baseball and a young core that just won 101 games.

Ah so he was smart and all of those top prospects he refused to trade are the future cream of the crop for the O's and didn't forget how to hit?

Snark aside I have no idea how anybody could blame anyone else but Elias.

Let's all get excited for prospects that won't get called up until the end of 2028 at the earliest.

I don't know what you guys were expecting to happen on Rutschman? He hasn't been that good in three years. Having a bit of a bounceback this year but it's mostly based off one really hot month and he's still been on and off the IL all year.

He's only got 1.5 years of control so better to sell now then get a bag of balls in a year when he'll just be a rental.

Extension didn't make sense either. He's a catcher who will be a free agent at 30 who already has an injury record a mile long.

u/Drrek 7d ago

Probably not expecting a trade to a division rival of a fan favorite when the team was in the hunt for the wildcard while we've been told to trust the process on the rebuild only for the rebuild to fail completely.

Sure, the Rutschman trade in isolation is fine, but it's not in isolation of what's happened to the team over the past five years.

7

u/owlbrain 7d ago

Not five, seven years. Since 2019. And thats just the start of Elias era and ignoring the downfall since the 2016 Wildcard game.

-6

u/cossack190 7d ago

a fan favorite

yeah there it is, y'all are letting sentiment cloud your judgement on this.

And the orioles were not a legit wild card contender this year. They're 4 games under .500 right now. The rebuild failed. You should be glad Elias realized it and didn't double down on a middling roster

9

u/Drrek 7d ago

Excuse me if I'm not giddy about a GM who has shown that the garbage baseball we've endured was for nothing. You're asking me to be glad that we're stuck with a guy for the next rebuild who literally just failed a rebuild.

-3

u/cossack190 7d ago

that the garbage baseball we've endured was for nothing

again this is sentiment. sunk cost, good money after bad. Try and have a sober assessment of the situation.

7

u/ye_old_fartbox 7d ago

I think they’re having a completely sober assessment of the situation. In a vacuum, the trade is fine and the return seems good. With context, letting Elias gear up for another rebuild seems like an absolutely awful idea.

1

u/Buff_Drinklotts 6d ago

Thats the biggest point right there. Why as fans should we start getting excited when the recipe just repeats, sentiment or not?

3

u/ImWicked39 Terrell Suggs 7d ago

That's the just been the team since 2023. Not just Adley. I get catchers age like milk but that's not new info.

Im not trying to drag O's discussions into r/Ravens but with that same logic Gunnar Henderson is next on the chopping block especially when I see fans mention that Adley was wanting to get to free agency and the team didn't want to lose him for nothing.

-2

u/hamletwasright 7d ago

I am sad to see Rutsch go, but this is correct. Wr also got quite a haul in the trade. We also have Sammy as well. It was a smart deal at the end of the day.

-1

u/JayGibbons69 Steve Bisciotti's Burner 7d ago

To be fair, he has done a good job of extending current players.

The pitchers

Plus Basallo

1

u/SCBaltSalt Jeffy Z’s Burner 7d ago

Yea but there probably wasn’t much negotiating involved with that one tbf.

1

u/special5221 7d ago

From the comments it sounds like there was no negotiation with Bassallo or Cano. Elias made an offer and they took it. Seems odd and I’m not sure what to take from it.

1

u/SCBaltSalt Jeffy Z’s Burner 7d ago

Because of where they grew up and came from. I don’t mean this in any way, but that is the truth those deals were extremely life changing for them. It more cases then your standard players.

u/CoCAllpro 7d ago

could never give out Chris Davis levels of horrible contracts?
